Hello, all. I'm new to Firefox and was inquiring whether or not there are
any settings needed to optimize fire fox with jaws? Thanks and have a great

Can some one check with FS and tell us here how the price would be if
pearchising a dongle instead of an ILM license?
I have a dongle because this is the only option with the Hebrew version of
JFW in Israel but I'm not limited to activations and the dongle could be
used with any JAWS version/language.
I can transfer the dongle freely from one computer to the other without
anything.

Thank you,

Why does anyone need more than one or two computers for personal use? The
people who run into problems with their activation counts seem to own a
zillion computers. This is absurd. Any blind computer user who owns more

than two computers deserves to be scrutinized by FS.

Steve, a small objection from one who has requested new activations only
twice in nearly two decades. Agreed, requesting a lot of activations could
indicate usage outside the terms of our agreement with FS. However, it's
clear that many people here need activations for reasons to do with the
number of systems they have, the hardware upgrades they install, the
occasional mistakes they make, and so on. FS has a right to protect its
revenue source, but it does come at a cost to customers of the
unrestricted
use of a program we paid generously for.

Hi, all.

I'm between computers here, and have a question about Jaws activation
counts.

I know I could call FS about this, but figured I might get a quicker
answer from the list.

Regarding activations, does a single-license Jaws user like myself
have a given number of activations for each separate version of Jaws,
or is the allotted number of 3 activations constant across all
versions of Jaws collectively?

I am getting a couple of new computers set up for both office and
home, and

am trying to figure out how best to proceed, while still keeping an
older Windows XP machine around as a back-up in case that is needed as
well.

I have Jaws 12, but a few earlier versions of Jaws that I could
probably use if neded, if that would give me more activations to work
with.

Thanks!

Tom from Michigan

Hello there;

Just remember, if your going to create a jaws 12 shortcut on the windows 7
desktop, you may hear a ding sound, indicating the UAC the User account
control wants you to verify that it's alright to make change.
So, when you bring up alt+enter on desktop for jaws,
And tab to shortcut key none, just type the letter "j", and press enter.

transfer it?
Well, hit alt+enter on the Jaws 11 icon on your desktop, tab until
you're in the shortcut key hotkey field and delete it. Then bring
up the same properties for the Jaws 12 icon with alt+enter and
input the hotkey you want to use to launch it, ctrl+alt+enter for
example.

Personally, I have a hotkey for either so I can load 11 for some
tasks and 12 for others.

How to simulate arrow keys on a Braille display keyboard?

Maria Kristic

Hi, All.

I feel a bit silly for asking this, but I currently do not have a Braille
display with a Braille keyboard so cannot test myself, and I am still
uncertain of the answer to this question even after reading all of my screen
reader's commands for one such display. I am looking in to my options for
one of these displays in terms of which one I will purchase, and so that I
am on the same page with whomever might be reading this, the products to
which I just alluded are JAWS 12 running on a 64-bit edition of Windows 7
and a Focus 40 Blue Braille display. Anyway, I am wondering how one would
simulate the arrow keys, both by themselves and in conjunction with modifier
keys, when controlling one's computer via the display? For instance, let's
say that I am navigating a tree view. On my computer's QWERTY keyboard, I
use the UP/DOWN ARROWS to move between items within the same level (and I
presume that the Whiz Wheels set to List Mode or the rocker bars of the
Focus can be used for this purpose?), and the LEFT/RIGHT ARROWS to
expand/collapse levels (and this is where I am uncertain?). I am aware that
ENTER and BACKSPACE (i.e., Dot 8 and DOT 7, respectively, on the Focus) can
be used to move between levels as well, and I presume that this would work,
but BACKSPACE does not collapse any level; if I wished to explicitly
collapse a level in order to have less items to move through with UP/DOWN
ARROWS or first-letter navigation, I would press the LEFT ARROW twice on a
QWERTY keyboard, but again, this is where I am uncertain as to how it would
be done when controlling one's PC solely from the Braille display? As
another example, suppose that I wish to utilize the
ALT+CTRL+LEFT/RIGHT/UP/DOWN ARROW commands when navigating a table. I assume
that I would begin by pressing DOTS 3-6-8 CHORD to simulate the CTRL+ALT
modifier keys, but then what? Again, how do I simulate the arrow keys? The
only thing I can think of is to use DOT 3 CHORD (i.e., the Previous
Character command) to represent a LEFT ARROW, as this command would be
replicated as such on a PC (i.e., LEFT ARROW moves one back a character on a
QWERTY keyboard), and, in a similar vein, DOT 6 CHORD for RIGHT ARROW, DOT 1
CHORD (Previous Line command) for UP ARROW, and DOT 4 CHORD as the DOWN
ARROW. Am I correct in my thoughts, or are the arrow keys simulated in
different ways when performing commands such as the above?

Thanks much in advance for any assistance; it is much appreciated. I'm sure
that something incredibly rudimentary is escaping me here and thus
preventing me from figuring this out, *sheepish grin*. I look forward to
hopefully being straightened out!

Best,

Maria

Hello there;

You can turn this feature off, however I don't personally recommend this.
It's like having an extra layer of security.

Regarding the jaws shortcuts, you can have as many shortcuts as you wish,
pending on how many versions of jaws you have installed on computer.
I usually,

Use the alt+ctrl+j for the default version,

And, use, alt+ctrl+ 1 2 3 4 so on and so forth.

It amazes me sometimes that creating a shortcut seems to be such a challenge, but I guess it's just the nature of the beast sometimes.

Thanks for all the help and encouragement.

Tom,

I think you participated in a long-ago debate over how to get the JAWS
shortcut, as well as others, to stick. I believe my last shortcut trauma
involved Notepad. As you suggest here, I had to delete any alt-control-n
shortcuts in both the desktop and the programs menu for my intended
alt-control-n shortcut to take effect for Notepad, which now works
flawlessly.

Another note from my last experience of setting a JAWS shortcut. Following
FS's specific instructions, I stopped tabbing from the shortcut choice edit
field to the apply button. Instead, all I do now is tab to that edit field,
type (for example) j, and then press enter. To make sure, I then reboot. So
long as alt-control-j hasn't been assigned elsewhere, the shortcut takes
every time.

Some listers report needing to tab to apply and then to okay. For whatever
reason, we all appear to have different shortcut experiences.

Hi, again.

I just thought of one more question here.

What is the best way to transfer the Alt Control J shortcut to Jaws 12
from
Jaws 11, when doing the upgrade process?

I seem to recall having a problem with this once before in earlier
upgrades,
and can't remember how to resolve it.

All I remember is that I had great difficulty transferring the shortcut
over
to the new version of Jaws from the earlier version.

I would have thought that the "merge utilities" function would have taken
care of this, but it didn't in my earlier upgrade efforts.

Thanks for putting up with all my questions lately.

Hello again, everyone.

I successfully convinced the folks at FS to re-set my activation count back to 3, so it looks like I am now all set in that regard.

However, I have one more question about the activation process:

If I upgrade from Jaws 11 to Jaws 12 on a computer that already has Jaws 11, does the upgrade count against my number of available activations? In other words, each time I upgrade from Jaws 11 to 12, do I loose an activation?

Thanks!

Hi Tom,

I have 4 versions of Jaws installed on my computers. What I do is, use the
alt, control, + J, shortcut keystroke for the version i have loading at
startup, which is my preferred version, which is Jaws10 n my case. I then
assign different shortcut keystrokes to the other 3 versions. For example;

Jaws10 shortcut keystroke version that loads upon startup, alt, control, +
J.

Jaws6 shortcut keystroke, alt, control, + 6, on the number row above the
main keuyboard.

Jaws11 shortcut keystroke, alt, control, + 1, on the number row above the
main keyboard.

Jaws12 shortcut keystroke, alt, control, + 2, on the number row above the
main keyboard.

Hope this helps. Take care.

Tom,

I've always found it advantageous to re-create this shortcut for any new
version. Like many JAWS users, I have a few versions on my system because
later ones broke what previously worked. Each time I install a new version
(i.e., 10, 11, 12), I assign the j shortcut to it and reassign other
shortcuts to older versions.

Hi, again.

I just thought of one more question here.

What is the best way to transfer the Alt Control J shortcut to Jaws 12 from
Jaws 11, when doing the upgrade process?

I seem to recall having a problem with this once before in earlier upgrades,
and can't remember how to resolve it.

All I remember is that I had great difficulty transferring the shortcut over
to the new version of Jaws from the earlier version.

I would have thought that the "merge utilities" function would have taken
care of this, but it didn't in my earlier upgrade efforts.

Thanks for putting up with all my questions lately.

a new version of JAWS will automatically clean up any other icons with
Ctrl+Alt+J, but it's good to check, nonetheless.

Hi Tom,

I have 4 versions of Jaws installed on my computers. What I do is, use the
alt, control, + J, shortcut keystroke for the version i have loading at
startup, which is my preferred version, which is Jaws10 n my case. I then
assign different shortcut keystrokes to the other 3 versions. For example;

Jaws10 shortcut keystroke version that loads upon startup, alt, control, +
J.

Jaws6 shortcut keystroke, alt, control, + 6, on the number row above the
main keuyboard.

Jaws11 shortcut keystroke, alt, control, + 1, on the number row above the
main keyboard.

Jaws12 shortcut keystroke, alt, control, + 2, on the number row above the
main keyboard.

Hope this helps. Take care.
Mike

transfer it?
Well, hit alt+enter on the Jaws 11 icon on your desktop, tab until you're in the shortcut key hotkey field and delete it. Then bring up the same properties for the Jaws 12 icon with alt+enter and input the hotkey you want to use to launch it, ctrl+alt+enter for example.
Personally, I have a hotkey for either so I can load 11 for some tasks and 12 for others.

All I remember is that I had great difficulty transferring the shortcut over to the new version of Jaws from the earlier version.

I would have thought that the "merge utilities" function would have taken care of this, but it didn't in my earlier upgrade efforts.

Mike,

Not quite.

Checking the "Start JAWS automatically" just ensure that JAWS will start
up
on boot of the computer.

When installing a new version (say from 11 to 12) a shortcut will be added
to the desktop with the version number (e.g. JAWS 12) and it may or may
not
have the Ctrl+alt+J keystroke assigned.

If you have more than one major version of JAWS (9, 10, 11, 12) you could
end up with a desktop shortcut for each, and usually the first one with
the
hotkey.

Users like Tom need to edit the shortcut preferences for the old version
and
the new to ensure that only one has the hotkey assigned.

Hi Tom,

There is no need to transfer the alt, control, + J, keystroke. That is
the
default shortcut keystroke for all versions of Jaws. What you need to do
is
go to the Jaws12 context menu / options / basics and check the box to have
Jaws12 start automatically. By checking this box in any version of Jaws,
tells Jaws to use this particular keystroke as the shortcut keystroke.
Hope
this helps. Take care.

I just thought of one more question here.

What is the best way to transfer the Alt Control J shortcut to Jaws 12

Hello again, everyone.

I successfully convinced the folks at FS to re-set my activation count back
to 3, so it looks like I am now all set in that regard.

However, I have one more question about the activation process:

If I upgrade from Jaws 11 to Jaws 12 on a computer that already has Jaws 11,
does the upgrade count against my number of available activations? In other
words, each time I upgrade from Jaws 11 to 12, do I loose an activation?
