Well, interestingly, they re-set my activation count to 3, and I already have Jaws going on this computer, so next week may tell the story.

Why does anyone need more than one or two computers for personal use? The people who run into problems with their activation counts seem to own a zillion computers. This is absurd. Any blind computer user who owns more than two computers deserves to be scrutinized by FS.

Steve, a small objection from one who has requested new activations only
twice in nearly two decades. Agreed, requesting a lot of activations could
indicate usage outside the terms of our agreement with FS. However, it's
clear that many people here need activations for reasons to do with the
number of systems they have, the hardware upgrades they install, the
occasional mistakes they make, and so on. FS has a right to protect its
revenue source, but it does come at a cost to customers of the unrestricted

Hi, all.

I'm between computers here, and have a question about Jaws activation
counts.

I know I could call FS about this, but figured I might get a quicker
answer from the list.

Regarding activations, does a single-license Jaws user like myself
have a given number of activations for each separate version of Jaws,
or is the allotted number of 3 activations constant across all
versions of Jaws collectively?

I am getting a couple of new computers set up for both office and
home, and

am trying to figure out how best to proceed, while still keeping an
older Windows XP machine around as a back-up in case that is needed as
well.

I have Jaws 12, but a few earlier versions of Jaws that I could
probably use if neded, if that would give me more activations to work
with.

Thanks!

Tom,

I've always found it advantageous to re-create this shortcut for any new
version. Like many JAWS users, I have a few versions on my system because
later ones broke what previously worked. Each time I install a new version
(i.e., 10, 11, 12), I assign the j shortcut to it and reassign other
shortcuts to older versions.

Hi, again.

I just thought of one more question here.

What is the best way to transfer the Alt Control J shortcut to Jaws 12 from
Jaws 11, when doing the upgrade process?

I seem to recall having a problem with this once before in earlier upgrades,
and can't remember how to resolve it.

All I remember is that I had great difficulty transferring the shortcut over
to the new version of Jaws from the earlier version.

I would have thought that the "merge utilities" function would have taken
care of this, but it didn't in my earlier upgrade efforts.

Thanks for putting up with all my questions lately.

Hi Tom,

There is no need to transfer the alt, control, + J, keystroke. That is the
default shortcut keystroke for all versions of Jaws. What you need to do is
go to the Jaws12 context menu / options / basics and check the box to have
Jaws12 start automatically. By checking this box in any version of Jaws,
tells Jaws to use this particular keystroke as the shortcut keystroke. Hope
this helps. Take care.

However, I have one more question about the activation process:

If I upgrade from Jaws 11 to Jaws 12 on a computer that already has Jaws 11,
does the upgrade count against my number of available activations? In other
words, each time I upgrade from Jaws 11 to 12, do I loose an activation?

Thank you so much for throwing this suggestion out there!! It actually works, at least when editing Wordpress pages in HTML mode... I haven't tried it for those other instances where I'm encountering application mode, but it solves my problem in this most important instance!

Hi Kim,

Another thing you can try in this situation is invoking the keystroke, Jaws
Key + Z. This toggles the virtual cursor key between off & auto. This is
only a suggestion. I am not sure if this will help, but is worth a try.
Take care.

Hi Adrian and Mike,

Well, unfortunately, Mike, your method didn't work for me... yes,
applications mode would, in fact, go off, but keeps coming back on the next
time I try to move my cursor or enter a key command. Thanks so much for
trying, though! I really appreciate it. *smile*

Adrian, I sadly must agree with you regarding inconsistent methods here...
I've tried everything, but to no real avail. I appreciate knowing that 11
seems to illiminate this issue, at least for you... very good to know.

I apppreciate hearing about your experiences... they mirror mine, at least
as far as Jaws 10 goes. Anyway, thanks so much!

Folks,
If the quotes are useful to enough people, I'll work on a qry file for ResearchIt, to pull the quotes from a more...stable...source, such as Google's backend.
I'd appreciate a shout off-list if you would wish me to work on this, and have it presentable by the end of the weekend.

Re: Transferring Alt Control J shortcut from Jaws 11 to Jaws 12

Adrian Spratt

In my case I haven't had as many activations as FS claims. I only use JAWS
on both of my PCs and no where else. The only times I've had activations has
been when I've restored my PC back and fitted new hardware. Some of the
times I've restored my PC back has been due to issues with JAWS and trying
to resolve them. A more sensible approach from FS would be to have JAWS send
once a day a message to FS giving the IP address of the computer then they
would be able to see that it was being used in the location it was intended
for and wouldn't be an issue. For those who don't want FS to have that
information they can just remain as they are.

We pay a lot of money for the software to say the least. I appreciate FS
want to protect themselves from piracy but I am sure that such a strict
policy on activations is what has caused some to go down the route of piracy
(mine is a fully paid for version and I do not condone piracy in the
slightest).

FS has a right to protect its
revenue source, but it does come at a cost to customers of the
unrestricted

I am getting a couple of new computers set up for both office and
home, and

am trying to figure out how best to proceed, while still keeping an
older Windows XP machine around as a back-up in case that is needed as
well.

I have Jaws 12, but a few earlier versions of Jaws that I could
probably use if neded, if that would give me more activations to work
with.

Thanks!

Re: Transferring Alt Control J shortcut from Jaws 11 to Jaws 12

Mike & Barbara In Arcadia <mb69mach1@...>

Hope
this helps. Take care.

I have a dongle because this is the only option with the Hebrew version of

I can transfer the dongle freely from one computer to the other without
anything.

Anyone else having trouble with Thunderbird now?

nikkib@mbrowncc.com <nikkib@...>

Hi everyone,

I have been using Thunderbird with JAWS 12 for a while and it was working fine up until one of the more recent Thunderbird updates. Now, when I am in my inbox, JAWS will not read the message descriptions to me. (who it's from, the subject, etc.). Instead, all it will read is the header over the list of e-mails. It says something like"starred, attachment, subject, read, status, date). It says this over and over as I scroll up and down through the list of messages in my inbox. I have to switch to NVDA to be able to accurately hear what e-mail I have.

Does anyone else know what might be wrong and how I can fix it?

Thanks!
Nikki B.

Ken,

Dave Carlson gave you clear instructions on how to stop JAWS from
verbalizing "bulk" in this context. Yes, it's annoying, but no one's
intentionally doing it to you and the fix is so simple.

As he later says, go ahead and have your ISP reject these messages as spam.
You'll miss a lot of good advice, but maybe for you that 's a small price.

I am a bit distressed about FS's approach to the activation issue, since
we
all paid good money for various versions of Jaws over the years, but I
guess
that's the name of the game in the softwre design world today.

I used to do it over the website but FS once advised me that since I'm in
the UK, taking in to account time difference, public holidays etc it would
be best to contact my local distributor Sight and Sound. The last time
Sight and Sound went to reset my activations they were told by FS that
they couldn't do it. I then rang FS from the UK and had a debate with the
person on the helpdesk and she reset my activation but only to 1, not 3.

I'm finding so much more that NVDA is working better with than JAWS that
now I really won't be upgrading any further with JAWS after my SMA runs
out. I also intend to take up all my issues with FS.

Hmm, they have now refused to reset mine to more than one at a time.
They claim I have had 33 activations in a few months. Can't think where
they get that figure from and very annoying. I'm in the process of
raising it as a complaint. They tried to sell me a dongle licence
instead.

They are nice, but don't ask more than once every few months. If you're
down
to 1 they will sometimes bump you back up to 3. But no more than 3.

Subject: Question on activation count

Hi, all.

I'm between computers here, and have a question about Jaws activation
counts.

I know I could call FS about this, but figured I might get a quicker
answer
from the list.

Regarding activations, does a single-license Jaws user like myself have
a
given number of activations for each separate version of Jaws, or is
the
allotted number of 3 activations constant across all versions of Jaws
collectively?

I am getting a couple of new computers set up for both office and
home,
and

am trying to figure out how best to proceed, while still keeping an
older
Windows XP machine around as a back-up in case that is needed as well.

I have Jaws 12, but a few earlier versions of Jaws that I could
probably
use if neded, if that would give me more activations to work with.

Thanks!

Tom from Michigan

Well, Peter, I just completed the activation re-set form, so will
hopefully learn the outcome soon.

Subject: one more Jaws Activation question

Hello again, everyone.

I successfully convinced the folks at FS to re-set my activation count back
to 3, so it looks like I am now all set in that regard.

However, I have one more question about the activation process:

If I upgrade from Jaws 11 to Jaws 12 on a computer that already has Jaws 11,
does the upgrade count against my number of available activations? In other
words, each time I upgrade from Jaws 11 to 12, do I loose an activation?

Thanks!
