Hi Folks
Is their a JAWS Keystroke that will tell you which Button has focus?
I have looked at the JAWS Help and found nothing.
I have JAWS 13 with W7 running 64 bit.
I am using Word 2007 with the spell check dialog, and I want to know if
the
Change button has focus, now I just tab to the dhange button or another
button. I have a large document to spell check, actually I am grammer
checking, since I have a tendency to add extra spaces.

Re: Focus Button Keystroke

John ESherrer

Hi Folks
Thank you for all your help.
I wanted to find out which key had focus hoping that the Change button you
would have focus.
Control E is the correct key, but the message I get is that JAWS cannot
determine which key has focus in this dialog box.
So I can tab to the appropriate button or use Alt C for change. This take
two hands to do his and is not efficient, but faster than tabbing through
all the buttons.

John,
If you want to activate the Change Button, press Alt c. This way, it
doesn't matter which button has focus. There are Alt-Key combinations for
the other buttons in the dialog as well. JAWS should speak them as you Tab
to them. If not, you will need to make a change in JAWS that controls what
keys are spoken.

Insert+E does not tell you which control has focus, it tells you what

I find the "read current line" command does this job. On a desktop keyboard,
this is insert+numpad 8.

For additional orientation, insert+b speaks the names of the controls in a
dialog box in the correct order.

Dave, it doesn't always work first time,. But just hang in there. When
the offending app closes, JAWS should come back. Of course, JAWS
occasionally gets dumped (if you suspect that, Alt-Tab through the open
apps), but these occasions are exceptions.

You know, as diligent as I am, I've not tried to remember the keystroke

Dave, before shutting down JAWS in this scenario, have you acted on
your
guess that IE is waiting to be closed by pressing alt-e? This shortcut
is
another way of activating that button. With XP and IE8, I find it
sometimes
works and saves some time. If it doesn't, It's time to resort to closing
JAWS, which I have to do all too often.

Bob,

It does, indeed it does. In fact when an application like IE crashes and
is
prompting to close the program, JAWS quits without a whimper so we have
no
idea what's happening.

When JAWS does not return after 40 to 60 seconds, I usually
Insert+Windows+F4 to do a surgical extraction of JAWS, followed by
Alt+Ctrl+J and sure enough, there's IE, wanting me to press the close
program button.

Frustrating, I know and almost makes me want to go back to JAWS 11.

As long as 2 minutes? I'll try being more patient. I just don't
understand
why I can't even bring up Task Manager at that time but I can start
Narrator
talking. Internet Explorer shouldn't bring Windows to a screetching,
hem,
silent stop like that, especially on a multy cor system.

This can have a number of causes. One cause is that the link is
bringing
up an inordinate number of graphics. Another reason might be an
incomplete
load of a page.

One thing which works for me is: After waiting a reasonable amount of
time, such as two minutes, press Insert+Escape to refresh the screen.

Jaws 13 sometimes stops talking when I click a link in IE8. I am able
to
start Narrator but am not able to navigate my computer. But, when I
press the power button to shut down, Jaws starts talking. Weird.

Haven't reproduced this yet.

Re: Jaws stops talking after clicking some links

Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)

Should or not, it can. I've had many occasions when one of these
Internet apps will hang, and most versions of JAWS will go dead quiet
until that app is closed--usually by brute force, bringing down every
other Internet app with it. That has gotten considerably better lately.

Control f6 doesn't appear to help in IE8. Sometimes helps in IE9 when
the virtual cursor isn't working. But, f6 has no effect when Jaws stops
talking altogether.

Hi all,

I have the same problem but I still use jfw 12.70. It happens when I
open
a
link or a web page at times but also jaws will disappear if I am away
from
the computer so when I come back jaws is gone.

I have an additional issue as my re boot button have disappeared into
the
tower so I can't just hit boot. I use i.e. 7 but it happens with
firefox
as
well.

I never had this issue with previous versions of jaws or i.e. since
started
using jaws about fifteen years ago.

Hi Bill,
if your friend has the 2011 version of windows live mail, then there's a Jaws guide to this available at:

In the section on reading messages, there's a sub-section on saving attachments.

Thank you.

Brandon,

You're experiencing the famous key sticking problem that's been part of JAWS
since version 3.5. I don't know how or why the Ctrl key sticking is making
your mouse cursor move, but any of the modifier keys (shift, Windows, Alt,
Ctrl) can be programmatically "stuck" in the keyboard buffer and alter all
subsequent keystrokes.

The resolution when it happens (and for me it happens every few days) is to
rapidly tap both keys in sequence several times, left/right/left/right etc.
I do this for Shift, Alt, Ctrl, and Windows. Then Escape to clear out
anything partially opened.

It usually fixes the problem.

Sounds like you do the same thing by holding down the Ctrl key, but either
key of the pairs can be the culprit.

Thanks for giving us the additional details on your "Ghost Mouse".

Hello,
It doesn't. I've just been hitting buttons and all of a sudden it will
manifest. The way I found it was control was that I was altabbing when it
began and it started saying ctrl alt tab.
Sometimes I guess it will just do ctrl for a little while, one character
press, and other times it will be a lock I have to cancel by holding down
control for 10 seconds.
I have my mouse pad disabled, so idk what's going on.

I'm not sure how this moves my pointer, except if there is a ctrl letter

Well, I think the situation is,
Yes you check the box;
checked the box that said "Disable tapping"
however I think if you want to disable, then you'll need to disable in the
device manager,
or, go into the
start menu edit box,
type mouse,
enter on mouse,
shift+tab right arrow to devices and disable there.

If you need the mouse for some reason,
Then?
You could turn it on.
Do you see,

No, if you have disabled both your mouse pad and the buttons, you should not
be having any erratic movement of the cursor. Were you able to find those
places to disable the mouse, as earlier directed?

If those steps did not work, then you may need to have someone help you
disable the mouse in the System BIOS itself. It may not be manageable via
standard drivers, if it's an embedded part of your laptop.

I had to do that on my older Dell -- use the BIOS to completely disable both
the touchpad and touchstick.

Fortunately on this newer Dell there is an Fn key that disables/enables the
mouse and touchstick -- very cool. In my case it's Fn key plus F5.

Yes, I don't know HP laptops, but in my case, the touchstick is not really a
stick, but a round button fairly flush with the surrounding keys. It's not
always obvious, so make sure to hunt for one, just in case.

If this is a Dell laptop, then there is both a pad and a touchstick. both
need to be disabled. As suggested, for mouse work, just connect a simple USB

Hello,
I’m wondering if anyone knows what’s going on:
I disabled the tapping feature on my mouse pad so sighted people could use
the mouse with the buttons. I know it’s disabled because when I tap it or
move my fingers along it nothing happens except for the mouse to move.
I’m still having the same problem I had when the mouse was enabled. At
random times I’m jumped to different windows, I’m moved to different places
in a document or email at random times and sometimes when I’m typing a
random bunch of text will be selected and deleted when I keep on typing.
Other people who have tested on my computer haven’t had this problem, so I’m
wondering if there is a way to find if there are some touch pads that aren’t
obvious that my hand position brushes? I don’t see anything except maybe
around the mouse pad or keys. There are lights around my spacebar and mouse
pad.
I’m running Windows 7 with Jaws 11. This jumping happens at random times and
in any application.
Thank you,

Brandon Keith Biggs
