Thanks. I do find the contracted braille option there but that seems to be for just the display itself, not the keyboard input style. The display is showing contracted content. I noticed it was set to use a Pacmate display as the default and corrected it to a FOCUS display, but it didn't make any obvious changes to what is happening. Obviously the Pacmate display (when removed and used as a standalone) is just that-- a display. The FOCUS 40 BT is a Braille Keyboard and a Display.

Then again, the menu option only says "FOCUS", and I think all except the Bluetooth FOCUS display have no braille keyboard. Maybe the proper driver is simply missing? Hopefully I can get to them at FS on the phone soon. I think either a driver is missing or I must be overlooking some sort of keyboard preferences option somewhere...

I also have yet to get the keyboard working as a Bluetooth device. I can get it to show up as "paired", but something is wrong when I use it that way-- nothing happens except that the device does come on and the device name pops up in braille (and in the bluetooth list of the computer) so it is indeed coming on. It simply has to be plugged in via USB right now to be used.

Most of the problem is probably my lack of familiarity with all of this stuff. It is just all very different that what I'm familiar with. (I'm a Macintosh Graphics person. )

If I figure anything out I'll post it in case others are interested.

Thanks. No, I didn't ever ask. Seems a bit late in the game for a refund to be an option, but at least maybe I'll avoid continuing to upgrade the second license in the future if I can make this work properly.

supported by the PAC Mate connection and how this is enabled.

I have been hesitant to install a v12 or v13 demo on this machine to test as
I don't want to mess anything up on the full install of v.11. I was hoping
to hear from a PAC Mate user who tried this feature.

When FS called a while back to try and get me to buy a new SMA (and to
upgrade to v.12, just before V.13 came out) the sales guy confirmed JAWS is
included with a PAC Mate in this way, so again, I think this is quite
legit., I just want to figure out any limitations and options with this

less.

Well there we go again, paying more than once for the same thing. Frustrating, isn't it? They certainly never mentioned the "authorize" option to me when we were looking at buying both a few years back.

Do you mind if I ask what the dongle cost? And is it version-specific somehow?

Those toolbars can be a pain in the behind and I do my best to avoid them, so when I find myself stuck in them, I jump to that address bar right quick. I usually do an alt+d to get to the address bar, then shift+tab into the body of the web page. Kinda funky but it works.

Yes. However, F6 sometimes takes two presses. Control-F6 focuses you right
back on the page. The suggestion came from Negoslav, and it works every time

I have this too. Refresh doesn't often work. To focus the virtual pc cursor, Rout Jaws cursor to the document and left click, hoping not to hit a link and move to another page.

Here are the instructions FS sent me for deleting all settings.

To set JAWS to the defaults:

If you are using any third party scripts, back them up first.

1. Press the windows logo key to open the Start Menu.

2. Press the letter P for Programs or go to the all programs sub-menu.

3. Press the letter J till you come to the JAWS version you are
looking for and press enter.

4. Press Enter on Explore JAWS.

5. Down arrow to explore my settings and press Enter.

6. Press control+A to select all settings then hold down the shift key
and press the delete key. If prompted, press enter on yes.

7. Restart JAWS.

The latter is usually what happens to me -- their exact setup matching

works just fine for them.

As to their suggestion of "resetting the JAWS user settings" all I can
think
of is either clear out all your user-defined scripts from the ENU folder
(which you only do after backing them all up somewhere), or using the
settings center and setting the user dialog items to their default values.

5 SMA at $120 each for a total of $600. You got current + SMA for $100 less.

Interesting. I've got a PacMate that I rarely use any more, and never paid
much attention to that option to "Use Authorization from PacMate" under the
Advanced button in Options/Basics. Very interesting, indeed. And here I just
purchased and received my dongle to avoid those annoying non-authorization
issues.

Both jaws 12 and 13 work fine with the latest firefox. I use FF for
nearly all browsing, the only exceptions being a few sites that just
refuse to work with it.

Here's a question I have: apparently one can enable JAWS to run from a demo copy (without the demo timer turning it off) by hooking up a PAC Mate (if you have one). (A FS guy told us this at a trade show this past summer.) Well, we have a "spare" PAC Mate that we basically never use because my daughter prefers her BrailleNote Apex.

Does anyone know the deal with this? I mean, isn't demo JAWS the same as $900 JAWS that just turns off after what, 30 or 40 minutes?

We bought JAWS 9 with the SMA that got us to 11 and we're doing okay for now. I thought of buying the new SMA, but what does that gain for us? We've never called for support after the initial setup all the way from from v.9 to 10 to 11 so I'm not seeing that as a justification, and this is on a desktop machine so it isn't like we need to be mobile-- this is just plugging in a USB cable, right?

What am I missing? We've never tried this because we've always had a paid copy of JAWS and so far we haven't gone past v.11. Just trying to look to the future.

Another way to look at your situation, is in how much money you actually
saved. If you had kept current, going from JAWS 6 through 15 would have been
5 SMA at $120 each for a total of $600. You got current + SMA for $100 less.

So you came out ahead. Congratulations!

Of course I'm not accounting for inflation and the value of the dollar in
all this, but still...

Yes, the FS tech rep should have explained how to run the test with the
/default switch and then explained how to remove the user settings if
necessary. As others have pointed out, not very good tech support.

Their tech support seems to vary a lot depending on which tech support
person you get. I had an opportunity to be one of those support people once
upon a time. I'm glad I stayed where I was!

settings and scripts needed to be copied to another folder and deleted
from the user settings folder.
Then,
as you say, the individual files could be copied back one by one to
find the culprit.

I think I'm just restating what you said, but I want to be sure. I do

work for many users who would receive it and perhaps discouraging
others completely.

they don't have a clue, or that they can't duplicate what you're
experiencing.
The latter is usually what happens to me -- their exact setup
matching mine works just fine for them.

the ENU folder (which you only do after backing them all up
somewhere), or using the settings center and setting the user dialog
items to their default values.

Actually it was upgrading from 5 on my personal computer and that cost me
$400 for letting my SMAs lapse. I believe the charge for the SMA for 14
and
15 was around $120. For anyone who can afford it, staying current with
SMAs
is a wise thing to do.

I should also mention that I have the home edition of XP, and JAWS costs
more for anyone with a pro edition of Windows, so it could have been
worse.

an SMA is less than half that price so long as you keep current.
