Uh John, are you part of the beta test team? I bet you won't be for long.
Still though, that was interesting reading. Many will be glad to see the Excel problems receiving attention, finally!

It won't work with the JAWS 12 authorization anyway so it won't work. You have to wait for the beta anyway.

Out of stupidity, I gave you all a link I wasn't supposed to. I thought it
was already common knowledge.
Please do not, I repeat, do not download anything off there as it could get
someone in trouble.
Thank you very much.
Just wait the extra time for the beta to be released which is only a few
days.

I didn't download, mostly because I don't have a separate machine for testing. But, many probably will download.

I'm totally serious, at least that's what the JAWS site says. It works with graphical text and they used a setup file to demonstrate it. I'm trying to find out more, but there isn't much info about it now. Guess I'll find out next week.

Peter, there's nothing stopping you or others with not as much money from getting Abby Finereader or some other OCR program menat for the general computer user, not specifically designed for blind people. Sure, they aren't as elegant or taylored just for our needs, but they're a lot less expensive.

Since when does FS care about giving its customers a break? Why would FS want to charge, say, $1500 for a program that combines the best features of JAWS and Open Book into a single package, when they can charge $1000 for each program individually? It's all about the bottom line.

Re: Jaws 13 out next week

John Martyn

The OCR function in JAWS 13 is a way to get at that graphical text in programs. It isn't a document reader. It will grab small bits of text that you can actually interact with such as that flash update window that everyone gets. You should be able to read the buttons with this and click the right one once it is done reading the screen.
That's just one practical purpose. Now if you could script it, that would be amazing.

Re: Jaws 13 out next week

Gary King

George,
If the new JAWS 13 feature reads graphical text on your computer screen, as it appears to do from John Martin's description of it interacting with a setup program, then it won't be competing with Open Book or Kurzweil 1000. It will just be helpful for accessing those computer programs that label their controls with graphics rather than actual text.

I looked on the FS web site, but couldn't find the demo. I'm sure it will be in the September FS Cast, but if it is available now, I would be interested to know where it can be found.

How would that be an ideal world? People already say JAWS is too bloted.
That'd just give them more reason to say so.

I wouldn't get too excited about this alleged OCR option. After all, if it
were really useful, it might detract from sales of Open Book, which is the
last thing FS wants to happen. In an ideal world, JAWS and Open Book would
be merged into a single program, but, of course, that's only wishful
thinking.

Re: Jaws 13 out next week

Gerald Levy

I wouldn't get too excited about this alleged OCR option. After all, if it were really useful, it might detract from sales of Open Book, which is the last thing FS wants to happen. In an ideal world, JAWS and Open Book would be merged into a single program, but, of course, that's only wishful thinking.

John, I don't think the OCR function means much to many of us who have OpenBook or Kurzweil.

I like the OCR functions Jaws will have. I wonder if that portion is scriptable. That would be so awesome.

Hi all,
I will be among the beta testers out there. Is anyone else going to try out the beta that comes out next week? I have to since I write scripts. Does anyone have a list of changes they are making with JAWS 13?
Thanks in advanced,
John Martyn

Re: Why do people have so many problems unsubscribing on this list?

Brandon Keith (Biggs) <brandonboy13@...>

Exactly!
My key stroke command is about as ridiculous as the hundreds of "Please unsubscribe me!" emails I've gotten from this one list.
And that Google search idea sounds like what I need! LOL It might not be so far fetched as it seems...
We'll just use ctrl+shift+u+n+6+home+escape as our new "Unsubscribe command. That should keep people quiet :)...
Thanks,

Brandon, sorry but your unsubscribe key command idea is rediculous. I hope you were kidding! *LOL* If that was your intent, great; really funny post! While we're at it, let's add a function that, every time it senses someone typing the phrase "How do I". Once detected, the Jaws voice could then pipe up and say "did you check online help and the web first?"

OH, and of course we need a single keystroke to fire up google and somehow read your mind and determine what you are trying to find out, type it into the Google search box, and then take you to the best search result, all automatically. Of course, such a mind reading function would have to filter out all the "oh god please don't punish me, you are all wondrous and knowing", and "oh dear, how many calories are in this?" and other such mental musings.

People just need to either 1. make a note of how they joined the list in the first place, or 2. keep the instructional email sent to them when they joined, or 3. read the bottom of every freaking post to the list and follow the link.

If you can operate a keyboard, surely you can engage your brain enough to do one of those things.

It amuses me that most of these "you must unsubscribe me now or else" tantroms come from people in the USA, where being able to look after oneself is a prised political principle. Get the government out of my life, but oh, if only they could unsubscribe me from the list...

That initial email from the list when you join usually contains a phrase like "keep this in a safe place, it's important! You may wish to refer to it later!" I guess nobody actually does that.

Chris

At 06:37 PM 9/9/2011, you wrote:
It has just been on this list where I've received hundreds of emails dealing with unsuscribing... Maybe it would be a good and valuable thing if FS made a key command to unsubscribe from a mailing list. It would have to be rather complex, but I think It would be worth FS's investment because it appears so many Jaws users have problems unsubscribing from Email lists.
Either that or could the Admins please block all emails that come into this list that contain the word "Subscribe*"?
Thank you,
