It wouldn't be any more realtime than, say, running Open Book, if what I've
heard is any indication. You still need to activate it on a case by case
basis. And it's got probably less to recognize than Open Book would, which
should, in theory, mean less system resources used. Of course it's equally
possible I just have no clue.

Gerald,

That would be one of the first of a significant step in the direction of
accessibility that FS has done in a long time. I sure hope your surmise is
correct.

I just hope that the horsepower of today's processors and memory is able to
cope with the strain of doing "on-the-fly" OCR in real time.

I read about the new OCR feature in JAWS 13 that will supposedly convert
text contained within unlabeled web page graphics into speech. I'm
wondering whether this OCR function will be able to solve image captchas.
If so, it would really be a significant improvement. Any thoughts?

I have become confused by the mass of posts on this subject so much so,I
seek clarification please, is jaws 13 out this week or not please. More
importantly regardless of whether we have bought jaws 13, are the issues
relating to jaws 12 to be fixed first. I think if fs wants happy users this
assurance needs to be given rapidly, can do without the sporting fixtures
just fix one verson now do not want to hear buy another update to get
it,surely this mustbe seen as reasonable by fs? dorothy

HI Bob,

Are you running Jaws from the system tray? If so, windows key + J, is the
incorrect keystroke. You need to use Insert / Jaws key + J, to get to the
Jaws window. If you arre using Jaws key + J, & happened to type windows key
+ J, by accident, I don't have an answer for you, & hopefully someone will
have the answer & help both of us. Take care.

Hi, I cant test this at the moment, but by the sound of it you have
nothing
to loos.
Im asuming that windows is still starting up ok?
if so go to the program files folder & to Freedom Scientific & coppy the 2
folders, Activator, & Authorization Coppy them onto a flash stick or
external drive.
If it wont let you coppy them, you may need to stop jaws from starting on
reboot & use NVDA to coppy them.

after you reinstall the system, re install jaws & I would suggest you set
jaws not to start automaticly & then reboot, then use NVDA to coppy the 2
folders you coppied before back into the Freedom Scientific folder over
writing the existing ones.

As I said havent tested this but because you are reinstalling your system
with out any hardware or OS changes this may work, & you wont need to use
another auth key.

Good luck,
let me know how you go.

Re: Will Jaws read a Kindle book that's not text to speech enabled?

Gary King

Matthew,
Kindle for PC with Accessibility Plugin will read books with its built-in text-to-speech even though text-to-speech has been disabled by the authors. In order for this to happen, an external screen reader must be running. They tested JAWS and NVDA. The screen readers reads the menus and controls, and the built-in text-to-speech reads the content of the book. JAWS cannot read any text in the book.

If the book is available in the Blio bookstore, you may have better luck. JAWS can read the content of a book in the Blio EBook Reader.

JAWS can also read protected Epub books with Adobe Digital Editions 1.8 Preview, not to be confused with other versions of Adobe Digital Editions. You may want to check to see if the book is available in that format.

Hello, according to various reviews of the Kindle app for pc with the accessibility, if the text to speech isn't enabled on a certain book, Jaws should read the text. I'm concerned, because if the text to speech is enabled, then I can't turn it off and let Jaws read the book in my preferred voice. I also can't arrow up and down through the text. So will I indeed get the text read to me if I buy the new Stephen King short story called Mile 81? The page says that text to speech isn't enabled, but I don't want to spend the three dollars if Jaws won't read it, and take the chance that Amazon may not give back the money. The link for this story is here:

Also, if there's some way to turn off the tts and let Jaws read from the Kindle app all the time, I'd like to find that out, although Amazon says it can't be done.
Thanks.
