I am having trouble setting up my Plextalk. I am not sure what is wrong. Can someone write me off list with some tips?

Hi, to read the training you do have to use the jaws cursor I seem to recall. I didn't have any problems with the registration but I can't remember what was involved. JAWS won't read back commands as you make them or read text without you first selecting the text using dragon. It works great once you get used to it.

Major issue with dragon and JAWs. Can't read training dragon, Can't
find any setings, can't regester product as it says something about

when I used J_Say, which is the only reason I have the Professional
version.
Of course, I'm not using J_Say any more.
Please check first, but I think that if you get the Preferred, you will
get to use what you paid as an upgrade to the Professional version.
Plus, once you are on the Nuance mailing list, you get contacted for
"special" deals, and I've known people who upgraded for a fraction of
the
cost using a Nuance "special offer."

Assuming you are installing this on your own machine and do not have to
worry about an information technology department's oppressive security
settings, everything should be pretty straightforward.
Sighted assistance is not necessary; however, it could be a comfort.
You
will be asked to identify your sound system. Dragon will help, but you
should know something about your system.
Peter seems to have had good luck with the built in sound facility on
his
laptop. I have never been able to get a built-in sound system on a
laptop
to work; however, I have used nothing but ThinkPad laptops for the past
15
years. They are good machines, but this is not my choice.
Be sure to position the headset microphone properly. It should be in
front of your mouth and about one inch away. A little variation
doesn't
matter, but if you have a swivel boom and the microphone is on top of
your
head, the results will be disastrous.
You will be asked to check the volume of your sound system. In that
step
of the installation, it really does not matter what you say. You can
recite a nursery rhyme.
In the next step in the installation, the sound systems quality is
checked. There, it is probably better to read what is on the screen.
For
this, you will need to use the JAWS cursor. The text is only about two
sentences. So, this is not a big deal.
By far, the most important thing to remember is to go through the
settings. You need to be sure that Dragon Naturally Speaking is

out of the system tray.

can simply say "choose one" or "choose three" or whatever the item you
want to select is listed as.

names,
Dragon probably won't be able to suggest anything helpful. Then, when

Dragon will remember your word, even if it is a really strange one.

So, Just got Dragon for my birthday, Love my mom, and I'm geting it
out of the box. Just 2 questions. 1, do I need sighted help to instal

1, go to the setting center.

2, you may want to press default, ctrl+shift+d,
Or, maybe, you want to change a setting to program specific, then open the
application you want to change, and press insert+#row6

While in the settings center, arrow to sound schemes,
Right arrow to open, and down arrow and press spacebar on modify
scheme...button.
Now, the default is classic,
So arrow down to the scheme of choice,
Now tab and press enter or the spacebar on edit selected scheme button,
Now make your changes.

Press F6 when on the tree. This takes you to the configuration pane, where
you interact with a combo box. In the configuration pane, press tab to see
a description of each scheme.

This message is being dictated using Dragon Naturally Speaking. I
promised
everyone that I would post a message as soon as I had fully installed
Dragon
Naturally Speaking.
I did absolutely no training. This is version 11.5, and I am amazed
with
its accuracy. In fact, I am dictating this e-mail message using
Naturally
Speaking.
Here are some tips:
first, if you are using a laptop, your built in sound card is probably
an
adequate. I would encourage you to use a USB sound card.
Second, in order to keep the Dragon Toolbar out of the way, under
"options,"
be sure to put Naturally Speaking in the system tray.
Third, under Options, be sure to go to the hotkeys tab. There, create
a
set
of hotkeys that makes sense to you.
For those of you who are looking for a dictation solution, I highly
recommend Dragon Naturally Speaking.

version.
Of course, I'm not using J_Say any more.
Please check first, but I think that if you get the Preferred, you will
get to use what you paid as an upgrade to the Professional version.
Plus, once you are on the Nuance mailing list, you get contacted for
"special" deals, and I've known people who upgraded for a fraction of the
cost using a Nuance "special offer."

Assuming you are installing this on your own machine and do not have to
worry about an information technology department's oppressive security
settings, everything should be pretty straightforward.
Sighted assistance is not necessary; however, it could be a comfort.
You
will be asked to identify your sound system. Dragon will help, but you
should know something about your system.
Peter seems to have had good luck with the built in sound facility on
his
laptop. I have never been able to get a built-in sound system on a
laptop
to work; however, I have used nothing but ThinkPad laptops for the past
15
years. They are good machines, but this is not my choice.
Be sure to position the headset microphone properly. It should be in
front of your mouth and about one inch away. A little variation doesn't
matter, but if you have a swivel boom and the microphone is on top of
your
head, the results will be disastrous.
You will be asked to check the volume of your sound system. In that
step
of the installation, it really does not matter what you say. You can
recite a nursery rhyme.
In the next step in the installation, the sound systems quality is
checked. There, it is probably better to read what is on the screen.
For
this, you will need to use the JAWS cursor. The text is only about two
sentences. So, this is not a big deal.
By far, the most important thing to remember is to go through the
settings. You need to be sure that Dragon Naturally Speaking is running
out of the system tray.
Most of the other settings are a matter of personal preference, and for
many, the default settings work fine.
There is an option to turn on screen reader menus. Be sure that option
is
checked.
There is also a section to assign hotkeys. I do not particularly like
the
default hotkeys. I rarely use the "wake-up" and "go to sleep" commands.
I usually turn the microphone on and off with a hotkey, in my case,
shift
plus F-11.
Where you encounter words that Dragon does not understand, be sure to
highlight the word or phrase. Then, say "correct that." This should
open
up a dialogue box. The first item in the dialog box is an edit box.
There, you can type in the correct spelling of the word that Dragon
messed
up. If you hit tab on the edit box, you will be presented with a list
of
choices. You can arrow down to the proper choice and hit enter, or you
can simply say "choose one" or "choose three" or whatever the item you
want to select is listed as.
I like to use the list when it works; however, for strange proper names,
Dragon probably won't be able to suggest anything helpful. Then, when
you
type in the word, you can either just press enter or preferably, you
should tab over to training. To start training, say the word, and then
press on the "done" button.
Dragon will remember your word, even if it is a really strange one.
Remember, you can get help. Probably the easiest to remember is, "what
can I say." I think you can also say "show me a list of commands" or
"show me help."
Use the Jaws task switching key, shift plus F-10. The Dragon Side-Bar
will show up. You can also just say "Dragon Side Bar," and that will
bring it up. I know because while I was dictating it just now, I
triggered the Dragon Side Bar.
The help facility is a kind of HTML display, and it works very well with
Jaws.
I am sure others will have additional tips, but this should get you
started.

This message is being dictated using Dragon Naturally Speaking. I
promised
everyone that I would post a message as soon as I had fully installed
Dragon
Naturally Speaking.
I did absolutely no training. This is version 11.5, and I am amazed
with
its accuracy. In fact, I am dictating this e-mail message using
Naturally
Speaking.
Here are some tips:
first, if you are using a laptop, your built in sound card is probably
an
adequate. I would encourage you to use a USB sound card.
Second, in order to keep the Dragon Toolbar out of the way, under
"options,"
be sure to put Naturally Speaking in the system tray.
Third, under Options, be sure to go to the hotkeys tab. There, create
a
set
of hotkeys that makes sense to you.
For those of you who are looking for a dictation solution, I highly
recommend Dragon Naturally Speaking.
Just so you know, I made absolutely no edits to this e-mail message.

when I used J_Say, which is the only reason I have the Professional
version.
Of course, I'm not using J_Say any more.
Please check first, but I think that if you get the Preferred, you will
get to use what you paid as an upgrade to the Professional version.
Plus, once you are on the Nuance mailing list, you get contacted for
"special" deals, and I've known people who upgraded for a fraction of the
cost using a Nuance "special offer."

Assuming you are installing this on your own machine and do not have to
worry about an information technology department's oppressive security
settings, everything should be pretty straightforward.
Sighted assistance is not necessary; however, it could be a comfort. You
will be asked to identify your sound system. Dragon will help, but you
should know something about your system.
Peter seems to have had good luck with the built in sound facility on his
laptop. I have never been able to get a built-in sound system on a
laptop
to work; however, I have used nothing but ThinkPad laptops for the past
15
years. They are good machines, but this is not my choice.
Be sure to position the headset microphone properly. It should be in
front of your mouth and about one inch away. A little variation doesn't
matter, but if you have a swivel boom and the microphone is on top of
your
head, the results will be disastrous.
You will be asked to check the volume of your sound system. In that step
of the installation, it really does not matter what you say. You can
recite a nursery rhyme.
In the next step in the installation, the sound systems quality is
checked. There, it is probably better to read what is on the screen.
For
this, you will need to use the JAWS cursor. The text is only about two
sentences. So, this is not a big deal.
By far, the most important thing to remember is to go through the
settings. You need to be sure that Dragon Naturally Speaking is running
out of the system tray.
Most of the other settings are a matter of personal preference, and for
many, the default settings work fine.
There is an option to turn on screen reader menus. Be sure that option
is
checked.
There is also a section to assign hotkeys. I do not particularly like
the
default hotkeys. I rarely use the "wake-up" and "go to sleep" commands.
I usually turn the microphone on and off with a hotkey, in my case, shift
plus F-11.
Where you encounter words that Dragon does not understand, be sure to
highlight the word or phrase. Then, say "correct that." This should
open
up a dialogue box. The first item in the dialog box is an edit box.
There, you can type in the correct spelling of the word that Dragon
messed
up. If you hit tab on the edit box, you will be presented with a list of
choices. You can arrow down to the proper choice and hit enter, or you
can simply say "choose one" or "choose three" or whatever the item you
want to select is listed as.
I like to use the list when it works; however, for strange proper names,
Dragon probably won't be able to suggest anything helpful. Then, when
you
type in the word, you can either just press enter or preferably, you
should tab over to training. To start training, say the word, and then
press on the "done" button.
Dragon will remember your word, even if it is a really strange one.
Remember, you can get help. Probably the easiest to remember is, "what
can I say." I think you can also say "show me a list of commands" or
"show me help."
Use the Jaws task switching key, shift plus F-10. The Dragon Side-Bar
will show up. You can also just say "Dragon Side Bar," and that will
bring it up. I know because while I was dictating it just now, I
triggered the Dragon Side Bar.
The help facility is a kind of HTML display, and it works very well with
Jaws.
I am sure others will have additional tips, but this should get you
started.

Assuming you are installing this on your own machine and do not have to
worry about an information technology department's oppressive security
settings, everything should be pretty straightforward.
Sighted assistance is not necessary; however, it could be a comfort. You
will be asked to identify your sound system. Dragon will help, but you
should know something about your system.
Peter seems to have had good luck with the built in sound facility on his
laptop. I have never been able to get a built-in sound system on a laptop
to work; however, I have used nothing but ThinkPad laptops for the past 15
years. They are good machines, but this is not my choice.
Be sure to position the headset microphone properly. It should be in
front of your mouth and about one inch away. A little variation doesn't
matter, but if you have a swivel boom and the microphone is on top of your
head, the results will be disastrous.
You will be asked to check the volume of your sound system. In that step
of the installation, it really does not matter what you say. You can
recite a nursery rhyme.
In the next step in the installation, the sound systems quality is
checked. There, it is probably better to read what is on the screen. For

By far, the most important thing to remember is to go through the
settings. You need to be sure that Dragon Naturally Speaking is running
out of the system tray.
Most of the other settings are a matter of personal preference, and for

Ah, that may explain why I can open the .doc files with Jart. I was going to tell you I hadn't had a problem, then I read the article.

It's a little conversion file that you install and forget about. I can send it to you if you like.

Update (Aug 8, 2011): A recent Windows update has disabled Jarte's ability to use the graphics filters in the Office Converter Pack. Therefore, Jarte can
no longer display non-bitmap images in Word 97-2003 binary DOC files. The word around is to use Microsoft's free
Word Viewer
program to open those files.

Jarte can open Word 97-2003 DOC files created by the Word word processor if Microsoft's Office Converter Pack is installed on the computer.

The Office Converter Pack is no longer available at Microsoft's web site, however it can still be downloaded from CNET's Download.com web site using the
link below. Close and restart Jarte after you have installed the Office Converter Pack and Jarte will then be able to open Word 97-2003 DOC files.

I could not get it to open a .doc document. It said to open Windows
2003.doc files, I would need the Microsoft Office Pack. I followed the
link. When I tried to install it, I was told that I already had it. To put
this one on, I would have to install the one I have with add/remove
programs. I didn't go any further.

An alternative to using an unfamiliar word processing program might be to
change all the file extensions with a single command. In DOS, it was
possible to change all filenames by typing

Ren [old filename] [new filename]

With this command, you could assign *.doc to include all filenames with that
extension and *.rtf to replace them all with just one operation.

Does anyone know if this command works in the "Run" command window?
