Ketan Kothari <muktaketan@...>

Friends,

I use Internet 7 with JAWS 12 and AIM 7.5. I have a strange problem:

When I installed AIM I could access everything such buddy lists in FB, Google talk etc but when I restarted I just cannot access AIM it is totally blank and no menu etc. are spoken. I am shocked. Could anyone help?

Wow, thought I found that posted on Twitter, but the way Qwitter reads it made it seem like garbage. I wonder how people discovered this one? I'm sure it only works with eloquence, but cool!

windows 7 64 bit, wlmessinger 15 and jaws 12 and 13

John

I have found jaws 13 to be much better with wlm 15 than 12 but there are a
lot of issues when trying to add a contact, seeing whether you have invited
and accepting invitations etc. I have never been able to delete a contact
using the delete contact option from the menu bar, same wiht the edit
contact in this same menu, you will see if you try. Must admit getting
confused with j12 and 13 now.

For me in jaws 12 everything is spoken twice when I receive or send a
message but all works fine in 13.

So for me it is the problem of adding and accepting contacts, no information

at all on screen, the new ocr function helps a very little in some of these
areas.

Peter,

Grievance? Caused several other unnecessary messages? I'm just a poor sap
who believes that a question asked deserves a coherent and relevant answer,
that's all. No grievance. Clarity is essential if communication is to be

Sure, I'll drop it now, since you raised the question. And I'm a subscriber

Dave, the point about Iphones was not directly relevant to John's question,
but it was relevant to many list members as many of his followers have come
about due to his development of hte scripts for Itunes, many of whom have
Apple devices. I'm sure John won't just be scripting to help those people
with apple devices but for those people who may wish to switch email clients
on the basis John does his scripts for it they may find it useful to know.

It was one message to the list about something you might have thought was
not relevent and now you have caused several other unnecessary messages to
the list so why don't we just leave it there since I'm assuming that's what
your grievance was?

Exactly what the message said. You can't move over your contacts on to the
Iphone from WLM. That will matter to a lot of people since a large number of
visually impaired people now have Iphones so it is relevent.

There's a good idea John. WLM is used by many but has it's very silly querks
and it would be great if we could get an email client working perfectly well
with JAWS. I reckon it would only take you a day or so to fix everything as
much of it is stupid stuff like graphics not been labelled so the user has
to do it themselves so it will then identify unread messages, collapsed
conversations etc and the calendar function isn't ideal. Could be a quick
bit of work and create many happy JAWS users. That said I know I and many
others have repeatedly reported these issues to FS including during the JAWS
13 beta so hopefully they'll get off their backsides and fix them.

Hello,
Does anyone know if there are scripts for the new WLM?
I'm running Windows Vista and Jaws 11 and I just installed WLM. It seems as
if it is utilizing ribbons instead of a menu bar, so I'm stuck with a
not-so-good way of changing my settings. Also the spell check is horrible
because it just tells the word that it wants to change to, not the
misspelled word.
I don't think this problem was on the old Windows Live Mail but I don't know
how to get an earlier version of WLM.

I think all of us agree that John should get some recompense for his work

Perhaps having a paypal link on his site would be a good idea for voluntary

At the risk of starting a conflagration of controversy, I would like to
support the notion that John should get some remuneration for his hard work
-- even if he charged for scripts.
I know I would pay significantly for a set of scripts that made Google Docs
accessable, though I think that is not feasible.
The biggest single area of inaccessibility I encounter on my job is with
respect to on-line collaboration. I have clients who regularly send
invitations to go-to-meeting sessions where a document will be on the
screen, albeit from the client's computer. We will be on the phone
together, and sometimes the client will make edits he wants me to review,
and sometimes he will say simply, "Here, I'll give you control. Why don't
you revise this section on indemnification?"
I accomplish this only with the assistance of my sighted secretary. Without
her presence, I would be sunk.
Serotek has something called Accessable Event, but that really doesn't cut
it.
Again, this may be an application of limited applicability, but I run into
it all the time, and document collaboration is becoming more and more
popular. I hear ads for Go-To-Meeting almost every time I tune into XM
Radio, and note the popularity of Google Docs, not just because it is cheap,
but also because it offers collaboration.
This may simply be impossible and not everyone needs it, but if you need it,
you need it bad.

Ok, so with most of the Office applications scripted for, not to
mention iTunes, and the various parts of Windows, what else would the
masses of unemployed blind folks with limitted incomes like access to?
With the basics that most people want to use daily covered, we're probably
going to move into more specialized applications that not as many people
require. If said application is something that some of us who work or are
trying to find work need access to, maybe we should donate a little cash to
John for his hard work and probably hundreds of hours spent scripting. Just
a thought. Of course, any donations would be voluntary.

Re: Checkmark / Square Root symbol

Soronel Haetir

No, all this does is make the symbol get read correctly. You still
have to use the ALT+ keyboard trick (or some other method, such as
char map, though that is really painful for blind folks) to type them.
But when dealing with symbolic math it is way better to hear sigma or
checkmark rather than s or v, which is the jaws default for those
particular characters.

I did a search through the profile files and it looks like
VKeyboard.jsm might be what you are after, I think you should at least
take a look at it.

On 10/25/11, Marquette, Ed <Ed.Marquette@kutakrock.com> wrote:

Subject: Re: Checkmark / Square Root symbol

You can add symbols by editing the *.sbl files in your jaws profile
directory (either your personal user profile or the all users
pdirectory)

For example, I have added the following to my c:\Users\All
Users\Freedom Scientific\Jaws\13.0\Settings\enu\eloq.sbl:

Symbol138=U+3A3=Cap Sigma
symbol139=u+03c3 11111111 small sigma
Symbol140=U+00FB 11111111 Checkmark

to the American English section.

And now jaws speaks those particular characters. Note that after
editing the .spl file you have to restart jaws, it does not pick up
the changes automatically. Also, in order to edit the shared profile,
you either need to change the security permissions on the files or run
your editor as administrator.

I learned of this after asking FS basically the same question.

This is how I did it:

1. Open notepad.
2. Press ALT+251, this will insert the Square Root symbol.
3. Note that Jaws will read the Square Root symbol as letter "V".
4. Select and copy the symbol without any spaces.
5. Open the Jaws default dictionary manager from the Jaws utilities

6. Select the Add button to add new entry in the Dictionary.
6. Paste the symbol in the "Actual word" edit box.
7. Type "Square Root" in the "Replacement word" edit box.

Re: JAWS Scripting for a new application

Peter Holdstock <ptrholdstock@...>

Dave, the point about Iphones was not directly relevant to John's question, but it was relevant to many list members as many of his followers have come about due to his development of hte scripts for Itunes, many of whom have Apple devices. I'm sure John won't just be scripting to help those people with apple devices but for those people who may wish to switch email clients on the basis John does his scripts for it they may find it useful to know.

It was one message to the list about something you might have thought was not relevent and now you have caused several other unnecessary messages to the list so why don't we just leave it there since I'm assuming that's what your grievance was?

Again why is that relevant to John's question about moving WLM Contacts to
Outlook Express? Outlook Express does not run on an iPhone, and this is not

I don't think this problem was on the old Windows Live Mail but I don't know

Re: [Bulk] Windows Live Messenger list of issues

windows 7 64 bit, wlmessinger 15 and jaws 12 and 13

John

I have found jaws 13 to be much better with wlm 15 than 12 but there are a lot of issues when trying to add a contact, seeing whether you have invited and accepting invitations etc. I have never been able to delete a contact using the delete contact option from the menu bar, same wiht the edit contact in this same menu, you will see if you try. Must admit getting confused with j12 and 13 now.

For me in jaws 12 everything is spoken twice when I receive or send a message but all works fine in 13.

So for me it is the problem of adding and accepting contacts, no information at all on screen, the new ocr function helps a very little in some of these areas.

around the Net for an ANSI codes list, but I couldn't find an accessible
one
quickly. It might be worth a try.

3. I may be reading this wrong, but an ASCII table I just looked at
indicates that the ASCII code for square root isn't 251, but 252.

Let us know if you find an answer.

Hi Dave;

The ascii code for the checkmark / square root symbol is supposed to be,
Alt

+ 251, but when this ascii symbol is typed inserted, Jaws reads the
+ letter,
V. I am assuming this is because, possibly anyways, that the checkmark /
square root symbol resembles the letter, V. What do you think? Also, I
as
of yet, have found no way to add extra symbols to the symbols list, i.e.,
Insert + 4 on the number row. Thank you very much for your reply. Take
care.

Mike,

You know about the Insert+4 symbols list, I'm sure. However it does not
have
these in the list. I'd sure like to find out how to add symbols to this
list.

Other than that, you'll need to find out the ASCII character code or
graphical code equivalent to these and use the numpad to enter them.
Hold
down Alt and type the numbers from the numpad to insert special
characters.

Subject: Checkmark / Square Root symbol

Hi All;

How do I type a checkmark / square root symbol using Jaws? Actually, I
am
not sure if this is a Jaws question or just a keyboarding question.
Moderators, please don't climb too far up my tree if this question isn't
Jaws related! All help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks much, take
care.

Re: Windows Live Messenger list of issues

I know that when the main windows live messenger window is open and you're in a conversation with someone, pressing the backspace only elicits jaws saying "space" instead of the actual character you're erasing. The alt 1, 2, 3 commands don't work right either. It's almost as if the wlm main window where the contact list is, etc, blocks the smaller window, even when the latter is maximized and the former minimized.

Before I take up this issue because I'm sure JAWS 13 will likely fix some of
the issues but I am not so sure about prior JAWS versions. I will script WLM
but it would be helpful to have a list of issues before I tackle it. So
please post all issues so I can get started.
Thanks,
John

Braille display issue during terminal emulation session

Kimber Gardner

Hi All,

I have an 80 cell focus braille display. Using it with jaws 13.

Since installing 13 yesterday I am seeing a strange shifting of the
braille on my display during terminal emulation sessions. The terminal
client is passport though I'm not sure that matters. I have the status
cells appearing on the lefthand side of the display which is fine. But
there are approximately twenty blank cells before the text/braille
appears on the display which renders a quarter of the display useless.

I know I've seen this problem before but can't recall how I fixed it.
I would like to shift the braille over toward the left so more of the
display will be used.

Thanks,
Kim
