Re: Beta 13

Peter Holdstock <peterholdstock@...>

If using Windows 7 and/or Vista you'll possibly notice a slower start up time initially as Windows 7 learns what you use the most and loads that first. So if you install a newer version of jaws it may be that windows doesn't see it as the same programme as before. Over a few days that should improve.

Tom,

Depending on your version of Word, there are different ways to get at this.
But somewhere in options there are checkboxes to control what characters
Word will display, and I think a blank is one of them.

Also there may be a setting in the text page of the Settings Center to
handle this, or perhaps in the Key Labels page, where you can mute or unmute
the speaking of a spacebar press.

A few areas to browse around in.

Hi, all.

I have just noticed a strange problem when using Jaws with my work computer
when in Microsoft Word.

When I am editing a document, all of the other characters speak except for
the space. In other words, when I hit the space bar, nothing happens. It
used to be that Jaws would say "blank", to indicate the existence of a blank
space.

I have never seen this happen before, and can't imagine why Jaws will not
speak this character.

Does anyone have suggestions for correcting this?

Just for the record, I'm using Jaws 11 with Windows XP and office 2007 at
work.

Thanks!

JAWS 13 with RhapsodyBlind and BlindTunes

John Martyn

Hi all,
I have just tested on the windows 7 and XP platforms with JAWS 13.
I must say, it works very well with windows 7 and I am posting this to both lists. I didn't notice anything wrong and all functions within the scripts worked well.
However, with windows XP, JAWS 13 is a nightmare and ruins RhapsodyBlind quite a bit. Things do work with rhapsody, but information that was spoken before is missing and there isn't anything I can do to correct this.
Blind Tunes faired much better with only the column sorting was messed up big time. All other function seemed to work until I got to the iTunes Store. It was a struggle to get pages to load without much delay and stalled on all searches.
I noticed that JAWS 13 completely slowed down the startup time in XP. The only way to fix the script issues was to completely uninstall everything Freedom scientific and reload my old JAWS versions.
Just switching to another JAWS version wasn't enough, it was the common components that were the issue from the results. I would have left JAWS 13 but it messed up even testing with the other versions.
I must state again, it works fine on windows 7 so don't be wary unless you have XP.
I am relieved that it works fine on windows 7, but I'm afraid XP and JAWS 13 do not get along. Perhaps FS will fix some issues, but I will never test out JAWS 13 on XP again. It's time to move forward anyway.
So, for all those playing beta games, beware the XP issues running the scripts as I have no way to fix it.
Thanks for reading and for those who aren't familiar with the Rhapsody and iTunes scripts please visit:
www.RhapsodyBlind.com
www.BlindTunes.net
Regards,
John Martyn

That is the way I prefer it, hearing the space all the time when typing fast
is more than annoying to me, However, you need to go into keyboard settings
and keep hitting the letter s until you hear space and unmute it.
Personally that is one of the first changes I always make in Jaws, right
after I change the speed. It is one of the reasons I never bought Window
Eyes to help see if it worked better on certain transcription platforms, I
could not turn off the space. Keep in mind I type fast most of the time,
however.

The dictionary is way better than the dictionary available with Research It.
A few hints:
1. Use the JAWS bookmark feature to identify important links you will use
frequently.
2. Remember that, despite the availability of the search box, skip it
initially and hit either Dictionary or Thesaurus first. Then, fill in the
word in the edit box.
3. The results you are looking for will be in a table, so hit "t" after
you've run the search.
4. The search button is the first button after the edit box. It isn't
labeled.
Keep these in mind, and you'll do fine. It is a very powerful product (and
it is free). There is just lots of clutter.

I believe this is a JAWS issue and here's why:

Because JAWS does not come pre-loaded in a Windows install like
Voiceover does, there is a "bootstrapping" process that one must
endeavor to repeat in order to install Windows so that JAWS can then
be installed.

Generally, I'm in favor of keeping the list on topic, especially
when folks abuse the priviledge. But I don't think this is the case
here and there seems to be widespread interest in the topic, as it's
a situation faced by every JAWS user sooner or later.

Or so it seems to me.

from the JAWS 13 public beta page

Customizing the OCR Voice

To customize the voice you hear when reading recognized text, do the
following:
1.Press INSERT+F2, and select Settings Center. When Settings Center opens,
press CTRL+SHIFT+D to open Default.
2.In the tree view, navigate to and expand Voice Aliases, then select
Customize Voice Aliases.
3.Press F6 to move to the Voice Aliases page, and choose the Voice Aliases
button to open the dialog box.
4.Select OCRVoice from the list of voice aliasses and choose the Modify
button to customize the settings for this alias.

Subject: annoying voice with OCR feature

Whenever I try to use the OCR feature in the JFW 13 beta, when the JAWS
cursor is activated it speaks in this voice that is really hard to
understand. I have gone in and looked at all my voice profiles and all are
set to use Reed as the default. Any way I can fix this, and does anyone have
any tips on making good use of the OCR feature? Was hoping the beta had
fixed the problem I was having with flash content as well, but that hasn't
happened as of yet either.

Very interesting. How well are you able to use quicken with JAWS?

yes you can change the voice, but off the top of my head i can not remember
just how. if you listen to eric's podcast about it he tells you in there
how to change the voice. i am sending a report to have them make the defalt
for the o c r part different then the one they have it is really hard to
understand. i think it should be a higher pitch not that low one they have.
