Understanding Key Lables

Darran Ross <darran.ross@...>

Hi List.

Using version 14 here, and my question is about the Managing of Key Labels. I'd like to understand what keys actually do, but I haven't been able to find any information on this particular aspect.

For example, I don't like hearing JAWS announce Delete each and every time I delete an email, and I thought that I'd found something that might achieve this when I discovered in the Key Labels area of the Settings Centre a key labeled "DeleteDelete". However, switching this to mute doesn't make any difference at all to the delete announcements!

Can anyone tell me what this DeleteDelete key actually is? And, is there a way for me to achieve the silencing of the delete announcements when getting rid of emails?

Sorry, if this is garbled, but hope enough of it makes sense to get my query across!

Regards.

Darran

moving messages in outlook 10 & laptop key issues

Tusing <ptusing@...>

Hi, all,
I want to thank those who wrote regarding moving messages between Outlook
versions toOutlook 10. The idea is to keep 2 computers
Up-to-date in terms of e-mail messages.
Since the Outlook 10 computer "receives" the messages--all this courtesy of
the
Chicago Lighthouse who were so fantastic with their info--one finds
Outlook.pstand one renames it to outlook.bak.
Then one imports the
Outlook1.pst messages from the earlier versioninto the outlook
2010---avoiding the need to "set as default".

If something goes wrong, one still has the
Outlook.bak
Folder.

All this can be done without creating duplicate e-mail messages all over
the place.

Per the second topic,
I read Mr. Marquette's comments on the Lenovo laptop with the
Reassigned function keys F1-3 and the disabled insert key.

I found the same thing in terms of Hewlett Packard only that the numpad off
key was disabled and also "all" the function keys were reassigned to their
own weird functions.

A similar issue in terms of the disabled insert key occurred with Fujitsu
computers with full keyboards.

Only Acer had no reassigned keys.

Peoplehadwritten me so I have answered.

Hi All,

Since updating to Adobe XI I have been problems reading .pdf files that I normally wouldn't have an issue with. I noticed Adobe XI has a little different settings layout. Would someone please post settings that work best with Jaws? Apparrently my Adobe X settings aren't working very well.
All help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks much.

Hi Lauren,

From my understanding you will need Jaws 14 to use Windows8. Someone that

Take care.

A question about a USB external sound card, and JAWS

Allen Childs <iowaguy@...>

Hi all,
I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving. I am currently using JAWS 13,
current build, XP Home, SP 3. It has a Soundmax integrated digital audio
sound card.
The problem I can't seem to get fixed, when I type sometimes JAWS will
hesitate, then say the letter, or when selecting, or reading a line of text,
and JAWS will even stop talking. I then have to restart the computer to get
it talking again.
On Wednesday I spent over an hour with a tech from FS. She did a
tandem, and suggested upgrading the video card. The last update was
February, 2009. I downloaded the latest update, which was just last month.
The last update for the Soundmax, was 2003. My wife looked for a newer
update, but none seem to be available.
The tech from FS, wasn't sure if a USB sound card would, help, but said
it might. Does anyone here have any thoughts on the subject?
I will appreciate all suggestions.

Re: text size in WLM

dave grossoehme

Good Morning: You might be able to change the text size by changing what
font you are using? I don't use that application very often, so, I can't
tell you where that option can be found. Another option to try is write
your messages in notepad and copy them into your email messages and see what
response you are given.

Hi,
I have read through the WLM guide with Jaws.

I could not find any informatiion on chaning the default font size in WLM.

I have been told that my messages have very small text.

I have tried finding a way to correct this.

I used the auto graphics labeller to see if that would make more selections
available to Jaws, but no luck.

If someone has an answer please let me know.

Also, I am still having a lot of difficulty with this program, and wonder if
there is another email list that might be albe to provide some help.

Did Microsoft turn a pack of squirrels loose to design this program?

Re: on mouseover

Tom Lange

Hi,
Unless this changed with JAWS 14, ctrl+insert+enter oughta do it.

It's been my experience that onmouseovers as shown in the Surf's Up tutorial from FS work pretty well, but out in the wild, meaning on the Internet as a whole, JAWS can't detect changes when using that keystroke combo, at least more often than not. Perhaps that's because the changes are mainly graphical and incapable of being detected.

Re: Outlook 2010 and Conversation View

paul lemm

Hi,

It annoyed me for ages as I couldn't get it to work how I wanted . I can't
take any credit though for fixing it as it was another member from this list
'kimson' who showed me how to. Below are the details of the settings to
change. It sounds a little long winded but well worth it in my opinion, and
it only takes about a minute once you've done it once before:

First make sure you are in the folder you would like to make the change, go
to view menu and select show as conversation.

Go to the view menu (alt V) and tab to view settings then tab and space bar.
Note: if you have jaws virtual ribbons on to find view settings you need to
go to view menu cursor down to current view, press right arrow to expand
this menu then cursor down to find view settings.

Next tab to "description group by" and press enter or spacebar.
There will be a choice that says automatically group according to arangement
and by default is checked, uncheck it.
Press your tab key and you will be in a combo box, expand it with alt down
arrow Press C until you hear "conversation" of course without the quotes. I
think it is normally already set to this
Tab to the combo box where it says "expand collapse defaults"
and if it says last viewd, up arrow and place it on all collapse.
We are finished here, so now tab to the ok button and press spacebar.
Now tab to the description sort button and press spacebar. The first thing
you should land on is a drop down box "sort items by" and press "S" until
you land on subject. Tabbing once Now finish it out by tabbing to ok and
there will be another ok as well to press spacebar on and then you are done

Hope it works, i have no idea why microsoft made it so difficult but once
you've done it once its straight forward if you need to do it again. I've
found it so much easier managing all my emails since.

Re: Windows 8 with Jaws?

Marquette, Ed <Ed.Marquette@...>

Claudia:
JAWS works just fine with Windows 8, though I have not tried it much with the "modern apps" all that much. I've been using a Windows 8 computer for about a week.
JAWS does not, at present, support touch gestures, but apart from that, it works fine.
The only problem I've found is the tendency of sighted programmers to minimize the importance of the top row function keys and the insert key. For instance, on my UltraBook, some designer thought it would be cute to make F-1 mute sound, F-2 reduce volume, and F-3 increase volume. All this despite the presence of a hardware switch for volume control on the side of the laptop. To get these function keys and the insert key to work, sort of, in the standard way, one is supposed to press a separate function key. What a disaster! Plus, JAWS doesn't work with that configuration at all.
The above is more a hardware problem than a Windows 8 problem. Fortunately, there is a bios switch to flip the functions of these keys back.
When buying a new computer, beware of sighted designers trying to get cute with keyboards.
