Re: Enabling virtual ribbons on a windows 7 laptop

David <davidwhitehead1957@...>

Hello there;
In all due respect,
I totally disagree with the following statement.
I have heard that Windows 7 works much better if you enable virtual ribbons
in Jaws 13.
Well, windows 7, really doesn't care if you have the jaws ribbon feature on
or off.
The jaws ribbon feature only applies to the office 2010 and some of office
2007.
Having the ribbon feature on enables one to be able to navigate the menu's
easier.
In my opinion for what it's worth,
Using the ribbon feature really doesn't teach one how to use the ribbon
menu's effectively.
Plus, having the jaws ribbon feature on,
Inhibits one from using outlook hotkeys for the various ribbon items.

I have successfully done this on my new Windows PC at work, but can't seem

Can someone give me the steps for doing this, and let me know if it has to

Thanks!

Or just do a repair. I was thinking a minute ago. I didn't explain it
well, but I wasn't ENTIRELY wrong. I think someone said that
punctuation could only be changed at the default level, and that is
inaccurate. You can fiddle with any profile, and instruct it to load
only with the application(s) you choose. With my Bible, I use one
called NAB, and it loads every time the Bible does. If I tab away, the
default takes over, then NAB reverts when I return focus.

If after changing the voice profile settings as Bill described it still
announces more punctuation than you want to hear I would suggest you do
a uninstall/reinstall cycle, because this functionality definitely works
for me (and apparently plenty of others).

No, punctuation can be set any way you want in any or all profiles.
Default here refers to "all applications," not to a particular
profile.
To quickly and easily reach "default" in settings center, just tab up
once from the search box and tap D.

The only way to set default punctuation is to adjust it in your
default profile. For some reason, in recent versions of JAWS, FS made
punctuation setting ridiculously cumbersome.

The short description of how to create a profile is to open the JAWS
context menu with insert-j, then press enter on options. Arrow down
once to "voices."

Here, you have two choices, which you also select with the up or down
arrow key and by pressing enter. One is for voice adjustment and the
other for profiles. Actually, both involve profiles.

It's been a while since I've worked with this area of JAWS, and I'm in
a rush right now. See if this is enough information to get you going.
If not, please post again and I'll give more complete directions later
if no one else has.

Jawskey + v to get to quick settings, tab once to the list of choices, and press 'v' till the checkbox for virtual ribbon menus is displayed. Check or uncheck it. then open the applications menu and choose whether this setting should be permanent or temporary. then close the dialog.

Re: JAWS and OCR

Lisa Larges

Hi TerriLynne
Yes, the new OCR function in JAWS 13 will read pdf files saved as images.
To try this using your JAWS 13 demo version, open a PDF image file and press
Control + 1 to set the zoom level to "actual size", which will help in the
recognition process. then press Insert + the spacebar; you'll hear a little
double click sound. Then press the letter O for the OCR reader, and then the
letter W to read the screen. When JAWS has completed the recognition process
the JAWS voice will begin reading.
You can read up on it more by searching for "Convenient OCR" in the help
section.

From my experience, the new OCR feature is a great idea still in the
development process. I've found it to be helpful when trying to learn what
the text might be on a unlabeled control, and for some short pdf documents;
but, in general, I find that the accuracy of the character recognition is
slightly above poor.
I like this feature, and I hope JAWS will continue to improve it, but my own
recommendation would be to not upgrade to 13, if this is the only new
feature you are interested in.
However, it's definitely worth testing out first to see how successful you
can be with it, and to experiment some to learn its good and bad points.

Hi all,
I am currently using jaws 10 and thinking of upgrading to jaws 13. So I am
trying a demo of JAWS 13, and am very interested in its possible ability to
read .pdf documents. Can anyone tell me if the newest latest jaws programs
reads .pdf files? And what does this mean? Does it read .pdf documents which
are just images? Or does it have to be saved as text? And if the answer is
that it has to be saved as text, then Adobe already did that. If, however,
it should be able to read a document which has been saved as an image, can
anyone tell me how to get the program to work. Because it is currently just
telling me that it is an empty document, just as the jaws 10 does.

I would really appreciate your input.

Thanks,

My homepage is now m.facebook.com

The problem I'm having with Google is, occasionally I am informed that the
page has not loaded correctly, or it simply locks up in the search edit
field and no amount of depressing the escape and F6 key rectifies the
situation. Other times it simply refuses to load.

I've even carried out various trouble-shooting exercises and, while, I am
told that one or two modifications have been made to my IE settings to
enhance its performance, the problem still exists.

I've even checked for spy-ware and other potential threats and was
unsuccessful with my quest.

Trusting all is well and thank you for your support in this regard.

JAWS & IE 9

Philip Anderson <p.anderson@...>

Hello

Please can you help

I'm currently using JFW 12 and Windows 7 in conjunction with IE9. Up to now,
everything has been working fine, until today.

Whenever I launch IE9 - which usually defaults to Google, my homepage - I'm
more often than not experiencing the following:

* No window is active
* the Google page which I am unable to navigate

Then when I attempt to attempt to open Facebook through the mobile site, I
am either left still sitting in Google, or on FB's home page, but unable to
navigate.

Don't know why this is happening. Everything's been fine for the past 3
months.

Has anybody else experienced this - or a similar - problem?

Already I've cleared my internet history, updated windows and rebooted my
system, but to no avail.

Your help in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Kind regards

Philip

Re: Cell width in Excel

Hi, David.
It seems everything in Win7 is tied up in one ribbon or another. *pun
intended*
I know that JFW announces the shortcut keys that can be used, but is there a
way to be able to see the keystroke combination on a braille display? I know
that a lot of the shortcuts previously used with older versions of Excel can
still be used, but I don't know them, and when JFW says the shortcut, it
goes by way too fast for me to memorize.
Thanks,
Dani

I figured it out at work today but I can't tell you how until I get back on
the windows 7 machine Tuesday. It is tied up in a ribbon. {;-) Grin If I

don't see the answer on the list I'll give it a try again and post the
procedure.

How do I find out the width of a cell in Excel 2010? I thought insert+f1
included cell width, but it appears not to.

Thanks a bunch.

Re: Cell width in Excel

insert+f gives cell width, but it's in a different measurement from the work sheet. So 8.43 characters turns into 4 something elses.

Hi , also I think in 2007-2010 with ribbons turned on:
ALT, DOWN ARROW TO CELLS, RIGHT ARROW ONCE, F, W, read the with, then tab
once to OK and enter.

If so, what? Have any of you managed the new Yahoo mailbox successfully?
Perhaps you could give me some tips. Also, is there a way to turn the
