In addition to OCR, you might want to see if the JAWS Graphics labeler can help you give names to those "missing" buttons. Position the JAWS cursor on one of the buttons and press Insert+G to see what happens. Then there's the auto-graphic labeler, Insert+Ctrl+G. That might also yield some results. Yesterday Dave Carlson suggested that someone with a similar concern about an unrelated application look into JAWS 13's OCR function. I have yet to try it, but it might be worth your while to test it on this program. If you can't solve the problem, there'd be no harm in keeping an earlier version of JAWS on your system just for this purpose.

Unfortunately SPSS does not work well with Jaws at all. I've taken three stats related courses over the last three semesters and was not able to use SPSS myself. You have a couple other options, as excel has a data package that your school can get so you can use excel to do all the work in your class. It's not the best solution as excel is not as powerful as SPSS, and you have to do much of the work manually. Another option, this is the one I use in my classes, is to ask your professor if it would be possible to do the spss part of the course with a partner. This way you could learn the basic workings and commands for spss and work with your partner to enter the data, but not be responsible for actually using it yourself. I hope this helps, and let me know if you have any more questions. Drew

Asunto: RE: [Bulk] How to simulate Shift+left mouse click? Gerardo, JAWS simulates the left mouse click with the slash key on the numpad. So as Dave suggests, you may be able to achieve the result you want by pressing this key along with the shift key. However, I just went into JAWS key identifier mode and tried this key combination. JAWS says it enables "selecting items contiguously." So if you try it, you'll need to listen to what JAWS verbalizes. If shift+numpaid slash doesn't work as you need, try one of the following long shots: 1. First press JAWS key+3 on the number row above the letters. This is the pass-through key that tells JAWS to treat the next keystroke not as a JAWS function, but as whatever function that keystroke has in the application. Then press shift+numpad slash and see what happens. 2. As an even more farfetched option, try shift+JAWS key+numpaid slash. I doubt it will work, but I don't think it could do any harm. -----Original Message----- From: jfw-bounces@lists.the-jdh.com [mailto:jfw-bounces@lists.the-jdh.com] On Behalf Of Farfar on Laptop Sent: Friday, December 09, 2011 1:14 AM To: The Jaws for Windows support list. Re: [Bulk] an odd problem, I hope someone may help to solve.: no sound fromJAWSafterunpluggingfrom headphone jack

My problem seems to have been resolved.

Dave, your notion that the headphones were being considered as default for JAWS I guess must have been correct. Though I scarcely understand how that came to be the case. My problem, to reiterate, was that when I would unplug my headphones from the headphone jack, JAWS would no longer make any sound, but other sounds would still work fine, like the media player, and Windows sounds. Plug in the headphones, and JAWS was speaking again. Rebooting, closing and re-launching JAWS would all stay with this behavior. And since I still have JAWS 12 on my machine, I tried it, and it was the same thing. Finally, then, to discover that Microsoft Narrator was also doing this, alerted us to the idea it was related to the text to speech engine. And Dave said go to the sound card settings. Here is what I was able to do. Using my JAWS with the headphones on, I went into the properties of my sound card. I looked all around. I ran tests on test buttons. Could not find anything. And then I found a button that said, "Restore Defaults." I was a scared. But I did it. And of course, my fears were realized when JAWS quit talking. But, keeping my cool, I closed JAWS, and then relaunched the program. Soon enough I hear, "JAWS is ready." Yay!! So then I take the next step to test it. And sure enough, when I unplugged the headphones, now JAWS is speaking again from the speakers and the headphones both. So thank you! Hopefully I may keep things running smoothly again. Richard

You may need to look at your audio devices in the Control Panel to see What sound devices are there, in addition to the headset. Then make sure that all are enabled. Sounds like JAWS is not aware of any sound card aside from the headset, and it needs to be told that there is an internal sound chip that it can use. I'm afraid I have to report it was no dice with that solution. Under my Sound Card options in the JAWS Utilities, there is no listing for Headphones. The Windows Sound Default is checked already. Other ideas? As it happens, I just got finished with an extended session with Freedom Scientific tech support. The result was that no one could figure it out. They used a Tandem JAWS session with me. The tech conferred with several others while with me. They tried several things, exploring and changing many of the settings in my pc's sound settings, to no avail. We even closed JAWS 13 and launched version 12, to find exactly the similar behavior. We used other voice profiles, SAPI and realspeak. Same thing. There is sound from JAWS only when the headphone jack is plugged in. Other sound devices work fine from speakers connected to the audio jack on back of my pc. Finally I have just plugged my speakers into the headphone jack. They are very little speakers, not big ones. but at least I can use JAWS and not be tethered by the headphones. We then even tried this. We launched Microsoft Narrator. And guess what? The behavior is the same. It only speaks with the headphone jack engaged. So from this, the FS conclusion or hypothesis was that perhaps something weird has happened to my sound card, as it relates to the performance of the text to speech engine. I do not have any particular technical skill to tackle this, as far as what to try next. I don't expect my tech support session with Dell, will be completely easy. But I guess that is what is needed at this point. And I will have to do it another time. Lots to do, already a bit late from this unanticipated tech glitch. Thanks very much for any and all thoughts and suggestions. Richard -----Original Message----- From: Farfar on Laptop Sent: Friday, December 09, 2011 10:19 AM To: The Jaws for Windows support list. Subject: Re: an odd problem,I hope someone may help to solve.: no sound from JAWS afterunpluggingfrom headphone jack Sure. You've got JAWS exclusively pointing to that headphone jack as its only allowed device. When you disconnect, you lose JAWS. First, while the headphone jack is connected (so you can hear): Go to the JAWS application with Insert+J Utilities menu Sound Card Submenu Arrow through the list (usually at least two) Select Windows default instead of your headphones that should fix it. I have this issue which I do not have a clue how to resolve. I have no sound coming from JAWS 13 after unplugging from my Dell XPS 8300 Windows Home Premium's headphone jack. When I check for other sound, yes, the media player plays music, etc. But JAWS is absolutley silent until I again plug into the headphone jack. I have rebooted my machine, with the same issue. When plugging back into the headphone jack, JAWS speaks up saying the regular, "You have plugged a device into the audio jack." And when I unplug the headphones, the tool tip says the opposite, but JAWS is silent for that, or any other screen reading function until plugging back into the audio headphone jack. I hope someone may help with a possible solution. I have not made any changes in my JAWS settings, nor in my computer's sound settings. One thing I looked at was that under Utilities in JAWS, under Sound Card it says I am using Windows default sound card. Thanks for any suggestions.
