Re: Copying text from a web page

Marquette, Ed <Ed.Marquette@...>

If you "Paste Special" using unicode text, all you get is the text. In Word, for example, whatever font, style, or attribute is in effect at the point of the cursor where you paste will apply to the text you paste in. That protects against mixing fonts in a single document.

Does this strip the formatting on the selected material so that you do not
have various formats in one document? For example, you may copy something
with one font and be pasting into a document using another font. Just
clarifying.

I agree with Sharon; however, if you want to avoid clutter, instead of using
control plus v to paste, try using the "paste special" option if, for
example, you are using Microsoft Word or WordPad. Then, choose Unicode
text.

shift+control+left and/or right arrows then control+c to copy. Press

Re: Copying text from a web page

Matthew Horspool <mhorspool@...>

Hi Kim,

If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say it had something to do with the new
virtual cursor copy/paste logic introduced into JAWS a couple of versions
back, which has always been buggy in my experience. Try the following:

1. From within a browser window, press JAWSKey+V.

2. DownArrow to 'Virtual Cursor Options' and, if it's closed, RightArrow to
open it.

3. DownArrow until you get to 'Select and Copy' and press the SPACEBAR to
toggle this to 'From Virtual Cursor' (it's on 'Full Content using On-Screen
Highlight' by default).

4. Press ENTER and, just to be sure, ALT+TAB away from, and back to, the web
page.

Let me know if this works.

Matthew

Re: Copying text from a web page

Adrian Spratt

Kim, I've just located the suggestion Joni posted. Mike posted another
suggestion that's similar to Ed's, which I could also copy. Meanwhile, here
is Joni's:

I was having trouble copying from web pages also with JAWS 12. Someone on
another list told me to try changing something in the adjust JAWS options
dialog while in Internet Explorer.

I hit insert v and then arrowed down a few times to virtual cursor options.

The first item said select and copy full content using on screen highlight.
I pressed the spacebar to toggle it to say select and copy from virtual
cursor. I then hit alt c to close the dialog. So far the setting has stuck
for me and it copies and pastes plain text into Word, without all of the
links and headings. It was a nice simple solution once I knew about it.

Re: Copying text from a web page

Adrian Spratt

These are useful instructions and suggestions, but I believe Kim is aware of
standard copy and paste techniques. She may be having the problem I do with
JAWS 12 that JAWS somehow won't select text properly, which makes copying
impossible. In my case, I have to close out JAWS 12 and bring up JAWS 11,
where the problem doesn't occur. I'm waiting for lister comments on the
current JAWS 13 update before upgrading.

Could you clarify, Kim?

sure, it only works page by page but here goes,

First, hit ctrl-1 to put acrobat reader into actual size zoom mode, it
would also probably be good to make sure that view->Page display has
single page view checked but that isn't quite as important.

Now, type jaws+space then o then w, this will cause jaws to recognize
the current page of text, you can use the page up, page down, up and
down arrow keys and some other navigation keys, but if you change the
jaws cursor mode or attempt to do much of anything beside read jaws
will forget the recognized text.

When you are ready to go to the next page hit ctrl-page down and do
the jaws+space, o, w again and so on.

This happens when you enable Firefox's full screen mode, to get out of
it activate the search bar (ctrl-K by default) then hit tab so that
the page tab bar is focused then hit f11.

I only recommend doing it there because I have had mixed results when
other locations have had focus but that one seems to work all the
time.
