Lately, I get a screen called main window, that doesn't seem to do anything but show up and be open, maybe.  I close it by going to windows list with insert f10, arrowing to it, entering on it, and pressing alt f4.  Anyone else experiencing this?

Yes, there have been several discussions on MacVisionaries a googlegroups list on using VMWare Fusion on the Macintosh with JAWS and/or NVDA. Though obviously you will have better luck with JAWS / Windows applications on this list. The archives for MacVisionaries is publically visible, and I would expect you can get all the information you need without subscribing.
I personally have three Windows VM's on my Mac so I can easily switch between different versions while testing. VMWare does have the ability to mount parts of the Macintosh disk into the z:\ drive on Windows, so do not configure cloud storage on your Windows side as discussed earlier.

HI all,

We discussed a resources list last month, I've been working on a site for a client recently and have added this page to their site. It can be found at: https://rogercusson.com/resources/. I'm still updating the list, so as many URL's as I've been able to find as of now are loaded.
I've also removed the categories listing as I didn't find it necessary.
I will be reorganizing the list to have all apps "included with windows"
in the same section, most likely at the bottom of the list as they won't have URL's. I look forward to updating this list as more resources are approved by the group.

If I missed anything, or anyone wants to add to the other lists on the page, please do let me know, I'll gladly update!

Thanks,

Sarah

moderated Re: using Jaws on a mac

David Griffith

MacVisonaries  is an option but most Mac lists will not like you talking about Windows apart from the actual installation of the VM.

I have not used a Mac for over a year now but I would offer the suggestion that you use VMware Fusion as your  VM client.

This was accessible in setting up windows the last time I tried.

I thought Fusion was the perfect way of having the best of both worlds with a Mac running  windows at the same time. I have to say that I was wrong. There are hidden drawbacks.

If you are going to be a heavy Windows User then I would suggest that you  do not accept the default split of processor cores for the Virtual machine but increase  both processor and ram available to the machine to increase performance level.

If you lack an insert key you will probably need to use Sharp Keys in the VM to remap a key as your insert key.

Remember also that you will have to use one of your Jaws activations for the VM.

Also running cloud storage like iCloud and DropBox on a VM can be complicated as you end up hosting the same mirrored files physically twice on your Mac and your VM virtual drive .

If you use hardware peripherals such as scanners and/or Bluetooth devices do not expect life to be straightforward with the VM.

For what it is worth I used a VM for some years but eventually abandoned it. I decided Windows machines  were better for running Windows and left the Mac for running  the Mac  software for which it was best.

Unlike  Macs Windows laptops etc were so cheap that by the time you had bought Fusion and a legit copy of Windows etc. there was little to be gained.

Unlike running cloud on a VM cloud software like DropBox and iCloud work brilliantly if you are working across multiple physical machines of a Mac and a Windows machine. This made it comparatively easy to share files across both devices.

Just my views.

Hi all

I am wanting to try and set up a vm on a Apple Mac and have Windows and Jaws on it.

Does anyone have a link to a Mac user list so I can get information and help on how to do this.

Many thanks

Hi George,

I need the row number to be spoken by Jaws when arrowing slowly up the table column. If arrowing up at a normal speed then Jaws skips the row announcement and just reads the cell contents which is the desired result.

Currently, using the Jaws 2020 version released in the past week, Jaws does not announce any row number regardless of the arrowing speed. The row announcement was  spoken under the final 2019 version as well as the 2020 version released in late October.  I made the settings in the just released version the same as the settings in the 2019 version but this had no effect. That is, after making sure the settings relating to “default application” and saved with shift control d.

After trying numerous settings, I have come to the conclusion that a bug has crept into the latest 2020 Jaws update.

I’ll contact F S and make a report early in the new year.

Cheers

Tom

However, if I change to the final copy of Jaws 19 then the row number is spoken as normal.  It appears to me that something has been broken in the latest 2020 version.

Thanks,

Sarah

Hi,

You can change where the document is saved under Wordc Options.

In Word:

Hit ALT  & F

Hit “T” on keyboard

Arrow down to “Save”

Make your changes.

I can choose to save to One Drive and later I can choose to save to “This Computer”

Both of these are check boxes.

I can also choose to save a any location through the Browse button.

Hope this helps.

Also, you can turn on and off the “Auto Save” functions in this area.

Hi,

I am not, at the moment, sure of where the setting is that can fix this.  It occurs because of One Drive and Office 365.  My workaround is I hit F12 and save as another document with a different file name.  Also, I do not use AutoSave function.

You might want to check the saving options you have by hitting alt+f, then t, and arrow down to saving and tab through there.

I’m not sure what would cause your issue, I always get prompted to save my changes.

I am using Jaws 18 with Windows 10 and Office 365.

Until relatively recently, when closing a document in MS Word with alt f4 or control f4, if I’d made changes, I would be asked if I wanted to save the changes before closing. But now it just closes and saves.

Today this was a real nuisance as I’d slightly customised my Christmas letter for an individual, but I hadn’t intended this to change the original letter which still needs to go out to some people. When I closed it though, it didn’t ask if I wanted to save the changes – it just did so!

How in future can I prevent this from happening?

Three Reasons to Use Google’s Webmail Option with JAWS
by
Elizabeth Whitaker

Gmail is a widely-used email service that is used at home,
work, and school. While it can be accessed through a desktop email application
such as Microsoft Outlook, its webmail option provides more versatility.

Google’s webmail option provides Gmail users a flexible
alternative for accessing email from computers and mobile devices. A web
browser and Internet connection are all you need to begin sending and receiving
messages.

When you access Gmail through this form of internet-based
email, messages are stored on a web server, rather than on your computer or
device. This frees up disk space and memory for other important files. Here are
three reasons to consider choosing Google’s webmail option when accessing Gmail
with JAWS.

Access Your Email from Anywhere

When using Google’s webmail option, you can access messages
from anywhere on any computer or mobile device. This is especially convenient
if you travel frequently or need to access email between appointments. Because
your email is all on the cloud, you can also search for and respond to messages
quickly and efficiently without accessing a dedicated computer or software.

No Additional Software Is Required

Webmail doesn’t require the installation of dedicated
software. Simply open your web browser, go to Gmail, and your messages will be
displayed.

Access Your Email Using Familiar JAWS and Web Page Navigation Commands

Since Google’s webmail is displayed in your web browser, you
can use JAWS Quick Nav keys and other navigation keystrokes when working with
messages. These familiar commands make learning easier.

Want to get the most out of accessing Gmail? Check out our
instructional tutorial,
Gmail and JAWS

your changed settings are not working because you are not saving into default directory. to do that you should press control+shift+d after making changes into jaws setting center.

Thanks for your reply and instructions George.

I have tried all of the steps on numerous occasions but still cannot get Jaws to read the row position in a table while using the latest version released only a few days ago.

However, if I change to the final copy of Jaws 19 then the row number is spoken as normal.  It appears to me that something has been broken in the latest 2020 version.

In a web page

Go to system settings with jaws key plus 6 on the number row

Tabe once and you hear users

Arrow once and you hear Web / HTML / PDFs

Arrow right once and you hear the same as above with open on the end

Arrow down to you hear tables and right arrow

Arrow down to you hear \\Tables\Web / HTML / PDFs \Table Presentation Information and then then press space bar and it changes to for all tables

Now quit the system settings and it will ask you if you wish to save the changes and choose yes and that should do it

Hi,

Prior to installing the latest Jaws 64 bit update a few days ago, Jaws would read the row position in a web based table as  I arrowed    up the column but since the update, Jaws no longer gives this information.

Can someone inform me which settings need to be changed so once more Jaws can give this info?

Thanks

Tom

Can you elaborate? You can install Jaws on a new system where no previous user files exist and all works as it should. What exactly do you mean by “lose MS Office ribbon functionality”?

Further to the below, also retain “user settings.”  Else, you will lose MS Office ribbon functionality; which I learned the hard way.

I would use the Windows control panel, programs and features, and uninstall from there, but you probably should leave shared components.

Hi Edward,

You are correct, I hadn't checked this in some time. But I am also 99.9% certain that this was not always the case and it is quite possible that Microsoft's competitive Office 365 option may have caused Dropbox to increase their plan from 1 to 2 Tb and of course storage continues to decrease in cost as well. Anyways, thanks for pointing this out, if somebody did need more than 1 Tb then Dropbox Plus or Dropbox Professional which apparently offers 3 Tb would be a good option.

Hi Sieghard,

You get 2TB on Dropbox's first tier payment plan not 1 as with OneDrive and Office 365.

You do and it is of course not free. I believe it is something like $100 a year.
You can get Office 365 for less than that for personal use and in addition to giving you a license for the full Office suite the subscription also includes 1 Tb of OneDrive storage which is what you get with Dropbox if you pay.
OneDrive works much like Dropbox and since I have the Office 365 subscription I certainly don't see any need to pay Dropbox as well. I still have my free account with I think 11 or 12Gb of storage, but only use it from time to time.

Sieghard
