Kimsan,

You actually have both a touch pad and a touchsgick. I disabled both.
However it required someone going into the BIOS to do this.

Using the Control Panel would allow only one of the two to be disabled --
not both.

2. Route the Jaws cursor to the PC cursor & press the page up button / key.

I have the same problem and have gone back to version 12 because of
it. The only other "solution" I have is to read the word count info
with the jaws cursor. It's a pain but gets the job done.

This is an issue that FS really needs to address.

Re: Windows 7, Jaws, and email

rogerbailey81@...

As a matter of fact, I just bought a new Windows 7 computer and downloaded Windows Live Mail. There are some things about it that I like better than Outlook Express and other things that I like Outlook Express for. I am thinking, though, that the real reason I like Outlook Express for some things is because I am just used to it. It took me a little while to figure out where the sub folders in WLM were, but it turns out that all you have to do is to press the right arrow key when you are focused on your in box and it expands with the sent mail, deleted mail, saved mail and so forth folders. You have a different set of sub folders for each account too. The very best thing about WLM is how easy it is to set up an email account with it. When I set up my accounts with Outlook Express I didn't quite know what I was doing and it was a very long and frustrating process. With WLM you just enter your email address and password and WLM does all the rest. Right now my Windows Live Mail has stopped working, though, and I am replying right now through web mail. I think the problem is my security system, though, and I will have to figure out which technical support number to call about it. As a long time Outlook Express user, though, I will say that if I can't get this resolved pretty soon I will look into going back to that. I am just more comfortable with what I am used to.

Hi all,

Just got a new laptop running Windows 7.
Since I am an old user of Outlook Express, and I do not have Outlook, I am
wondering what the most accessible email client is with Jaws?
How is Windows Live Mail, or Thunderbird?

I am running the most current version of Jaws 13.

Thanks,

Dave, I bet you are right about why I did not have the file. I installed
SP3 recently and it knocked out my wireless connection. I do not possess
the knowledge or expertise, not to mention the patience, to troubleshoot a
problem like that so I did a restore point and am going to try to make it
with SP2 until I end up with Windows 7 or whatever MS has in release when I
need a new computer.

Now, I wonder what operating system and which service pack Ted has.

Joni,

I think you've hit on the reason for your and Ted's problem. My XP was
updated to SP3 years ago so I would not have had any issues with the lack of
that DLL. Microsoft often adds new functionality to any of its service pack
releases and even in many of their interim patches.

For Windows 7 there are likely patches that have come out since its
inception that also add a DLL like that one.

This seems to be more a matter of you and Ted both having an operating
system that was behind one or more service packs or patches, and that JAWS
13 was written to take advantage of an updated DLL neither of you had yet.

And of course FS will not try to include all the necessary DLL in their
package -- that would make it a very large installation.

I ran into the same issue with an application needing a newer version of the
Microsoft.Net Framework. Again a DLL that I needed to update. I followed the
suggested link, downloaded from the MS site, and then went back to the
install.

Re: Broken Quick Settings

Dave,

Your guess is as good as mine. Note that Joni just posted that her OS is XP
Home Service Pack 2, consistent with Ms's list. I searched my XP Service
Pack 3 system files and found several with "MSXML6" in their name, so one
way or the other it appears this issue is addressed differently between
Service Packs. And again, neither Windows 7 nor Vista is in the list of OS's
that support the file that solved Joni's problem, as it will undoubtedly
help others.

This is excellent information. However, it looks like it isn't advisable for
many systems. I've just read through the page you link to, Joni. In the list
of operating systems that support these files, XP Service Packs 1 and 2 are
named, but not the final XP Service Pack 3. Windows 7 and Vista are also
not named. Here's the list from the website:

Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, Windows Server

Hi there.
I use Windows 7 and JAWS 12, Internet Explorer 8 Firefox 7.

Sometimes on a web page I can't navigate, because tool bars are running in
the background. I only find that out if I ask a sighted person, who then
moves the tool bars so I can proceed.
How can I find out if tool bars are in my way, and if possible, how can I
move them?
Thank you.

I confess I have no idea what this file is and why I did not have it,

Hope you get things remedied, even though it is a minor issue in the

Here's a strange one. Since upgrading my home machine to the last
build, Quick Settings no longer works. It works fine at the office.
The former was upgraded first from the DVD, and then the Internet
download. The latter went straight from 10 to the latest build of 13.
When I try to access Quick settings, I get a quirky error message about
the inability to access Ms XML 6.0. I tried repairing the installation
to no avail. Now that I remember, I installed from the thumb drive,
which had always worked before. Anyone ever seen this kind of thing?

Wish I could easily replicate the message, but it's difficult to copy
and paste. It's just an overlay, which disappears when you press okay,
and Virtual Viewer (or results viewer, as they call it now) doesn't
capture it. Performance seems otherwise unimpaired.

2003, Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1, Windows XP Service Pack 1, Windows
XP Service Pack 2

Well, regardless what I do, I'm finding jaws 13 quick settings a real
pain.

I set jaws to automatically read messages, it doesn't?
I set jaws to silent the top&bottom alert, it doesn't?
I set jaws not to read the greater signs, it does?
Very annoying.
I already did 1 uninstall,
So, I think it will be back to 12 again. Quick settings FS says?
How about, annoying settings?

tool bars in the background

I use Windows 7 and JAWS 12, Internet Explorer 8 Firefox 7.

Sometimes on a web page I can't navigate, because tool bars are running in

How can I find out if tool bars are in my way, and if possible, how can I

Ted, I downloaded the first file. I assumed it was for a 32-bit
computer
since the next one said 64. This is the one I chose:

msxml6.msi
1.5 MB

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=3988

I confess I have no idea what this file is and why I did not have it,
but
since the error message said it as the culprit, I decided I would
download
it and see what happened.

Hope you get things remedied, even though it is a minor issue in the
scheme
of things. Please post what FS advises.

I followed the link, and encountered no fewer than 4 files, and I have
no idea which one would be appropriate. Besides, it's almost
inconceivable that, during the installation, I managed to delete a file
I'd be lucky to find with a Geiger counter. I'll have a day off on the
13th of next month, and would like to do a tandem session then with FS.
Mean time, everything else functions perfectly. If I have to customize
the response of an Excel sheet, I guess I'll have to load JAWS 10 until
then. The old adjust JAWS still works fine.

2003, Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1, Windows XP Service Pack 1, Windows
XP Service Pack 2

Well, regardless what I do, I'm finding jaws 13 quick settings a real
pain.

I set jaws to automatically read messages, it doesn't?
I set jaws to silent the top&bottom alert, it doesn't?
I set jaws not to read the greater signs, it does?
Very annoying.
I already did 1 uninstall,
So, I think it will be back to 12 again. Quick settings FS says?
How about, annoying settings?

Ted and Joni,

Just curious. Can each of you answer whether you installed JAWS 13 from
a
DVD or the downloaded executable from FS, - or - did you accept it as an
update? I'm just wondering since I had nothing like this happen with my
install.

And once again I silently thank FS for changing the name from JAWS
Option to
Quick Settings. The subtle tweak was lost on me -- and the rationale as
well.

Well, Joni, I'll send this home and give it a whirl. For the life of
me, I can't see how I broke it, but it may have happened on the initial
installation try. That was a little strange. Instead of going through
the full routine, it did the syncopated clock, then told me it had made
changes and to reboot. I was a little skeptical, but saw the new
version number. The next day (yesterday), I did try a new installation,
which took me to the repair, modify, Etc. I chose repair; didn't help.
Maybe I should try it from the hard drive. That's how I did it here.

Re: Windows7, Jaws, and email

Tom Lange

Hi Chris,
Windows Live will get you by in a pinch. Compared too Outlook Express, it seems a bit clunky, but that's just my opinion and I'm sure some will beg to differ with me. When I first tried it on my laptop running Windows 7, I got really angry and frustrated that although I could copy and move messages using old familiar keystrokes, Windows Live wouldn't let me do first letter navigation to select folder names. For that reason alone I've switched over to Outlook. If you can get a student version of Office which has Outlook, or some other version of Office on the cheap, I'd go for that.

Hi all,

Just got a new laptop running Windows7.
Since I am an old user of Outlook Express, and I do not have Outlook, I am wondering what the most accessible email client is with Jaws?
How is Windows Live Mail, or Thunderbird?

I am running the most current version of Jaws 13.

Thanks,

Chris

Re: Broken Quick Settings

Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)

I did both. I did an initial installation with the DVD to get convenient
OCR without a lot of fuss and bother. Then I installed the new
maintenance release when it came out. That's when things began to get
interesting, and it makes no sense at all. I tried a roll back last
night; didn't help.

The subtle tweak was lost on me -- and the rationale as
well.

For a little additional help, just load narrator. It's not much, but
will give just the help you need here. Once you load JAWS, just do as
the others have suggested.

Hi Cindy;

One way you can do this is,
Windows+r=run;

Now type,
Jaws13 and press enter.

Another way is,
You can go to your desktop, windows+m, and if your certain there's no
other
icon starting with j the letter "j",
Then press j=jaws,
Press enter.

OK, I restarted my Net Book and the installation continued and went very
quickly, this time.

After installing JAWS 13, I uninstalled JAWS 11, but left shared files
and
settings. I restarted the computer after the installation was complete,
but
JAWS 13 does not start automatically. I thought it would. I don't have
a
shortcut key set to start it, yet. So, what's the easiest way to start
JAWS
13 after the computer starts?

Re: Broken Quick Settings

Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)

I followed the link, and encountered no fewer than 4 files, and I have
no idea which one would be appropriate. Besides, it's almost
inconceivable that, during the installation, I managed to delete a file
I'd be lucky to find with a Geiger counter. I'll have a day off on the
13th of next month, and would like to do a tandem session then with FS.
Mean time, everything else functions perfectly. If I have to customize
the response of an Excel sheet, I guess I'll have to load JAWS 10 until
then. The old adjust JAWS still works fine.

Whoa. So it is--called Quick Settings in JAWS 13, that is. However, for
the
record, I haven't received that error message. In case I do, I've saved
your
solution. Thanks.
