Re: Windows 7, Jaws, and email
rogerbailey81@...
As a matter of fact, I just bought a new Windows 7 computer and downloaded Windows Live Mail. There are some things about it that I like better than Outlook Express and other things that I like Outlook Express for. I am thinking, though, that the real reason I like Outlook Express for some things is because I am just used to it. It took me a little while to figure out where the sub folders in WLM were, but it turns out that all you have to do is to press the right arrow key when you are focused on your in box and it expands with the sent mail, deleted mail, saved mail and so forth folders. You have a different set of sub folders for each account too. The very best thing about WLM is how easy it is to set up an email account with it. When I set up my accounts with Outlook Express I didn't quite know what I was doing and it was a very long and frustrating process. With WLM you just enter your email address and password and WLM does all the rest. Right now my Windows Live Mail has stopped working, though, and I am replying right now through web mail. I think the problem is my security system, though, and I will have to figure out which technical support number to call about it. As a long time Outlook Express user, though, I will say that if I can't get this resolved pretty soon I will look into going back to that. I am just more comfortable with what I am used to.

I do not possess the knowledge or expertise, not to mention the patience, to troubleshoot a problem like that so I did a restore point and am going to try to make it with SP2 until I end up with Windows 7 or whatever MS has in release when I need a new computer. Now, I wonder what operating system and which service pack Ted has. Joni

Microsoft often adds new functionality to any of its service pack releases and even in many of their interim patches. For Windows 7 there are likely patches that have come out since its inception that also add a DLL like that one. This seems to be more a matter of you and Ted both having an operating system that was behind one or more service packs or patches, and that JAWS 13 was written to take advantage of an updated DLL neither of you had yet. And of course FS will not try to include all the necessary DLL in their package -- that would make it a very large installation. Your guess is as good as mine. Note that Joni just posted that her OS is XP Home Service Pack 2, consistent with Ms's list. I searched my XP Service Pack 3 system files and found several with "MSXML6" in their name, so one way or the other it appears this issue is addressed differently between Service Packs. And again, neither Windows 7 nor Vista is in the list of OS's that support the file that solved Joni's problem, as it will undoubtedly help others.

I use Windows 7 and JAWS 12, Internet Explorer 8 Firefox 7. Sometimes on a web page I can't navigate, because tool bars are running in the background. Windows Live will get you by in a pinch. Compared too Outlook Express, it seems a bit clunky, but that's just my opinion and I'm sure some will beg to differ with me. When I first tried it on my laptop running Windows 7, I got really angry and frustrated that although I could copy and move messages using old familiar keystrokes, Windows Live wouldn't let me do first letter navigation to select folder names. For that reason alone I've switched over to Outlook. If you can get a student version of Office which has Outlook, or some other version of Office on the cheap, I'd go for that. Tom

After installing JAWS 13, I uninstalled JAWS 11, but left shared files and settings. I restarted the computer after the installation was complete, but JAWS 13 does not start automatically. I thought it would. I don't have a shortcut key set to start it, yet. So, what's the easiest way to start JAWS 13 after the computer starts? I followed the link, and encountered no fewer than 4 files, and I have

no idea which one would be appropriate. Besides, it's almost inconceivable that, during the installation, I managed to delete a file I'd be lucky to find with a Geiger counter. I'll have a day off on the 13th of next month, and would like to do a tandem session then with FS. Mean time, everything else functions perfectly. If I have to customize the response of an Excel sheet, I guess I'll have to load JAWS 10 until then. The old adjust JAWS still works fine. Ted

Since upgrading my home machine to the last build, Quick Settings no longer works. It works fine at the office. The former was upgraded first from the DVD, and then the Internet download. The latter went straight from 10 to the latest build of 13. When I try to access Quick settings, I get a quirky error message about the inability to access Ms XML 6.0. I tried repairing the installation to no avail. Now that I remember, I installed from the thumb drive, which had always worked before. Anyone ever seen this kind of thing? Wish I could easily replicate the message, but it's difficult to copy and paste. It's just an overlay, which disappears when you press okay, and Virtual Viewer (or results viewer, as they call it now) doesn't capture it. Performance seems otherwise unimpaired.
