boot into safe mode using jaws

Alan Dicey <adicey@...>

Hello Folks,
I had an A T and T "In Home" Technical Support person come out to my place last year, when an "executable file" in Windows got corrupted, thus crashing my system, and he did not even try to do a repair using Safe Mode or anything.
He simply reformatted my "system's Drive" and reinstalled Windows with my O S disk.

That jerk charged me $179 for less than half an hour.
He did not even install any of my "Device Drivers"!

Yeah, I know, I should have done something while he was here, but I could not hear my JAWS, since it was gone, and I had no idea what he was doing.

Well, I complained all the way up passed his Supervisor, Director, and all the way to A T and T main office.
I still had to pay the $179, but it cost A T and T much more than that, with all the bad rap I gave them to anyone and everyone I could, including all 300 people in my address list.

So, lesson learned.
Never, Never trust a technical repair person you are not sure of.

With Best Regards,
Alan

Dorothy,

there are a number of tools that can be run in safe mode, both already on the computer such as chkdsk for making sure the hard drive is ok, scan disk, for checking OS file integrity, removal and replacement tools for system device drivers, check tools for the same, and a whole host of little hidden things a tech can do.

system restore can as well be run in safe mode so you can "go back to ..." and then restart the computer as it was then.

with things like USB drives and network operations available you can download and./or retrieve off of a network (this is the dangerous thing being mentioned by this person) tools that can be used to diagnose and fix troubles.

so on and so forth

and I called out a local engineer who said jaws 11 may have hit a poor patch

Hi every one

Please read all of this before carrying out the steps.

To save the guessing of when to hit f8 & so on to boot into safe
mode, you can do the following.
press windows r to open the run box
in the run box type, msconfig & press enter
the system configuration window will open
either shift tab once to get up into the tabs & use the right arrow,
or use control tab & find the boot tab
its called the Boot tab in windows 7, boot.ini tab in xp
once on the boot tab, start tabbing through the options & you will find
boot option Safe boot, you need to check this
then tab once more & you will find radio buttons
use the arrow keys to choose either minimal or network
again dont forget, if you choose network, while you are connected to
the internet you have no securety running.
now just tab to the ok button & hit the space bar.
on xp you will get a window saying need to restart, on windows 7 you
will not recieve this & need to restart the system yourself.
On xp when the system boots into safe mode you will here the windows
log on sound & then you will hear a ding sound,
the ding is a window stating you are in safe mode, just press enter to say
ok.
You will not get this ding sound in windows 7.
dont forget things in safe mode are a lot slower, so wait a while for
the desktop & so on to load before you try to start your screen reader.
In xp when you get your screen reader running you may find a system
configuration window saying, is in selective mode & so on, I normally
tab to never show this again & check it, then tab to ok
Once you are finished doing what you want to in safe mode, you need
to go back into msconfig into the boot tab & uncheck boot into safe mode.
If you dont do this, you will just keep starting up in safe mode.

Hope this helps....

hi:
I notice you are still on this jaws list so you must still be using jaws so I guess voice over on the mac is not the best.
if you have a mac then you don't need jaws so quit clutterin up my inbox about the mac.
this is a jaws list, not a mac list.

Don't quite agree with you there. Yes apple hardware is more expensive
but it's not to finance side projects like accessibility. If windows
wanted to, they could have made narator in to what voiceover is today
by just putting some efort in to it and interacting more with their
users. My view of apples expensive hardware is that it's more
expensive for a reason, you get what you pay for, e.g. a apple
computer would last you a lot longer than a pc plus the hardware and
software are designed for each other where with pc drivers must be
written for every piece of the pc just to talk to the other bits.
Let's not go off topic here, I just think apple was smarter than
windows in making accessibility more of a priority a few years ago,
these roomers of narator becoming a full on screen reader, if you ask
me it's windows realising apple was rite in the first place concerning
accessibility but now they will have to try to play catch up.

Agree with you guys but as I said don't put your hopes on narator or
on FS dropping the price for jaws. Sure there will be a improvement in
narator but doubt if it will be big enough to mean anything. The thing
with FS is they don't give a rats ass for the individual which is us
the users. That's what I like about voiceover, sure it's not yet up
there with jaws but apple doesn't even ask $1000 for it but still they
listen to every single one of their users.

I don't see what the big deal is if people have to move to JAWS 13 to have Windows 8. At the end of the day it's peoples own decision whether they upgrade and for some time after Windows 8 is released you'll still be able to have Windows 7 as an option on new PCs so peoples computers are still going to do what they did prior to the release of Windows 8.

no, leaked plus it being available from file sharing sites suggests that it is *not* legal. I gather you had that sussed out already though.
On the other hand, IE8 is entirely legal and has been available for some time. *grin*

And this is a legal version of IE 8? I was under the impression that IE 8 has not yet been released for public beta testing by MS. So any version of IE 8 that has been "leaked" prematurely onto the web is probably an illegal hacked copy. Indeed, it is my understanding that the public beta of Windows 8 will not be released until early next year. You have to register with MS to be a beta tester. I know this because I was a beta tester for IE8 and had to provide feedback to MS.

Where does the money come from then to fund the accessibility side of Apple products if it's not from sales of product? Also, you mention about the apple hardware all working together. It could be argued that to develop products for a system which isn't so closed shop as Apples products is harder and more expensive because the drivers aren't all generic. As for product quality, I know several people who have had Macs and PCs fail, and likewise I know people who have had both PCs and Macs go on for a long time. But as you say we don't want to go off topic.

On 8/29/11, Peter Holdstock <peterholdstock@msn.com> wrote:
Yes but Apple charge every user much more for the hardware so that helps
subsidise the accessibility side of things. Same with all the other Apple
products with accessibility.

Hi Ed.

I agree with you on all points! Most of the applications I use on a
daily basis, besides email and web browsing, require scripting
support from Jaws. If we all go for the lowest common denominator,
even if it's free, some people will literally lose their livlihoods.
