moderated Can JAWS Tell You when a Facebook Event Goes Live?

Rick Miller

Dear Listers:

Every Wednesday morning a pastor has a short devotion on Facebook.  I can tell when I go to the church’s web site that the event is scheduled to begin at a certain time, but I can never tell when it is happening live and can only assume it is happening, and for that reason I miss part of it live.   I am using JAWS 2021 and Windows 10.  Have any of you been able to tell the moment when a scheduled Facebook event goes live?  If so, how?

Here is the direct email address of the person I dealt with. ryan@canasstech.com There is another agency however, they seemed to be licking their chops at the thought of taking my money. In other words, they may sell you something you don't need. Also, Ryan will make sure you don't get charged taxes if you can provide him with your CNIB #. Going directly through FS, 1. You might be sent to the Canadian distributer who was licking their chops & 2. You could be given the cost in U S funds. Which could be a lot more expensive.

can go direct through FS.

Hi Bill,
Thanks for this, I didn't know that's how you're supposed to navigate the
folder. Wish I'd known that before! Thanks again!

Hi, Sieghard. Even if Madison is using Windows 10, one thing he/she may not know
is that in the Apps Folder (accessed through shell:AppsFolder), one does not use
the up and down arrows to navigate through the files. The files are laid out
horizontally, and navigation is accomplished by using the left and right arrows.
Because of this, the JAWS application could have been missed, if the up and down
arrows were being used as the method of navigation in the Apps Folder.

No offense, but maybe you are not doing something the way it is explained.
If you have Jaws installed on your computer and are using Windows 10 the
Shell:AppsFolder command will definitely show you a list which contains Jaws.
Are you using Windows 10 or Windows 7? Don't think you said and I don't recall
if anybody asked.

Hey there, Madison, BZ here again, grin! There's another way to do this in
windows ten. 1. Hit windows key plus r which will bring up the run dialog.
2. Type shell:appsfolder and then press enter. This will bring up a list of
all your applications. Down arrow until you hear jaws and then hit your
applications key and go down until you hear create shortcut and then press
enter. You'll get a message that will say something like do you want windows to
create a shortcut anyway and then press enter. I'm doing the message off the
top of my head so that's not the verbatim message you'll hear but this method
will create the jaws item on your desktop. If you're not comfortable doing this
and you need assistance, just let me know and I'll be happy to help you. BZ!

Hi all,
I went to my desktop and the Jaws shortcut doesn't seem to be on there. I went
into the search box and found Jaws, but when I pressed shift f10 to create a
shortcut I got 5 options:
Run as administrator
Open file location
Unpin from taskbar
Pin to start
Uninstall

Can someone please tell me, what other way (s) can I create a shortcut for Jaws
on my desktop? Even though you've all provided me with other ways to start Jaws,
I'd still like to check and see if my shortcut key is still set or not. Thanks
Madison

Forgot to mention that if you need to tweak the indent By amount ALT+Y throws focus directly there.

For any version of MS-Word from 2010 and later, this would likely be the easiest method:

1. Do a Select All (CTRL+A) if you want the indent to apply to all paragraphs, or select the range of text where you want the first line indents to be applied.
2. ALT+H,PG [Home Ribbon, open Paragraph Dialog].
3. ALT+S, throw focus to the Special dropdown in the indentation section, select First Line from the dropdown.
4. The "By" edit box will automatically be prepopulated with 0.5 inches.  If that's fine, jump to step 5, otherwise, edit the box to adjust the indent depth to what you want.
5. Activate the OK button on the Paragraph dialog.

All of your first lines on all paragraphs will now be indented by the amount specified.

Tom, this isn't something I've encountered and I'm a regular user of Brave.
What voice are you using? If Eloquence, are you using the Reed voice or one of the other variations?
What parameters are you using, as in the settings for pitch and rate?
Is this behavior consistent? In other words, if you perform a "say all" three times on the same page will it exhibit the same behavior on the same text all three times?
Can you provide a specific URL where you notice this behavior and specific text areas where the voice changes?
With this information we can try to see if we can reproduce the issue.
By chance I'm wondering if the "indicate capitalization" option in Settings Center got changed. To verify this,
1: Ensure that Brave is open and that it is the active window.
2. Press insert-6 (on the numbers row) to open Settings Center.
3. Type "cap" without the quotes.
4. Arrow down to the "indicate capitalization" setting and ensure that it is set for "char (meaning character.)

When I renewed my SMA to get JAWS 21, earlier this month, it cost me $165 for the home edition for 2 years, I believe. It said I have 4 activations. OH, yes, living in Canada if I can provide my CNIB (Canadian National Institute for the Blind) #, it makes the purchase tax exempt. Which means no taxes, either 12 or 6% on the $165.

With the quality of the free NVDA screen reader being so good I can't
imagine anyone paying $1000 for Jaws.

I don't disagree that NVDA has now become a very high quality and capable screen reader. However, consumers in the U.S. who need a home license can purchase the home annual license for $90 a year. Also, JAWS possesses many features and capabilities which are not currently offered by NVDA, not to mention many different ways of configuring the screen reader not found in NVDA.

No, it's obvious what FS is trying to do.  They are deliberately making a two-upgrade SMA more expensive for $210 than a two-year license for $180,because they want to gradually migrate all JAWS customers to the licensing arrangement and eliminate the SMA arrangement altogether. Now that JAWS has reached a plateau and few new features can be expected in the future, many JAWS users may simply decide to let their SMA's lapse. But by gradually switching them to the licensing arrangement, JAWS users will have to renew their licenses annually which would be more profitable for FS in the long run.

Hello, I’m using Jaws2020 and word 2016. I need to setup the entire file to indent the first line of each paragraph on its own. I went through the layout tab. I couldn’t find anything that would let me set the file to do it. Are there a string keys I can turn this on?

Thanks,

Jasmine,

Help text is not printed because it is not visible.  As you know, you add it as part of a control, usually along with alt-text, but that only causes the screen reader to announce the alt-text when you land in the control, or if you hit F1 when sitting in a control.  For the sighted, the help text is also shown in the Word "window frame" at the bottom left side or, if they hit F1, as a pop-up.

If you actually want what you have as help text for a given form control printed, then you need to add that as visible text to the form itself, usually delimiting it in a smaller point size, using a different color/font/etc., from the main form labels (which, by the way, generally correspond to the alt-text that is announced when you land in a control), and the actual font/point size used in the controls themselves.

Jasmine,

If you are keeping an external mouse connected, I would suggest using the setting that allows you to disable the internal pointing device (the mousepad) when an external USB pointing device is attached.  Exactly where that is located under the Control Panel, Mouse pane depends on the exact brand of internal mouse is used on your laptop and how the dialog that comes up presents it.

Cynthia,

Definitely tell them that using Legacy Form Fields would be a big improvement from an accessibility angle.  Also, if blind students are expected to fill in this form independently, all of those tables that don't have legacy form controls (most likely text form fields) should have one created in each cell, with appropriate alt-text and help-text, so that they can be navigated and filled out with ease.

Here are three examples of MS-Fillable Forms, with editing restricted to filling out fields only, that I have created for prior clients (the Bus Note was actually used in the school office, while the client intake was a "proof of concept" that never made it to completion because the person for whom it was being created dropped out of school).  The one for reporting an NVDA Bug was created to make it far easier for someone who cannot see to fill out the required bug report format without accidentally deleting some of the text markers that the developers use to quickly navigate the final bug report.

BusNoteForm.dotx

New_Client_Intake_Form.dotx

NVDA_Github_Issue_Template.dotx

All three, if saved somewhere and double clicked, will open a blank version of the form with the form fields fillable/checkable as needed.  Because of how MS-Word handles text fields, you will not hear what you've typed in announced by the screen reader until you tab out of the form field and then shift+tab back in.  So, to review a form I generally suggest either doing it as soon as you finish with a text field, by shift-tabbing back in, or by filling out the whole form and then just quickly revisiting all the text fields afterward, as you will now hear whatever you do have in them when you initially land in them.
