Re: Blackboard

Stephanie Switzer

Have you tried contacting your school's tecnology department or whatever it's called? Also did you have an earlier version of jaws installed? If so, did it work? I'm asuming that you did, and that it worked fine. However, you may want to point that out if you choose to email them about it. You can also try using firefox. I don't know why, but sometimes black board and ie don't get along.

can't edit text in excel 2010

paul lemm

Hi,

I've just upgraded to office 2010 at work. In excel 2010 when I go to a
cell with text in and press F2 to edit the text, jaws wont read any of the
text in that cell, it is as if it is blank and pressing the cursor keys
left and right to scroll through the text in that cell moves the cursor
through the text but jaws is not reading anything.

Has anyone got any solutions?

Thanks in advance

Paul lemm

Subject: Problems with certain pages in Firefox 18.0.1 and Jaws

Hello list,

So recently I upgraded Firefox to the latest build (18.0.1) and ever since
then, I've been encountering issues when visiting certain webpages with Jaws
(JFW 14).

When I go to a page either through my favorites or Google reader or clicking
through from a web search, Jaws ats as though it gets stuck on that page and
there's nothing I can do to fix it. I always have to resort to killing the
Firefox process from within the task manager. PayPal is an example of this
for me.

I don't have this particular problem when visiting these same website
through IE 9. So my inclination is to believe that it has to do with
something related to this particular version of Firefox as this issue wasn't
present in earlier versions either.

I thought that it maybe had something to do with the Flash plugin as
sometimes by killing that process in the task manager the webpage will
unfreeze on me, but that doesn't' seem to help in this instance.

Can anyone else comment on whether they too have delt with this problem
since upgrading to Firefox 18.0.1 and what they may have done to fix or work
around this issue? That aside, does anyone know where I can get a hold of a
previous build of Firefox?

Thanks,

I have exactly the same issue. I open firefox and my whole computer
freezes. I just have to reset my pc and with IE9 I don't have any
issues.

The table in gmail issue may be one from JFW. From the days when I used to

You may not have any choice in the matter, because, some manufacturers, like HP, swich off the ability to change the behaviour of the function keys within Windows, so you have to do it within the BIOS.

Claudia,

There is likely a key on that keyboard called the Fn key. It is often on the left side adjacent to the control key. If you press it along with the Alt key and then F4 the exit command will work. The function keys have, on many new laptops, been assigned to other functions, like play and volume controls, etc. this means that if you want toe use the common commands on the row of function keys you have to have that Fn key pressed along with Ctrl or Alt or Jaws key.

Has anyone here ever found a way, using the Bios to change this on laptops that behave this way? It is quite inconvenient.

The only problem is that when you are starting the computer, there is no way for someone who is totally blind able to tell if the BIOS screen has been loaded, even if you wait some time and windows does not start.

Did the technician from the computer company, show you how to do want you wanted in Windows or did he/she walk you through the steps within the BIOS, assuming that the BIOS loaded?

What Brand and model number is your laptop?

If it is an HP laptop, you will need to get someone who can see, to go into
the BIOS and change the option, which deals with how the function keys are
set up, from Multimedia to Standard Function key behaviour.

If you do not have anyone sighted who can do this for you, take the laptop
back to the store and ask them to do it for you.

Once the change has been made, you will be able to use the function keys in
the usual way.

Hi,

Before you try out Google Chrome you should know there problems ahead for
you if you install Chrome on your computer. Last year I had an application
force install Chrome on my computer during an installation. When I went to
remove Chrome it left my registry all screwed up. In the end the only thing
that would put my computer back to working mode was a system restore that I
had created some days before. My advice try it out if you want just make a
system restore point so you can restore your registry if you want to get
read of Chrome. If you already have Chrome never remove it from your
computer. If you do a Google search you'll see they've been having a problem
with Chrome and the registry since 2009.

Hi. Dondi just posted his response as I was searching for another lister's
comment from last September. Here's what Soronel Haetir wrote:

I just installed chroam today and can confirm that it now works far better
than it used to. This is on a 64 bit win7 pro sp1 system with the latest
version of jaws.

There are still plenty of annoying little things (for instance, the list of
emails on the gmail page is not recognized as a table, whether that is a
chroam thing or a jaws thing I haven't looked into) but I could see them
being minor enough that someone could actually use chroam now (which was not
the case the last time I tried it).

and so far I've had no problem with Google Chrome. There are a couple of
things that are not fully accessible such as the history, but with an
add-on, it works out okay. Just be sure you have the latest version of
Chrome and it should work fine.
