upgrade to IE8 for XP while they await being able to upgrade to Win7
and IE9. I distinctly remember when IE8 first came on the scene that
accessibility and other problems made it a horrorshow. Is that still
the case, or is it worth going to IE8 now?

I find IE8 completely accessible. I think some people didn't take to the
tabs feature, but it's very helpful. I used to prefer Firefox to IE, but
I've returned to having IE as my default.

Re: How's accessibility fof IE8?

Hi,
I'd say it'll depend on JAWS version. If your clients have later versions of JAWS (say, 10 or 11), then IE8 should work fine with it.
Cheers,
Joseph

Re: Outlook 2010 and JAWS reading expand and collapse

Hi Dondi,

Here you go;

Creating a Graphic Label Manually
To practice creating a Graphic Label, use HJPad. To launch HJPad go to
Start, Programs, JAWS X (where X is the JAWS version number), Run HJPad.

Using the Graphics Labeler is easy, but before you start ensure that you
have speak graphics verbosity turned on. Follow these steps to be sure:

With HJPad open, press INSERT+V to bring up the Verbosity dialog box.
Press G to move to the Graphics Verbosity item in the list box.
Press the SPACEBAR until you hear JAWS say, "All graphics," and then press
ENTER.
Now that all graphics will be spoken, you are ready to find a graphic to
label.

Press the NUM PAD MINUS key to activate the JAWS cursor.
Tip: To navigate to the toolbar, first press PAGE UP to move to the top of
the window, and then press HOME to move to the top, left.

Use the arrow keys to move to the first toolbar button. You will hear,
"Graphic XXX." XXX can indicate any number.
Press INSERT+G to open the Graphics Labeler.
When the Graphics Labeler is opened, the focus is in the edit field, where
you should enter the label for the graphic. It will contain the graphic
number.
Press the delete key to remove the number then, type the name for your
graphic.
Press the TAB key to move to the Braille label field. Here you can enter a
label for a Braille display.
Next press the TAB key to move to a group of radio buttons that will let you
determine where you want to save the label, in the application file, default
file, or both files. Choose the application file.
Press ENTER to activate your graphic label.
Note: To edit a graphic label, use the same procedure that you would to
create a new graphic label, and just change the name of the label in the
Graphics
Labeler when it opens. To delete a graphic label, do the same, but delete
the name in the Graphics Labeler.

Using the Auto Graphics Labeler
The Auto Graphics Labeler assigns a text label to all graphics that are
associated with ToolTips. A ToolTip is a brief description of a graphic that
appears
on the screen as you point to the graphic with your mouse.

To activate the Auto Graphics Labeler, open the desired application, and
press CTRL+INSERT+G.

JAWS will attempt to label all graphics. Do not move the mouse or press any
keys on the keyboard until JAWS states that the Auto Graphics Labeler is
finished.
When JAWS finishes, it will announce the newly labeled graphics.

After using the Auto Graphics Labeler, you can use CTRL+INSERT+SHIFT+G to
bring up the Select Graphic to Click Dialog box. With this dialog box, you
can
use your arrow keys to move through the available graphics, and then press
the TAB key to move to the OK button and press ENTER to activate the graphic
you selected.

Hope this helped. Take care.
Mike

Dondi,

Graphics labeling is a JAWS function. You could start learning about it by
going into key identifier mode with JAWS key+1 on the numbers row above
the
letters. Then press JAWS key+g and control+JAWS key+g to have their
functions described.

Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)

It's amazing how fast that stuff fades from memory, but I used the free
program for several years. I scheduled scans for 8:00 PM daily, and
stuck to that schedule most of the time. As I recall, the JAWS cursor
met my needs admirably. Same goes for Avira, which I'm using now, but
you folks just about have me persuaded to go with Security Essentials
when my current program expires late this year.

Hi Brad,

I am using the free 2012 version of AVG along with JAWS 13.
When you open the program you will probably want to update it.
There are two ways to do this:
1. Use the JAWS cursor or convenient OCR to brows the program screen,
and when you find the desired button route the PC Cursor to the JAWS
cursor.
2. A somewhat simpler option is to press Alt, navigate to the tools or
options menu, and scroll down to the option relating to updating (you
may find it useful to use the JAWS cursor and/or convenient OCR at this
point again).

The procedure for carrying out a virus scan is similar, you can follow
step one exactly the same until you find the desired scan related
button.
In addition, you may be required to choose between a whole system scan
or other options, but the same strategy of the JAWS cursor or convenient
OCR is used.
The second option is again somewhat similar to the above option 2.
Press Alt, navigate to the Tools or Options menu, and choose the desired
scan option.
Just like before, you can use the JAWS cursor and convenient OCR to find
out more information on what is happening on the screen.

I hope this has been of some help. This may not be the most efficient
way to use AVG but, its the way that I have been able to use it
successfully.

Kindest regards,

Niall.

Re: avg and its and scripts

Dondi

Hi,

AVG comes with a scheduled scan already setup in the software, you just have
to enable. The scan defaults to run on Wednesdays at 12:00 PM. Here's how
you enable this:
Open the AVG user interface.
Go to the tools menu.
Arrow down to advance settings and press enter.
Arrow down a list of settings to schedules and open this by pressing the
right arrow.
Arrow down once to scheduled scans.
Tab through a series of buttons and you should start to hear the settings
for the scan.
When you get through the scan settings press space bar on the enable this
task button.
Tab to OK and press space bar.
Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit
JAWS 13
AVG 2012

Re: avg and its and scripts

Niall Gallagher

Hi Brad,

I am using the free 2012 version of AVG along with JAWS 13.
When you open the program you will probably want to update it.
There are two ways to do this:
1. Use the JAWS cursor or convenient OCR to brows the program screen, and when you find the desired button route the PC Cursor to the JAWS cursor.
2. A somewhat simpler option is to press Alt, navigate to the tools or options menu, and scroll down to the option relating to updating (you may find it useful to use the JAWS cursor and/or convenient OCR at this point again).

The procedure for carrying out a virus scan is similar, you can follow step one exactly the same until you find the desired scan related button.
In addition, you may be required to choose between a whole system scan or other options, but the same strategy of the JAWS cursor or convenient OCR is used.
The second option is again somewhat similar to the above option 2.
Press Alt, navigate to the Tools or Options menu, and choose the desired scan option.
Just like before, you can use the JAWS cursor and convenient OCR to find out more information on what is happening on the screen.

I hope this has been of some help. This may not be the most efficient way to use AVG but, its the way that I have been able to use it successfully.

Kindest regards,

Niall.

avg and its and scripts

brad

Does anyone here use the abg antivirus program and can be able to tell me
how to do a virus scan on my computer. Perhaps there are some jaws scripts
that can help or even a detorial that can walk me through the software
program?

Hi Folks Is their a JAWS Keystroke that will tell you which Button has
focus? I have looked at the JAWS Help and found nothing. I have JAWS 13 with
W7 running 64 bit. I am using Word 2007 with the spell check dialog, and I
want to know if the Change button has focus, now I just tab to the dhange
button or another button. I have a large document to spell check, actually I
am grammer checking, since I have a tendency to add extra spaces. John

Outlook 2010 and JAWS reading expand and collapse

Dondi

Hi Everyone,

Here's a question I heard on the BlindTech email list but I thought it
belonged here in the JAWS list. In Outlook 2010 how do you get JAWS to
announce expand and collapse when in the conversation view?

Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit

JAWS 13
