Dave,
I suspect that you have actually hit the problem nail squarely on the head
with your analysys.
Having spent a quarter century as a DBA I can tell you that structured
testing and evaluation is absolutely necessary for any sucessful
implimentation of a product/upgrade.
What we have seen in 12 is a direct result of haphazard testing and
debugging.

Holgar,

That's not a true beta test in the sense I mean. A true beta test is to have

a team of internal Freedom Scientific power-users who are assigned specific
features and test specific applications on a new platform, trying all sorts
of combinations and permutations, then feeding the results back to the
development team. This ensures that all aspects of the software, both new
features and original features are tested to make sure they all play
together.

What FS does is actually a disservice to the customers, as it really says
that they don't have the resources or patience to do all the necessary
brute-force testing inside their walls. Instead they push out the product
and hope that the general user population will somehow catch the bugs they
could not.

And in fact the testing done by the general public is not structured so not
a chance that it will cover all the areas that need testing. I would expect
that most of the public beta-so-called-testers are just users who want an
early copy to try out and start using, and don't bother wringing out all the

capabilities and combinations of applications for integrity. It's a lot like

shooting craps, and hoping that you eventually cover all the possible bets
in a single evening.

Don,

That's funny! I actually was a beta-tester in that sense, and still got
married.

In any case, you can download a "beta" from FS and use it as long as the
version is not released. Once it's released, the "beta" is supposed to
expire and you will need to either use up an SMA or purchase.

Re: jaws any version

Dorothy <Dorothy.ingram-gorban@...>

adrian you are right and last night I recalled that in my case I did use
the sga act, dated 1979. in later years it has been updated to cover
distance selling. However it is a good act Jaws is sold under licence of
course. However imagine this, you are buying your first ever computer, you
have been assessed by a salesman who made a home visit, and been to another
company also needs are a computer a scanner a monitor a printer and an OCR,
in all I got 3 quotes amount was £3,500 One a bit less due to a cheaper
OCR.you are able to see some things still likewhite print on a black
background, and are told "that is no problem jaws is best for you the
equipment arrives ready set to the setting you need all is tested ready to
plug in and go. I did not have internet connection, but that was for me to
choose in due course In no case did I get told of any problems However
tutors I paid to give me some tuition found jaws played up ,they did not
know why one was from dorton college he knew jaws, another was a lady again
she was baffled. Had I known supernova for instance could do easily what I
needed fine I would have boughtit. I went to the fs help site once on line
it
was in germany and the fs technical support got on to sole vendor, now they
came back and forth put magic on,magic made it worse I did not need
magnification so that was a few hundred pounds down the drain.,. I will not
drag out this agony much longer but I did refer to the sga act firmly. In
the end I had no option,I was not the problemI knew that and so did the
tutors I was paying. eric damery made suggestions they did not work,a
bright young man doing research did pin down the problem. eventually I put
all details and recordings in a packet sent to fs in stPetersburg to a
doctor Lee hamilton. why dr hamilton? I read his cv and thought he seems ok
in
advance I contacted his pa,she promised to see he got it personally.well
later I had a telephone call from Bryan carver director of tecnical
support. He said we have run tests and yes you are right we had the same
issues and magic was no good either in factmade it d worse. iwas told a
script wouldn't fix it only a revamp of the software and Fs did not intend
doing thatI got an apology.I should not have had to endure such an ordeal of
course, but I had to fight or go under I was so angry I could never go
through that again however. Dorothy.. I----- Original

There have been several muddying messages on this subject on this list.
First, FS's license by itself doesn't determine what rights users have. In
the U.S., state law typically recognizes implied warranty protections that
are additional to the express warranties written into a license agreement.
I
believe this dual protection is followed in countries that have an English
common law heritage.

There is no need to get into the distinctions among copyright, patents,
trademarks and other intellectual property rights. The concept of a
product's fitness to serve the purpose for which it is intended is a
consumer protection.

Most countries run consumer protection offices. In the U.S., the best
place
to go for this kind of assistance is the Attorney General's office of the
state where you live, although some of those offices will refer complaints
to the A.G. for the state where the company has its home office. One or
two
complaints are unlikely to generate a serious response, but complaints
from
a sizable number of consumers could trigger enforcement action.

I am not advocating a complaint-filing campaign. Many subscribers to this
list are content with JAWS, a factor that would go into any enforcement
officer's decision-making process. I'm just trying to clear up the
misunderstandings in this thread.

Dear list I just want to be sure that Jaws and in fact all screen readers

was pertaining to jaws however. One of the posts said he was not sure
about
USA, and mentioned the SGA act, that in Uk means the sale of goods act of
1979, It states an item sold must be "fit for purpose" in English law it
is
6 years in Scotland it is 5, the listersaid "i do not know about USA. Well
that act is of course very important but although many Posts were posted,

Re: jaws any version

inthane <inthaneelf@...>

arg,

what she is talking about is a law in several countries that allows folks to take legal action if a company clamed something is for the use of and/or good for doing, and then the software falls flat on the job.

under such laws a company like FS could be held responsible for replacing or otherwise making good for the rather bad performance and usability of jaws 12, a law that I intend to check into to promote here at home!

not a member of,a friend just selects any item he thinks is interesting It
was pertaining to jaws however. One of the posts said he was not sure about
USA, and mentioned the SGA act, that in Uk means the sale of goods act of
1979, It states an item sold must be "fit for purpose" in English law it is
6 years in Scotland it is 5, the listersaid "i do not know about USA. Well
that act is of course very important but although many Posts were posted, no
one mentioned that software is in fact sold underLicence I expect the Usa

ah no, in fact most try to deny the very concept of this law, go read the ula of any american sold software,
"not guaranteed for a particular use" and such

it sounds like something we need to look into and perhaps push for here!

Don,

Unless you are time-constrained to purchase a new version, I'd wait for a
while and watch this list to see what the users have to say about the new
release. No point in paying for something that either broke what you had
before, or didn't add anything you care about.

Again presuming that you don't have an SMA clock ticking.

That's funny! I actually was a beta-tester in that sense, and still got

In any case, you can download a "beta" from FS and use it as long as the
version is not released. Once it's released, the "beta" is supposed to
expire and you will need to either use up an SMA or purchase.

Hi Brian, Jim & peter,

When trying to make changes in cleaner / registry , cleaning/ scanning
options these are the checkboxes that I could never get Jaws to read if they
are checked or not as I arrowed down through them. I went as far as
attempting to label the graphics, & that didn't help either. In looking
through CCleaner, cleaning / scanning options, these are the only checkboxes
there are, except for making changes in tools, options, & settings.
Everything else uses buttons. In order to save myself some time, when
setting CCleaner up on other computers, after getting CCleaner the way I
wanted it on the first computer, I copied the, ccleaner.ini , file and
pasted it into the CCleaner folder in Program Files located in root of the C
drive of our other computers. Now all the computers have CCleaner working
the same & didn't have to spend all that time configuring CCleaner on each
computer separately. Take care.

When you say work fine you mean that as you move down the list of items
jaws
says whether it is checked or unchecked without you having to press space

What is the best version of C Cleaner that works well with Jaws 11?
I've noticed the latest version check boxes aren't spoken automatically
and
one has to double check every item to know either way which becomes so
tiresome.

cheers,

Jim

Re: How to check windows version and hardware

Mike & Barbara <mb69mach1@...>

Hi 2.G.I,

No ideas on how to get Gmail to work better. I have a friend that all she
has had is problems with Gmail so, we got her setup withA T &T, her Internet
Service Provider, to insure that she will be able to send / receive her
email. Yes, I am running XP Home on the desktops but, my wife has XP Pro
on her laptop. I will play around on her laptop tomorrow to see how your
steps work there. Thank you very much for getting back to me & explaining
why the steps were not working. Take care.
Mike

Hi Mike,
sorry about the slow reply,
I been having trouble getting mail out using Eudora.
I am on W7 32 bit & using a gmail account,
even though the messege says has been sent, it clearly doesnt go out.
So any ideas let me know please.

Regarding the systeminfo,
It works on xp pro,
but I tryed systeminfo out on a xp home system,
& I got the same result as you did, gee I been using that tool for
around 5 years, & I have obviously never ran it on a xp home OS before.
So I checked, & no systeminfo.exe in the system32 folder on the xp home
OS.

Are you running xp home?

Best wishes.

Hi 2.G.I,
Sorry about my last post, i didn't enter all the information & questions
that I intended to enter.
I am running XP & after I type, CMD, into the run dialog, press enter,
type in systeminfo, & press enter, this is the message I receive;
graphic 329 C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.
C:\Documents and Settings\Mike>systeminfo
'systeminfo' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

Did I miss astep, or do these steps not work with XP? Thanks much, take
care.
Mike

Hi, you can do the following.
press windows r to open the run box
type in cmd & press enter
this will open the command prompt.
once its open type in
systeminfo & press enter
this will give you what you are looking for along with a lot of other
details, how ever a lot of the output will be pushed up the screen &
the jaws cant read it, do the following
press alt space
this will open a menu bar, up arrow till you hear edit sub menu
right arrow once, & then down arrow till you hear select all, then press
enter
this will highlight all of the output, press enter & this will add it
to the clipboard.
press windows r again to open the run box
now type in notepad
press enter & this will open a blank notepad document.
now press control v to paist all the output.
now you can go back to the top & read it.
you may need to maximise the notepad window.
There are other ways to get the info you are looking for, but without
knowing what OS you are on & what style config the control panel view
is in, I think its better to say to go this way.
If you need any help understanding any of the output I am happy to help.
Good luck
HTH

jaws 13 beta out next week:

Kenny Peyattt jr.

I took the jaws 12 beta for a test drive and I used my focus 44 braille display to test the new jaws braillein feature. Well When I pressed one of the advance bars to pan through the document I was getting garbaled characters. The problem was that the braille translation ingien used in jaws wasn't playing nice with jaws it self. When I filled out the beta report form I had to specify what operating system I was using.
