download the executable file directly from the web site and save it to your

Re: Putting Jaws to sleep

Dave...

Dondi,

Usually when you install JAWS the shortcut is automatically assigned to your
desktop shortcut. What happens if you press Ctrl+Alt+J? Does it bring up the
JAWS dialog?

Then unload JAWS with Ctrl+F4 and try it again to see what happens. Which
version of JAWS was loaded?
Get back to me with your findings.

Is that "sleep" different from using Insert plus F-4? I know the latter
actually shuts JAWS down, but it seems quicker and easier than going to the
Settings Center. Just wondering what advantages there are of using "sleep"
over just unloading JAWS and restarting again with control plus alt plus j.
I'm probably missing something.

Re: Putting Jaws to sleep

Matthew Horspool <mhorspool@...>

Hi,

There are two advantages:

1. Sleep Mode only applies to specific applications (unless you've applied
it to the default file, of course). As such, if a window from another
application pops up over the top, JAWS will automatically come back up.
This is particularly useful if the window doesn't make a sound.

2. You actually only need to set this behavior up in Settings Centre once -
JAWS will remember to unload itself automatically when that application
gains focus from then on.

Press your applications key (or SHIFT+F10) when focussed on the option in
Quick Settings. You should land in a context menu where you can set the
percistence of the setting - move to 'Save the Setting' and press ENTER to
check it.

If, when pressing the applications key, you only see an option that says 'Go
to Setting in Tree', press ENTER on this and repeat the process.

If this doesn't work, you will need to go through the Options/Voices/Voice
Adjustment... dialog as another lister described.

Subject: Re: reading numbered lists in Word 2003

Hi Brian,

You can try any of the following ways to turn automatic numbering off.

Open the tools menu with alt T and press ENTER on "autocorrect".
Press CTRL-TAB to access the "autoformat as you type" tab.
Arrow down and uncheck "automatic bulleted lists" and "automatic
numbered lists".
Enter on okay.
You can also hit the backspace at the beginning of the line it
auto numbered or auto lettered to remove it and temporarily turn
off automatic number and lettering.
Another way;

Go to the Format menu by pressing the Alt key then right arrow to format or
by pressing applications key and arrow down to
Bullets and Numbering; hit
enter. Control tab till you hear "Numbered" and then tab once and choose
"None." Tab to Apply and OK.

Another way;
To get rid of bullets and numbers, do alt. O for Format and arrow twice to
bullets and numbers. Hit enter and select None and tab to OK.

Another way;

1. with Word open, go to the menu bar right arrow to format and down to
auto format and press enter.
2. tab to an options button press enter. This opens a multiple page
dialog box. Listen closely as it opens up. I think it will open on the
autoformat
tab, press control and tab and this switches the pages and listen for
"replace as you type". 3. Now tab through this list. One of the check
boxes
is Automatic
number lists. Uncheck this, tab to okay, again tab to okay and I think
this
will fix the auto numbering.
Hope 1 of these helped. Take care.

Does anyone know why when I type a numbered list in Word 2003, JAWS reads
a
number that isn't there? I think there is an autonumbering going on.

When I type the first item in the list, put a period, then hit enter, if I
type "2" and the next item, then read the list, I hear the "1" in the
first
item, but arrowing down, I hear "1" then "2) on the same line and don't
know
if both those numbers are really there. Reading backwards with the left
arrow, I only hear the "2" and not the "1" that was automatically typed on
the second line. Also, there is a fairly long delay in reading each
letter
of a word using the arrow key. This will really slow down my production
if
/ when I get the job doing medical transcription with Houston Lighthouse.

By the way, I thought Adobe Acrobat had a built in OCR feature for "empty
documents." About 6 years ago, I got the full version of Adobe Acrobat,
not
just the free reader, so, maybe the OCR is just with the full version.
Seems like there should be an OCR with the free reader too though. Before
that, I was using Paper Port for OCR, but I've lost too much vision now to
navigate Paper Port, and the last version I got was much more complicated,
so I stopped using it for scanning books, etc.

Also, I've had issues with JAWS 13 reading the long digests from JFW,
getting stuck on a word and just repeating it every time I hit the down
arrow. Using the up arrow then down arrow again sometimes starts reading
normally again.

Thanks,
Brian

Re: Putting Jaws to sleep

Ed,

One thing that putting JAWS to sleep allows one to do is to use a braille
display without speech. This is useful in a program like Kurzweil or a
braille translator.

Re: Putting Jaws to sleep

Marquette, Ed <Ed.Marquette@...>

Is that "sleep" different from using Insert plus F-4? I know the latter actually shuts JAWS down, but it seems quicker and easier than going to the Settings Center. Just wondering what advantages there are of using "sleep" over just unloading JAWS and restarting again with control plus alt plus j.
I'm probably missing something.

Hi,

Bring up settings center (jaws+6), type 'sleep' in the search box and
then arrow down to the sleep mode selection and enable it.

F6 doesn't take me to the status line. The only thing that happens
when I hit f6 in a word document is I hear "document pane."

Hi,

I tried the key combination of Control+Shift+G but didn't understand
what
the panel that popped up had to do with the word count in Word?

Hi Curtis & Kimber,

While in a Word document, try the keystroke control, shift, + G.

You can also try the following;
1. While in the Word document you want the word count from, press Alt +
T,
for tools, arrow down to Word Count, & press enter.
2. Route the Jaws cursor to the PC cursor & press the page up button /
key.
3. Arrow down 1 line at a time to get the word count & several other
statistics for this document.

Hope this helped. Take care.
Mike

I have the same problem and have gone back to version 12 because of
it. The only other "solution" I have is to read the word count info
with the jaws cursor. It's a pain but gets the job done.

This is an issue that FS really needs to address.
