sharing phonemic dictionary for eloquence
Leo
Hello my fellow jaws users: As some of you may remember, I’ve been asking for weeks how to improve the pronunciation of jaws. Particularly, I wanted to do it for eloquence because it’s the synth the I mostly use on a daily basis, and taking into account that I’m not a native English speaker, it was totally inconvenient for me to continue to listen mispronounced words.
Now I bring you a dictionary for eloquence that solves many pronunciation issues when using American English voices. It is not remotely similar to the user’s dictionary, which I think it’s OK for some instances, but for most cases inadequate. The master mind behind this phonemic dictionary is Amir Soleimani, who started building this dictionary many years ago for other software. This phonemic dictionary contains more than twenty-two thousand entries, and Amir regularly introduces changes and New words. Here are some words in which you can easily perceive a significant difference before and after adding the dictionary, so pay close attention now, and when you have finished the process, returned up to this point and listen again! hermaphroditus
cyberphobia
semitone
kurzweil
insincere
and one of my favorites,
voila!
Let’s cut to the chase! A couple of notes before the steps: If you are using the eloquence synth, switch to another synth. The dictionary file is attached to this E-mail, all you have to do is to download the compressed file and unzip it.
1. Assuming you have a 64 bit machine, go to the following folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Freedom Scientific\Shared\Eloquence\6.1.Copy the file called “ELOQMAIN.DCT,” and paste it in a safe location, in other words, back it up. 2. Copy the file that was left after unzipping, which has the same name of the file that you just put in a safe location, and paste it in the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Freedom Scientific\Shared\Eloquence\6.1. If windows asks for confirmation, go ahead and replace the existing file. You’re all set! Relaunch jaws, switch to eloquence, and try out the pronunciation of the words above. In a 32 bit machine, the process should be similar except for the name of the folder program files, but I don’t own a 32 bit machine.
Notice that all we did was to replace the existing file; however, the new file already contains all the entries. Notice that this is not the jaws user’s dictionary (.JDF file) so, it shouldn’t conflict with it, but in any case, that’s why you must make a backup of that file.

Jaws And Outlook Auto Fill Sounds
Geoff Connor
Hi all. I am using the latest version of Jaws 2020 and Outlook 2016 Home and Business on 2 windows 10 computers. When I go to send a message, the sounds that are supposed to play when the auto fill opens and closes are not sounding. My Microsoft sounds are turned on, and the other day, I talked to both Microsoft disability and Freedom Scientific. I had no luck. This feature has never worked for me. If anyone has any suggestion, it would be very much appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi Dave,
Yes, you are right. However, microsoft are starting to phase out internet explorer. In windows 10, it is something that can be installed from programs and features, rather than being the default, as was the case in previous versions of windows. In fact, lately, I have found that ie does not work as well with a lot of new web sites out there. I just thought that I would throw it out there as a matter of information to yourselves, and to highlight the fact, that if someone gets stuck, google chrome and edge chrome wont allow it. There are a great many people developing web sites, including myself, that run them locally to test them. At that stage, it is unlikely, that they would have a proper certificate installed. pat

Hi,
i thought i would just throw this out there in case it helps someone. i have just downloaded and installed the brave browser for the internet. it is a verry slimmed down version of chrome or edge. the one thing i liked about it, is that it allows you to proceed to web sites that are not recommended. for example: i have a nas storage device on my network, but it is that old, that the certificate is no longer valid. even importing this certificate into my trusted route certifications store on my machine does not fix the problem. both google chrome and chrome edge, just tell you that the site is bad, and thats all. brave on the other hand, tells you that the site is bad, but gives you the option to proceed if you want. obviously, given the fact that i know what this is, i want to proceed to it. google chrome used to have a "proceed" button on it, as you will find if you search the net, but it has been removed in the latest version. i also think, that brave is a lot nearer in interface to google chrome than it is to chrome edge. yes, i have the latest version of both chrome browsers installed. has anyone found a way to get to web sites that are invalid in either chrome edge or google chrome? i would be interested to know how you did this, but for the moment, brave allows it. pat

Weird braille display issue
Hi folks,
I am experiencing a weird and frustrating issue when writing emails using Thunderbird and the latest Jaws2020. My braille display is an Orbit Reader 20 Plus, and in all other editing writing situations, it works beautifully, even on Google Docs which can act weird for me sometimes. But each time I try and write an email message using it with Thunderbird, the lines get reversed. I press the Dot 8 key to produce a new line, which is produced, but when I start to type on the display, the typed characters appear at the very top of the message. This does not happen with the same display and NVDA or Narrator and Thunderbird. Is there some obscure Jaws braille setting I can play with to fix this problem? And, if it's a bug, to whom should I report it, Orbit research or Freedom Scientific (I know they've changed there name LOL). Thanks for any suggestions. This is the only problem I am having with the orbit reader so far as a remote braille display. ~Ann

Hi Kevin,
Sorry that you are having some problems installing Image for Windows. Since I do not know an answer, I suggest two options.
First, I would consider trying IFW tech support again. I think you received a wrong answer the last time that you tried tech support but you might get lucky with a different person.
Second, there still may be members on this list who can offer a possible solution to assist you in installing Image for Windows.
Hope you have the best of luck,

I did do the 30 day trial. Ran into some problems.
Here is what happen. Now I can no longer try out the trial.
I installed it and realized I need to install the traditional option. Support at TeraByte told me I could uninstall and reinstall. I did that and when I started the software it asked me to purchase, cancel. I used the Jaws cursor and found continued was unavailable. I told support that and was told to click on continue. I knew that wouldn’t work. I tried it any and it didn’t work. Told support and they have not gotten back to me. There has only been 1 day since the download. Not 30 days. Now what?

With Image for Windows Version 3… some of the check boxes in settings are checked by default and some are not. Routing the Jaws cursor to the PC will cause Jaws to anounce the status of check boxes. Note, in some places in the menus, you get a plus sign to let you know that something got added instead of a check box.
With the exceptions below, I recommend that you use the default settings if you are just trying to back up your Primary/C drive.
I always check the accessible check box. I also check the completion alarm so I know when the job is finished. There will be a few other check boxes and settings that are easy to understand and checking them is optional. But, I wouldn’t change any setting unless I was certain that I know exactly what I am doing.
I also check both the verification and the byte per byte verification. IFW will remember these settings if you answer yes to the prompt that ask if you want to save the settings.
IFW is an extremely complicated and powerful software suite and I never make additional changes and it has always worked for me. My backups are verified. And, around 6 times now, I have restored backups.
Once, I restored a backup that was created back when I was using Jaws Version 12 just to see if it would work. It did. It was strange to look at files and emails and an OS. that were over 5 years old.
Stay safe,
James B

By default, all the check boxes are unchecked. Once you have highlighted an item and tapped the SPACE BAR, to check it, route the JAWS cursor to the PC cursor, then, use the Read Current Line command and JAWS will announce whether the item is checked or not.

IFW is a Terabyte Unlimited product. A thirty-day free trial is offered. What about it did you not like, or would you change about it?
Narrator gets included when a certain initialization (.INI)file is edited before the recovery disk is created. It can be started manually I think, but this particular option will start it when the recovery disk is booted.
