Re: Citation managers that are accessible with JAWS

Hello,
There is no citation manager that works well with Jaws.
There is no citation manager that is easy for the blind person to use.
The best thing I've herd of is the citing capabilities of word 2010.
Sorry, but what I do is just give the info required in the works cited page and just tell my instructors that there is nothing out there to help me, as a blind person, make a works cited page.
Thanks,

Hello Chris,

I personally am not sure about what a citation manager is exactly. I was at
school yesterday asking a question about APA format, because, like you, I
usually just type it into my essays. This guy said that he used something
called a citation manager that helped him set up the citation, and then he
goes along and edits it. I thought it would be worth a try, but didn't want
to spend the money if it was not accessible so I decided to ask here. I have
an electronic version (Word) of the APA manual, which is what I use along
with an online resource called the Purdue OWL, which is the online writing
lab at Purdue University. I also use the writing lab at my school.

Sorry but what's a citation manager?
I used to just type that stuff into my essay in Microsoft Word, or
well, back then it was WordPerfect for Dos.

They have programs to partially automate the process now? that's neat.

Chris
P.S. Is the APA available as a print handbook you could scan? When
I was an English student, they insisted we use the MLA (modern
language asociation) guidelines. They were online, but they were
also available in book form.

Hi Alicia. What are you taking? just curious.
Anyway, I wish I had some useful info for you. A program that automates the citing process would be handy. Hopefully someone else will speak up here.

Maybe K1000, Openbook and the other OCR program manufacturers could build a feature that generated most of the citation and bibliographic info automatically.

Many thanks it is a dell inspire windows 7 64 bit and it did have a Hd
failure after 10 months but the engineer a local man went over it all not
long ago, it has a Net gear router, and he replaced 1 wire the Phone wire,
regarding mother board, I think it is Ok, It is just one of those odd
things that happens I think. The xp laptop goes via a wireless connection
and both have jaws 12 on them and the person I emailed said it was not due
to dell being wary of new battery "just turn it off and reload" and it has
been ok since, computers just get things wrong at times. Regarding the fact
that jaws reads things wrongly, if set to white texton black, that is a
laptop problem the problem of white font on black background is a real
one,but on windows 7, is less of an issue. On laptop I used lunar for a
while to use in inverse mode, but I have removed it now, as the xp laptop is
old and doesnot have a lotof resources I just put up with the screen. That
problem was never solved by fs by the way.Magic was no good,Lunar a dolphin
product was. I see I have referred to 2 issues in one reply, sorry if it is
confusing! Dorothy .

Do you use a USB hub? If so it could be going bad. If not maybe the USB
controller on your mother board is causing the problem, or there is a
problem with the drivers. May have to remove the USB ports from device

Alicia M. Starner <astarner@...>

Hello Everyone,

I am a college student who struggles with electronic versions of the APA
documentation manual and wonder if there is a citation manager that will
help me with citation building that is accessible with JAWS. Does anyone
know if there is a citation builder that works well with JAWS out of the box
or would work with some minor tweeking?

Thanks,

Text Tally Vs. TextPal

Hello. I'm not familiar with Text Tally, but if a person is looking for
TextPal, the text editor written by Jamal Mazrui, it is available here:

It has not been updated. EdSharp has pretty much replaced it and has been
fairly well updated.

Tom, I have no experience with PowerPoint, but can't you copy the RTF
text,
whether directly or after going into virtual window mode with JAWS
key-alt-w? Then you could eliminate the "heading" verbalization.

As for finding Jamal's Text Pal, there's always google.

I tried the RTF option yesterday, and, although the text was there and in

the beginning of just about every line, which made reading and
understanding
the text very difficult.

If you open the powerpoint and then go to the save dialog box, tab to the
type/format box and arrow down you should be able to save it as an RTF
doc
which will give you all the text from all the slides in the right order.
Before I discovered this I used to have to copy and paste the text out of
the slides, but this is much quicker. I use 2007 so if that is what you
have
it definitely works.

Subject: JAWS automatically telling time

Hi all,
Somehow JAWS suddenly started telling me the time every minute. I don't have
time to run through the settings, does anyone have any suggestions on how to
shut this thing up?
I'm busy on the next project and deep into code so no time to play around.

Thank you in advance.
John Martyn

Question on installing newer versions of Jaws and the Real Speak voices

Cristóbal

Hello list,

I’ve noticed that whenever I install a new version of Jaws, the Real Speak
voices I had installed on the earlier version of JFW don’t’ show up in the
newer version. I don’t mean the periodical updates FS puts out, but rather
the 11 to 12 and now 12 to 13. I know now that the version 13 beta doesn’t
have the merge utility, but even when upgrading in the past, Real Speak
still wolnd’t show up. I’ve got a few self-created voice profiles in
different languages and whatnot for proof reading documents with the Real
Speak voices.

I have the .exe files on my hard drive, but I was just wondering if others
experience this as well or if it was just something that I may have been
doing wrong on my end. I don’t even know if it’s a bug per say, but rather
one of those things.

turning it off seemed to work, today a visitor came and i put on dell in
morning this time jaws said nothing adverse but the sighted friend could
see it was printed on the screen, not the device but the print referring to
esolution it seems to want a very high resolution on windows

I wonder if this happens to anyone else. I have noticed if I put on my dell
windows 7 desktop using jaws 12, it loads up normally however I wait on
purpose not going to desktop,I have noticed in the morning if I do this and
wait Jaws will soon tell me what it is unhappy about.. Other day I am told
I am using an unknown device that it does not recognise a usb device. I
have not touched the delland no new device is on no wires are loose. I have
a laptop that I have treated to a new battery,I wonder if they are partof a
work group if it could have detected it, it is the right battery. I email a
friend who says"no it cannot be that, turn off the desktop and wait and
reload. I do this and all seems ok jaws does not mention any such thing
now. However now it says the screen resolution is not set at the very high
resolution it likes I have not altered it I turn off dell again and reload
it and this time no complaints, However I am baffled,Jaws I am sure cannot
be to blame it is being given information that is untrue There was no
unknown device at all if the resolution had altered it put itself right
However I cannot keep turning the computer on and off all day! any ideas?
thanks. Dorothy.

Re: Jaws 13 with Excel

TeddyBear

Hi Gary:

I found what the problem is....
In Office XP and Jaws 13 those reading options are not available.
I installed Jaws 13 on my Laptop running Windows 7 and Office 2010 and they appear just as you said.

I'm sorry, I should have mentioned that I have Windows XP and Office XP on my desk top computer.

Thanks again.

Tracy

Tracy,
Did you have your spreadsheet open when you pressed Insert v? You should hear JFW speak Quick Settings Excel. Typing title reading into the search box gave me 6 choices, with title reading at the top. I also tried typing just the word title into the box, and it gave me more choices, which included title reading.

If you have done all of the steps as outlined, I don't know what the problem could be.

Tracy,
Adding a little more information about settings title reading in Excel with JAWS 13, once you are in Quick Settings with Insert plus v, type title reading into the search box and arrow down to the first result. Press Enter on title reading, and this will take you to that section of the treeview. The settings should then be the same as they were in JFW 12.

Tracy,
You should still be able to use the same key combination and set up the reading of titles in Quick Settings just like you did in the Verbosity Menu of JAWS 12.

Dean Martineau <dean@...>

Indeed, try hitting insert+s. this is the screen echo setting. You want it
to say "highlighted." My hunch is that you have accidentally set it to
"all."
