Hello,
Install JAWS with the English option.
You will still be able to red  passages in other languages if:
1. An appropriate synthesizer for that language is installed.
2. The passage is appropriately marked up so that JAWS can recognize the language changes.
3. You have auto-detect languages option enabled in JAWS.
One slight disadvantage would be that JAWS information about Heading levels and lists will still be in the English  language.

Hi there.
I installed the latest offline version of JAWS 2019 on my Surface Pro 6 and added Arabic from the options menu during installation as I wanted to have both Arabic and English multilingual support. After restarting my computer, I found that the JAWS UI language was switched to Arabic. I changed JAWS language back to English and things were ok during that time.
I restarted the computer again and JAWS language was changed to Arabic for an unknown reason. Is there a way to select English as the default and primary language for JAWS?
Regards.

Kevin,

You might want to take a look at "Get iTuned Into Audio" from Hartgen Consultancy.

http://www.hartgen.org/itunes

It is not free and costs about $52.00 U. S. I did not see what version of JAWS is used, but you could contact Brian if interested.

I haven't used it and know nothing about iTunes, but remembered seeing it listed when I was looking for a tutorial on something else.

Hope this helps,

Margaret

Hi Net bat,

Only capitalizing all the letters in a word is considered yelling or strong
emphasis on that particular word. Capitalizing the first letter of a sentence,
names or wherever else capital letters are normally used is just plain correct
punctuation. Now, how's that for improper English?! LOL

Yes, that's what I just said. If a capital letter is not seen after a period,
it "assumes" that the period is present for some other purpose besides ending a
sentence, and thus does not pause.\
See, it's encouraging us to follow proper grammar/language rules. A good thing,
surely! 8grins*

i know sighted people would complain about puntuation. But the only way i can
get the vocalizer voices to pause at the end of a sentence is to use a comma
instead of a period.
BTW.
i noticed that this message did pause on sentences.
so i investigated. grin. If you don't capatalize the first letter of the

I don’t think Vocalizer is any better. Much of the time the pause is an
acceptable level, but there are enough times when it’s almost as if there is no
pause at all. I’ll go back to see if I forgot to type a period and find one
there, but Vocalizer doesn’t pause as I would hope. I’ll play with the
recommended tweaks someone posted.

I think that a pause after a period is largely synthesiser dependent. So some
synths will insert longer ones, others won’t. By default, the 1core voices from
Microsoft have what is, to me, an insanely lengthy pause between both period
and the next sentence and after a comma. You can adjust this in a very well
hidden and protected .ini file. I don’t think Eloquence has anything similar.
Maybe reduce the general speech rate (although I know this isn’t exactly what
you want), or try Vocalizer, or one of the Microsoft voices.

Hi, folks.

I decided to get serious about learning JFW. Lots of interesting discoveries,
and, a few puzzles.

Here is one. I noticed that with or without punctuation spoken, JAWS kind of
rushes past what I consider to be normal length punctuation pause intervals.
With Window-Eyes, I was able to put a period character after char.chr
dictionary entries, thereby increasing the pause interval. This does not work
with the JAWS Eloquence voice, however. To my question.

Is there a setting in JAWS to adjust punctuation pause intervals?

Thank you in advance for your help,

Lou N.

If there's a way to get at the help content historically
available, regardless of where it is, that's worth sharing in my opinion,
even on a "competing list" like this one. And I really don't consider the
lists in competition in any meaningful sense.

I'd love to see "blind technology" traffic become less
fragmented, not more, though there is definite room for separate lists for
things like JAWS, NVDA, Narrator, etc. I still, for myself, would prefer
a
grand, unified "screen reader and blind technology" group myself, as there
is a lot of information on each of these that are completely applicable or
easily translatable to the others. But history often dictates structure,
and it sure does at the moment.

With list management software like Groups.io has, each
user
can easily tailor their own experience even on high-traffic groups if they
wish to do so.

Hi Daniel.

I don’t have access to JAWS now, but I think I still can point you in the right direction. You can indeed set JAWS to use a different sound card then the Windows default one. Here’s what to look for. Before I tell you what to do, however, you need to be careful, because you could accidentally set JAWS to where you can’t hear it, so try to learn the keyboard shortcuts to get it back to the Windows default sound card if necessary.

Go into the JAWS windeaow, or the menu if you have it in your system tray.

Now, look for the Utilities menu. This may be under the options menu, I don't remember, but it's either there or in the main menu.

Once there, look for sound card, or something like that.

Under this menu, you will find the different sound card that JAWS can use. Select the one you want. Once selected, it may take a few seconds to take, so don't panic if you don't hear any speech for a little bit. If it seems to be real long, and you still don't hear anything, get JAWS back to the default card and try again. This is why it's important to memorize the keyboard shortcuts to get speech back in case of this situation happening.

Eventually, you will get speech out of the card you want, so long as it's one that JAWS recognizes. Here's another thing to keep in mind. Sometimes the sound card may have a bit of a cryptic label in JAWS, so you might have to guess at it, especially if you have multiple cards, and if one of them has more than one entry in the list.

That's all there is to it. A nice feature that I wish JAWS had is to hit a shortcut key to get sound back where it was last working. Maybe it does now, but it didn't when I did this a few years ago.

Hope this is helpful for you.

I just redid this again, using different times, and get the same behavior when I try tabbing through the results via the keyboard, but what's really weird is that if I have mouse tracking on, and am moving the mouse over these various trip plan options, the visible text is being read.  The first is always announced as Blank and the following items as dead silence.

I cannot even get a keyboard and screen reader based workaround to work, at least with conventional commands.

If JAWS has a script available that allows you to move the mouse over the screen, and mouse tracking is on, you should be able to hear those results read to you as the mouse pointer is hovering over each of the things that look like trip option buttons on that page, but definitely are not implemented as buttons.   It has been some months since I was last using JAWS actively, and do not know if a direct mouse movement via keyboard option is available or if tracking and announcement of what's under it are available, either.   But based on my NVDA experimentation that's the only way I can find to get all of the options to be read by the screen reader.

is left this way, I don’t think JAWS would ever have a way of displaying this information. You might try using INSERT plus SPACE, followed by O, then S,

to see if the picture has any actual text within it.

Subject: Jaws not seeing part of Mobile website

f
Could someone out there please have a look at this website and give me your thoughts?

The ETS(Edmonton Transit System) has 2 web-based trip planning applications:
A "main" version and a "mobile" version.
I especially like the mobile version of this web application because it's just html-based -- no clutter & no fuss.
But, there's a problem
Maybe the best way to describe it is to walk you through it:

Let's suppose I want to go from my house to the airport.
I would point my browser to the "mobile" Trip Planner webpage:
http://m.etstripplanner.edmonton.ca/planyourtrip.aspx
The first thing it assks for is: Select trip start location
There's a combo bbox of 4 "Start location types" you can choose from.
Pick "Landmark".
In the associated Edit field, type in: lewis.
You should see a list of possible landmarks that contain the word: Lewis
From this list, pick "Lewis Farms Transit Station" and press "Enter".
The edit field should now contain this text.

Next, you have to Select the trip end location
Again, from the combo box list of available End location types, pick "Landmark"
In the associated edit field, type: airport
You will be shown a list of 8 possibilityes containing the word: airport
From this list, pick: Edmonton International Airport -- It's the fourth in this list.
Fill in the rest of the stuff on this page: just pick "reasonable" values.
Once everything is specified, go to the "Get Trip Plan" button and press Enter.

And now, this is where the problem happens:
The "Trip Suggestions" returned to me are not visible to Jaws.
A sighted viewer can pick them up, but Jaws does not.

Could someone out there please have a look at this,
offer an explanation as to what causes this,
and suggest a work-around fix?
I would REALLY appreciate it!
PS: The browser I use is Firefox.
In order to see if another browser might work better on this site,
I tried it with the MS Edge browser -- same thing.
So I think the issue is a Jaws issue.
