Let me emphasize what Ann said here. While JAWS 13 can sort of perform OCR
on graphical pdf documents, I've never been able to get it to work, and if
the document is of any size or seriousness, the feature really isn't
designed for it. On the other hand, using the web interface at
robobraille.org, you get a quick e-mail of the file in your preferred
format, including braille and a lot of others. The quality of the OCR is
good.

Personalised web settings not working on latest build

Hi, is anybody finding that when using the JAWS 13 latest build that the shortcut key INSERT SHIFT V does not work to bring up the personalised web settings dialogue. Also any persnalised settings already set on a site don't seem to be taken in to consideration. I've got a page which auto refreshes and no matter what I do I can't stop it using the document refresh setting even though I've previously set it not to auto refresh.

You will need to use some sort of OCR to render it to text. This is no
different from JAWS.

Jaws 12 & Word 03

Jaws won't talk when I go to the format menu for instance in Word and choose font. It says "edit combo" but won't tell me my choices when I use the arrow keys; the same for font style, size. Help!

flaky, requiring one or two repair attempts. Maybe I'll wait a day or

Yes, I used the 32 bit version. This happened to me once before with one
of
the 12 or maybe 13 releases, I can't remember right now. I even
downloaded
the .exe file a second time to be sure it wasn't my first download. In
both
instances, I got stuck on the "please wait while Jaws updates your
system"
or something page and get the endless cherps. It will get stuck at the
96%
level.

Both times this has happened, I've been able to restart my computer with
no
issues and when I check the about option in the Jaws menu, it will show
the
updated version, but I'll notice weird behavior with certain commands
and
whatnot. This time though, if I unloaded Jaws using the insert+f4
command
and try to reload it, Jaws would not come up. Thankfully I still have
JFW 11
on my system so I just went ahead and used that to the uninstall process
for
13 and did the reinstall with the executable file.

The update always goes through fine after I do the initial uninstall and
reinstallation.

Just one of those things I suppose.

Interesting you point out the install problem. I downloaded the update
(as I

do each time) and had to install twice before it came up. Then just to
be
safe I did a repair. I noticed that during the first two installs the
default "valium voice" was not there, but in the repair it finally came
on
board.

Not the usual seamless install of an upgrade, and perhaps the executable

posted to the web is somewhat corrupted.

I used the 32-bit version. Did you?

I removed JAWS 13.0.638 a(using restore) and am back to using JAWS
13.0.527.

My bad experience was with a web site where I had the "Remember me on

computer" feature enabled at the logon. Normally I hear my user name in

edit field when opening such web pages.

With this last update of JAWS (and with no other versions before) I
heard a
reading of the lines of one of the underlying script files read on and

and on. The username was actually there, but JAWS was off reading

completely wrong. The offending text string was no where on the screen

was just being fed into the synthesizer.

Anyone else seen this behavior? If so please report to FS.

Hi Mike,

When you're in the message list, check to see what JAWS says your screen
colors are. You do this by pressing insert + 5 on the numbers row at the
top of your keyboard. Then, let's see if that's really correct. Have Kim
look at your screen and tell you what the colors really are. That might
help someone on the list solve this problem for us.

Cy, I had good reason to be skeptical, but this version is a winner. I
am having certain problems at the office, compounded by the fact that it
may be hard for our software developers to work with Freedom Scientific,
but these are apps from Hell anyway under the best of circumstances.
It's worth the ride this time--even Access works again. Talk about a
long beta cycle!

Everyone is a beta tester for at least the first 3 months of a new
release.

Okay, I'm cynical. Actually the new version does pre-release about a
month
in advance and everyone is welcome to download and report bugs. However
given the short time I really don't think those bug reports ever make it
to
the first release. I suspect that these bugs get fixed in the succeeding

monthly updates. Okay, cynical again, but not quite so much, eh?

Other than that if you want to be a Beta tester for real, you need to
contact FS directly and let them know you're interested. Then be
prepared to

devote a lot of time to wringing out as many quirks as possible, with as

many applications as possible, in as many operating environments as
possible

during the testing cycles, and report every single thing you find that
either works or does not work.

If I ever retire and have nothing to do, I'll volunteer.

stay away from Adobe Acrobat by converting PDF files to TXT or word.

I do too, but some pdf files have the convert to text option disabled
and then you're stuck using adobe.

Recently I've seen a strange behavior in acrobat. When I'm reading an
ebook with the read visible pages option invoked, when I page forward
my cursor is positioned at the bottom of the page rather than at the
top. It's very annoying as I then have to arrow up the page before I
can continue reading.

Has anyone else seen this?

How well does X do with long documents? The performance of 7,8, and 9
has been truly awful, forcing the user to choose between either
continually paging down or dealing with a balky, slow, crash-prone
application (I haven't compared notes with sighted users on this issue).
I've been using that little reader that came with Thunder; it lacks
fancy features, but is rock steady.

Now when I load a document, I can't read anything.

When I do a down arrow it just says blank.

It is not an OCR thing since I could read the same document with

Any ideas if there are particular settings under preferences that I

to set in order for me to be able to read .PDF documents?

I am using Jaws 12.1169.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am using JAWS version 13.0.527, the update released prior to the one that
came out earlier this week, and Outlook 2003. I go to attachments with
insert-a and am experiencing no new difficulties locating all items there.

I've had to switch back to JAWS 12, temporarily, I hope.
For those of you using Outlook 2003, you know there are two ways (at least)
of accessing email attachments:
1. From the Inbox listing, one can right-click, press shift plus F-10, or
press the Applications key to produce a list of choices. One has a submenu
called "View attachments."
In JAWS 12, I can see 13 attachments to this particular message I have.
Only one attachment shows up in JAWS 13. This is a huge problem.
2. When in the message, by pressing control plus shift plus o, one can
change the format to plain text. This puts all the attachments up in an
attachment box. In JAWS 13, when I arrow along in that box, all I hear is
semicolon. In JAWS 12, the attachment is identified, the file attachment
name, and the size are stated.
If this has been mentioned before, I apologize. I've only been distractedly
following the list of late. I'd like to know if this has been reported as a
nasty bug. We should be moving to Office 10 soon. So, perhaps this is only
a matter of historical significance.
Nevertheless, for the present, in this regard, JAWS 13 is definitely a step
backwards. This makes JAWS 13 a non-starter for me. Wonder if I can get my
wasted SMA back and wait for JAWS 14? I think it will likely snow in Hades
first. <SMILE>

Hi,

Well, it's like the previous versions; slow and crash-prone. The only difference is the user interface which has been distorted. I think the slowness issue is related to combination of JAWS with it. I always prefer to stay away from Adobe Acrobat by converting PDF files to TXT or word.
