Hi Shirley,

I would either get a sighted person to take a look with you when you want to place an order or call Microsoft Accessibility, ask them to connect to your computer and take a look. If it says there is an error then obviously something else is going on.

I just went to Amazon.com and it’s basically the same as what I get on Amazon Canada. Here is Jaws speech history after I added an item to my cart:

heading level 1‑ Added to Cart

Cart subtotal (1 item): $49.99

Cart Button

Proceed to checkout (1 item) Button

Main region end

If I activate the “Proceed to checkout (1 item)” button I then see my usual shipping address, my default credit card is selected and pressing b easily gets me to the “place your order” button, I can literally complete an order after I found the item and added it to my cart in 6 or 8 seconds. This is with Edge (or Chrome), in IE it probably takes twice as long even for the pages to load.

That’s the problem: I don’t find the checkout button. Pressing B gives me nothing. And I get a message telling me there is an error with my order and to check back later. That’s mostly with Firefox. With Internet Explorer, I have some trouble but can generally put it through—but I’m concerned about how much longer we will be able to use IE. I can’t figure out what’s going on and did call the accessibility phone number, but they can’t figure out what’s happening. I just wanted to know if any of you are having the same problem.

Thanks. I just placed a large order, and this time it went through after two tries. Success!

Cheerfully,

Shirley

Hi Shirley,

Don’t you have your address and credit card information saved? When I am in my cart I just use “b” for buttons and it takes me directly to the “Proceed to Checkout” button.

Once I activate it, all my information is there, shipping address, the card I have used last time and literally all that is left to do is to again use the button quick nav key until I get to “Place your order”, I press enter and that’s it, a few seconds later I get the thank-you for shopping at Amazon message and seconds later my email dings with the order confirmation email. In my opinion Amazon has made an art of quick online checkout. You may want to look at enabling one-click checkout.

Of course if I want to select a different address or credit card I have to do this before I click “Place my order”.

If you have an Amazon Echo speaker you can also set up voice purchasing. I just tried this, I had 5 items in my cart, but a few of them I just put in there for later so I activated the “Save for Later” button.

After I had only the 2 items in my cart which I wanted now I asked my Echo Dot “What’s in my cart”. It told me I had 2 items and what they were, then I told it to “Place my order”. I was prompted for my voice code which I previously set up in the Alexa app (you can add this or disable it), after I spoke my 4-digit code Alexa said “I placed your order”, of course it used my default shipping address and credit card, it also told me the total and that was it.

Best regards,

Sieghard

Yes, it is strange.
If one of my regular web searches takes me to an Amazon page with a variety of results, then I have the headings, but not from the Amazon search.
They are links and numbered, like #1, #2, etc.
I can search the page for the number sign and press F3 to move down the page though.

Hi Glen,

I am surprised you don’t get headings for the search results. Below is a bunch of Jaws speech history, as an example, I searched for “Logitech MK540”, one of Logitech’s mouse/keyboard combos. After I typed the search term I went to the top of the page, cleared the Jaws history and then pressed first 1 to go to the heading level 1 which gives me information about the search results, then I press 2 repeatedly, each time it goes to the next search result and I did not edit the below at all:

1-16 of 30 results for "Logitech MK540"
Sort by: Featured heading level 1‑ Combo box‑
Logitech MK540 Wireless Keyboard Mouse Combo heading level 2‑ Link‑
Logitech MK545 ADVANCED Wireless Combo, English (920-008695) heading level 2‑ Link‑
Logitech MK270 Wireless Combo, English (920-004536) heading level 2‑ Link‑
Logitech MK360 Wireless Combo, English (920-003376) heading level 2‑ Link‑
Logitech Cordless Desktop MK335 Keyboard and Mouse Combo, 1 Count heading level 2‑ Link‑
Amazon Basics Wireless Computer Keyboard and Mouse Combo - Full Size - US Layout (QWERTY) heading level 2‑ Link

I am using Windows 10, latest public version of Edge and Jaws 2020 latest version, but this has worked like this for me for longer than I can remember or maybe I should say I can’t remember this not being like this.

I did, by the way, copy the exact link to that page and plugged it into the address bar of IE and I still had the same headings.

I usually don't search for items from Amazon with the Amazon search, because it will display its results without headings, and although I can list links, you don't get as much description in the list links dialog.

So I usually do a web search for something with the first word being Amazon.com and that will find lots of Amazon.com links for whatever I'm looking for.

I can use Windows 7 and IE and get through, it is not bad when you use the various Jaws tools.
I'm using JFW 2019.
The only issues I ever have with JFW, IE, and Amazon.com, is sometimes when I load an Amazon page Jaws crashes.

What are you using now? I would very much recommend you go straight to the new Microsoft Edge which is also a chromium based browser, but in my opinion nicer even than Google Chrome in some ways. For one thing it has a built in reader function called “Immersive Reader”. This is not available on all webpages just as is the case with the iOS reader view, but on many news and tech sites where you read articles it is available and it gets rid of all the clutter and there is even a read aloud function where you can select some very impressive human-sounding voices which can then read it to you.

The link above takes you to the Edge website and if you go to the top of the page and then use 1 and b you land right on the button for “Get stable build for Windows 10” button.

Activate the button and then go to the very end of the page and activate the “I Agree” link and the installer will download.

Keep in mind that for best performance you should be using the latest version of Jaws 2020.

Sieghard

Arrowing or tabbing is the last methods folks should use on a web page,
unless you have all day to spend looking for something.
You only arrow when you get to the section of the page that is of interest,
and since most pages now have hundreds of tabs available, so tabbing around
is not really a good option either.
Twenty years ago when web pages were relatively simple, tabbing and arrowing
were acceptable methods of navigation, but there is just too much to make
that viable.
Insert + F5 will list about anything available, such as edit fields, links,
combo boxes and buttons.

Shirley,
If there is something that I cannot locate, such as a particular button, I use the search command, in this example, I'd do control + F and enter
checkout
and press enter.
Then I would press F3 to keep looking down the page, since there is likely more than one instance of that word.
Or if it does not find it, look for the word Check.
HTH.

When I most recently used Amazon, I had no difficulties with the checkout process at all. I think I was using VoiceOver for Mac with Safari, and it was some time last year.

The checkout button on primenow.amazon.com (a different site from the main Amazon site) works fine on the Mac with Safari, but under Windows with JAWS, pressing space or enter on the button did nothing. I had to simulate a left mouse button click. So, I tend to use the Mac for that.

On Windows, Chrome is what I would recommend these days for most purposes.

Its not you.

Amazon is broken, and has been for a couple of months.

You might try their accessibility site: www.amazon.com/access

But no promises there.

On their site they have a customer service toll free number, I’d call that as well.

Has the Amazon checkout become more complicated or is it just me?

When I use Firefox, I get to the checkout part and I get a message that says there was an error. When I use IE I can get through it, but it still seems more difficult. Anyone else notice this?

Thanks.

i don't find the checkout either the normal way arrowing or tabbing around the screen
i have to move to the top of the screen then use the windows control f keys to search for the checkout words. then i can do it. and this is with firefox.

Sieghard
