If the files don't read at all, is it possible they contain scanned images which you need to process through OCR software?
Anyway, Accessibility settings can be found on the Edit menu.

Re: Need Settings for optimizing Jaws in Windows 7
David <davidwhitehead1957@...>
Hello there;
Well, you can make windows live mail be a little more responsive, and, to behave with jaws a little better by doing the folloing,
Note, if your using the latest version of WLM, you will be dealing with the ribbon,
Anyway try the following;
1, open windows live mail,
2, press the alt key, you should most likely hear, home tab, You can now right arrow to view, Or? You can simply press alt+v=view.
3, now use the tab key until you hear; "message list drop down", Now press the spacebar,
4, you now need to, Use the tab key, and when you hear, One line view, Press enter.
5, again, press alt+v=view,
6, again tab until you hear, Reading pane drop down, again press spacebar, Now tab and enter on, off,
There are a few more, however, lets work with these couple settings first.

Hello there;
The easiest way is to,
1, go to start menu, you will hear, search box edit, Type in, theme, you then will hear; Change the theme press enter. Now you have landed in the list of themes,
The trick is now to find the classic theme, You will need to use your arrow keys,
Once you hear jaws announce classic theme, press enter, you should hear a sound, signifying the change, now alt+f4,
This is mostlikely the easier way, This can also be done through the personalized items. Through the desktop.
Hope this helps.

Actually?
Things should work fine right out of the box.
The only change you may want, is to set the theme to classic, thus taking the Desktop out of the alt+tab cycle.
Other wise? Things should work just fine, And really no need to navigate since you can find things through the search edit within the start menu.

Hi, all.
I'm between computers here, and have a question about Jaws activation counts.
I know I could call FS about this, but figured I might get a quicker answer from the list.
Regarding activations, does a single-license Jaws user like myself have a given number of activations for each separate version of Jaws, or is the allotted number of 3 activations constant across all versions of Jaws collectively?
I am getting a couple of new computers set up for both office and home, and
am trying to figure out how best to proceed, while still keeping an older Windows XP machine around as a back-up in case that is needed as well.
I have Jaws 12, but a few earlier versions of Jaws that I could probably use if neded, if that would give me more activations to work with.
Thanks!
Tom from Michigan

Those navigation features are common for screen readers, including Window-Eyes and System Access. I do like the virtual ribbon workaround in Jaws, and I like the research-it feature, but unfortunately, it seems harder to maintain than it is probably worth. Some of the features like the word analyzer I don't find much use for, but maybe I would in certain academic pursuits.
About the only thing Jaws has going for it right now is the marginal cost to me of learning a new program. I hope they gdet time at F.S. to rework the system into some smaller modules that aren't so klugey and bug-prone.
----- Original Message ----- From: "Spencer McLean" <smclean@csy.ca> To: <jfw@lists.the-jdh.com> Sent: Thursday, August 18, 2011 4:38 PM Subject: JAWS and Negativity
Hi Everyone:
Since joining this list about a week ago, I've noticed a great deal of negativity about JAWS. I don't want to downplay its problems -- it has a few. And it seems like many on this list have encountered more difficulties than I have which, naturally, puts one in a gloomier frame of mind, not only with regard to the application itself but also to its future. Yes, JAWS's pricetag is waaay too high, its scripts are meager, its glitchiness is frustrating, its documentation is lackluster, its tendency not to do what you set it to do is legendary... But... It has some pretty awesome features as well.
- navigating via SelectAGraphic/Paragraph/Heading features have - revolutionized the way I read webpages. Experience with these can get me - to the content faster than sighted people, provided that I'm at least - passingly familiar with the website in question. SelectAParagraph is - probably my favorite feature in JAWS. Go to any News site, click on an - article and tell me that SelectAParagraph doesn't rock. You avoid all the - mess and get right to the targeted content. For me, it's almost replaced - placemarkers which were never reliable anyway given the rate at which - webpages are redesigned.
- Personalized settings for webpage? Fantastic! I hate inline frames. If - there are any Slate Magazine fans on this list, having to bump over that - stupid Facebook inline frame to read articles drove me bunkers until I - found out how to turn that off in CTRL+JAWSKey+V. And Slate. Com isn't the - only site that puts that Facebook inline in inconvenient places. And for - those like me who've been all-but-driven to madness by SayAll's obsessive - need to vocalize Same-Page links on Wikipedia pages, you can turn that - off under the Links branch in personalized settings. And the best part is - that you can customize these settings for individual websites.
- Finally, some of the navigation keys are pretty sweet. Visited links is - the most useful, for me. Going right to that spot you typically visit and - hitting enter, so click. Going right to placemarkers on webpages that - don't update a lot? Nice. Jumping to lines on a page? Paging through - paragraphs? I use them all to get through the mess.
My intention is not to chastise. Like I mentioned above, JAWS has its problems and its important to point them; I recognize that. So for all of you who've held Freedom Scientific to account over JAWS's issues, I raise my glass to you. But it has some pretty amazing navigational features as well and I don't want that to be forgotten in the din.
Cheers, Spence
PS: Does anyone know if the JAWS developers have any intentions of implementing that Voiceover-in-Safari feature for the Mac which keeps all webpage menus closed until you click on them to open them? If that wouldn't clean up web browsing for Jaws in IE or Firefox...

Hello there;
The easiest way is to,
1, go to start menu, you will hear, search box edit, Type in, theme, you then will hear; Change the theme press enter. Now you have landed in the list of themes,
The trick is now to find the classic theme, You will need to use your arrow keys,
Once you hear jaws announce classic theme, press enter, you should hear a
sound, signifying the change, now alt+f4,
This is mostlikely the easier way, This can also be done through the personalized items. Through the desktop.
Hope this helps.

The Windows7 interface is brand new to those who are accustomed to Windows XP but, in my opinion, it's so much easier to access and follow. If you don't mind bearing with me, I can give you a look/feel and a overview of how the start menu works.
The menu consists of several elements.
. Instant Search Edit Field
. A List of frequently accessed locations
. A toolbar
. List of applications
. An "All Programs" button
Instant Search
When you first open the Start menu, focus is placed in the Instant Search field. You can type text into this field to quickly locate a program, document, email, website in your history and more. If you want to open WordPad for example, type, "wordpad" without the quotes and focus is immediately placed on WordPad. You can press ENTER to launch the application.
Focus within the Instant search field is unique. It always has focus. Even if you use the UP AND DOWN ARROW to navigate among the search results, press BACKSPACE and you remove the last letter you typed. Press any letter and it's added to your search term. You can use the UP AND DOWN ARROW at any time to review the search results.
Clear the results and return to an empty Instant Search field at any time with ESCAPE.
Take some time to experiment with this first feature and I think you'll find it's much more intuitive than slogging through menus.
Pinning Items to the Start Menu
If you find an application you use a lot, you can pin it to the start menu. After locating it with instant search, press the WINODWS APPLICATION KEY and locate the option to "pin to start menu." Activate the option and the application is appended to the top of the Start Menu. When you open the start menu, just press UP AND DOWN ARROW to navigate among the items. Press ENTER on a pinned item to launch the item.
You can unpin items in the same manner. Focus on a pinned item and open the Windows Application menu. Activate "unpin from Start Menu" to remove the item from the Start Menu. The item is removed but you can always find it using Instant Search.
You can pin documents, email, applications, web sites and more to your start menu. It's a pretty powerful feature of Windows 7.
Frequently Accessed Locations
Use TAB once from within the Instant Search Field to locate a list of frequently used locations. Use UP AND DOWN ARROW to navigate among the options. Press ENTER to launch the associated item.
Toolbar
Press RIGHT ARROW once from within the Instant Search and the shut down option is located. Press ENTER to shut down your computer. For additional options, press RIGHT ARROW once more. This opens a list of options that includes lock, log off, restart and more. Press ENTER on any of these items to activate them.
All Programs
The All Programs button is just above the Instant Search. Press UP ARROW to focus on it immediately. Press ENTER on the option to display a list of all the applications on your computer. Much like the original XP menu.
Press ENTER to expand a folder and review its contents and ENTER to launch an item.
Close the list and return the instant search field at any time with ESCAPE.
Jump Lists
Windows 7 features a new feature called Jump Lists. If you have multiple documents open in an application, you can locate these documents in the start menu.
For example, I have word pinned to my Start Menu. If I have five documents open in word, I can focus on Word in my Start Menu and tap the RIGHT ARROW KEY to display a list of open documents. UP AND DOWN ARROW navigates among the documents. I press ENTER on my choice and focus moves to the document immediately. I like this much better than using ALT-TAB to move among all my documents and open applications.
The Windows Taskbar also has jump lists and additional features that I find irreplaceable and a wonderful improvement to the operating system.

David:
It's funny you should ask this, because I am investigating this very question as we speak.
What I have heard is that Windows Live Mail is closest to Outlook Express, which I currently use on a Windows XP machine.
So, I'll probably start with the Live Mail option.
The trick will be synchronizing it with my personal G-mail account.
If you have any thoughts on how to gget Windows Live Mail, and how to synchronize it with my g-mail account, that would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Not sure if you no this, However, there's one decision you will need to make and that is, What email client will you use, since windows 7 doesn't come with a email client built in.
You have choice, windows live mail which is free, MSoutlook 2007 or 2010 in fact even 2003 would work, also thunder bird, which I no nothing about. These are just a few.

Hello there;
The easiest way is to,
1, go to start menu, you will hear, search box edit, Type in, theme, you then will hear; Change the theme press enter.

Things should work fine right out of the box.

Other wise? Things should work just fine, And really no need to navigate since you can find things through the search edit within the start menu.

What is word analizer?

-----Original Message----- From: Steve Sent: Thursday, August 18, 2011 6:40 PM To: The Jaws for Windows support list. Subject: Re: JAWS and Negativity Those navigation features are common for screen readers, including Window-Eyes and System Access. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Spencer McLean" <smclean@csy.ca> To: <jfw@lists.the-jdh.com> Sent: Thursday, August 18, 2011 4:38 PM Subject: JAWS and Negativity Hi Everyone:

Re: Need Settings for optimizing Jaws in Windows 7
David <davidwhitehead1957@...>
The Windows7 interface
