actually, research-it should be completely removed from jaws in my
openion because of the fact you mentioned. i never use it and is
really taking up precious time by the programmers fixing something
that will never be stable and should use that time in fixing real
bugs in the screen reader portion of the software. my two centws
worth and this isn't bashing SF just stating the truth.

JFW Listers,

I sent this out to the address

suggestions@freedomscientific.com

I wanted to let them know how I felt about ResearchIt and the way they
were
implementing fixes to it. If you feel so inclined to send them similar
suggestions, I think they need a little adjustment to their strategy.

My message:

I was momentarily using my copy of JAWS 12 and went to use ResearchIt. It
occurred to me that when using a backdated copy of JAWS, some of the
ResearchIt fixes carried in later updates were not there.

Since ResearchIt is so impacted by underlying web sites to work properly,
it
is by nature something that will need to be updated and patched
frequently -- quite similar to the scripts we all use in JAWS.

So my question/suggestion is this: For the benefit of those who are not
current, and in keeping with the capability of scripts to be updated
irrespective of the version being used, why aren't ResearchIt patches
released separately so that they can be applied to any version of JAWS
that
shipped with ResearchIt? That seems to make sense from two perspectives:

1. Customers are not forced to be stuck with a non-functioning ResearchIt
when their only recourse is to pay for an update to a newer major version,
and
2. Freedom Scientific need not roll out an update simply due to a need to
patch ResearchIt, thus allowing separate development of patches to follow
their own release schedule.

Please give this some consideration.

Re: Copying text from a dialogue box

Tom Lange

Hi Cliff,
You wrote:

It seems to me this was just addressed on the list but I didn't need it then. Is there a way to copy text from a Windows XP dialogue box onto the clipboard?
Certainly. What you want to do is to virtualize the current window, which will place it in the Virtual Viewer, at which time you can then do a select all and copy everything to the clipboard.

Here's the explanation from the JAWS Help system.

Virtualize Window
The Virtualize Window (INSERT+ALT+W) feature captures everything in the current application window. This includes the static text that appears in the window, so that you can avoid trying to recall something to type into a message in order to communicate it to others such as support staff. This is a great way to capture error codes and dialog messages since the text can easily be copied into an e-mail message.

Try the following example to see how this works:

1.. Press INSERT+F4. The Quit JAWS dialog box appears.
2.. Next, press INSERT+ALT+W. The dialog box title, message, and command buttons appears in the virtual viewer, for example:
"Quit JAWS
Are you sure you want to quit JAWS? Press Enter to quit now, or Escape to cancel.
OK Cancel"
3.. To select and copy the contents of the virtual viewer, press CTRL+A then CTRL+C.
4.. You can now open your e-mail application and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of the virtual viewer into your e-mail message.
Hope this helps.

Tom

Adrian,

Oh, don't you love exiting out of that nag message? But it's a small price
to pay for them making this available free to all of us, not just WE users.
I use it very rarely, just because those I communicate with don't use it,
but I have it for those od occasions. A very nice effort on the part of GW

Yes, I have made it simple to keep updated with the latest scripts so no
more announcements need to be made. If you are out of date, it will
automatically initiate the download for you. If you are fine, there are no
nags or pop up wihndows.
Download it here:

Hi Adrian,

Can you tell me what key the hyphen key would be? Is that the same as
apostrophe? That's the same key with the quote character on it.

Re: Adobe Reader X

Adrian Spratt

Katen,

David Whitehead posted the following directions to make Adobe X work with
JAWS.

1, open adobe X,
2, press ctrl+k=preferences,
3, now press the letter "g"=general,
4, now tab and Uncheck, Enable Protected Mode at startup
You need to change another setting so, tab until you have General
highlighted again.
5. With General highlighted, press the letter I, until you have Internet
highlighted.
6. Tab to, Display PDF in browser, if this box is checked press the spacebar
to uncheck it.
7. Tab to the okay button, press enter to close preferences & save your
changes, & press Alt + F4 to close Adobe.

Note. The lister David was answering posted this follow-up, which I include
in case it also helps.

Thanks for THE VERY HELPFUL INFO. BECAUSE OF THIS, I FOUND OUT THAT SOMEHOW
ADOBE HADN'T BEEN RECOGNIZED AS MY DEFAULT PDF READER. BUT IF I HADN'T BEEN
CHECKING THE STUFF YOU HAD SUGGESTED, I WOULD NEVER HAD FOUND THE DEFAULT
PDF READER BUTTON. IT SEEMS THAT IT HAD NEVER BEEN INSTALLED OR AT LEAST NOT
PROPERLY. AFTER HAVING INSTALLING OR REINSTALLING IT, ALL WORKS JUST FINE.

Folks,

I'll start off this message with an appology. Things have been a little more
than slightly crazy over here in the non-interner world, and that's kept me
off the internet at large for a bit. Unfortunately, our other moderator took
this time to be equally inactive, which left you folks to fend for
yourselves. Ordinarily that's not a bad thing, but we appear to have a few
people who seem to have forgotten what this list is here for. I have,
however, returned to active status and will be bringing in at least one
moderator more in the very near future. As for right now, it's time to get
the list back on track, and off the anything goes policy you folks seem to
have decided is appropriate for the list. If it's not related to JAWS for
Windows, you will be warned. Once. Then you will be moderated. If it
continues, you will be removed. Let's sort this mess out, soonishly please.
In the meantime, keep your eyes pealed--the new moderator will be brought in
to help out here sometime this week.
