Re: Running Jaws / Windows on a MacBook Pro

Dave...

Aidan,

I think Cy was just opining that using a fine machine like a MAC to run
Windows is a foolish waste of money. Just buy a PC for less and run Windows.

Otherwise, having the option to run either Windows or the Apple IOS is a
convenience that you're just willing to pay for.

So what does that mean? Are you saying its not wise to run it that
way? You no if microsoft would just care about blind people and
provide a speech instal, then we would be more than happy to boot from
the cd. That is why the vurtual thing rocks.

If using a bootcamp, look under the system tray and set windows to run as
the default when you boot, if you want windows to launch that is by
default.

Hi,

I know it is possible to run Windows using a program called Parallels
on the Mac - my wife has it working on her Imac - she is sighted
though so doesn't have to worry about Jaws.

What is the best way to set things up in order to be able to use
Jaws/Windows on a Macbook Pro? Should I use Parallels or best to
setup a dual boot system?

If best to go dual boot what is the software to set that up?

It would be Windows 7 64 bit that would be setting up and I'm licensed
for Jaws14.

Thanks,

Dale.

Thanks Russell

I will check out the accessible site as well. I'm not good at memorizing
tons of keystroke commands for a program I may only use occasionally. That's
my only beef with The Qube so far. Thanks for recommending the native
Twitter client on the iPhone. I had heard that it wasn't very easy to use,
but that may have changed. I'm still just trying to get my hear around the
whole Twitter thing, so thanks for your tips.

Hi Jean,

I used Twitter a lot a few years ago, but, not so much lately. When I do
use it, I usually access it through a program called Syrinx on my iMac.

On Windows, with Jaws, I use the accessible twitter site at...

http://www.accessibletwitter.com

When you sign into your Twitter account on the accessible twitter site, you
will be asked to allow Easy Chirp to access your Twitter account. Choose to
allow this, and you'll be set to go.

If memory serves, the main Twitter site wasn't all that bad with Jaws
either.

On my iPhone I use "Twitter", which, I think is integrated into IOS 6.

Hope this helps.

Can this be fixed? Is there a new setting somewhere?

Hi Dave,

I'm a bit behind on my email, so apologies for the late response! No, I'm
not speaking from personal experience... I've never tried Windows 8, but,
when I listened to the Freedom Scientific podcast on Jaws 14, I think they
mentioned that one needed Jaws 14 in order to be able to use Windows 8. I
also read others on this list saying the same thing.

I'm just about in the market for a new laptop or netbook, so may soon be
using Windows 8.

Thanks,

Russell,

That's not at all surprising. I presume it's from personal experience?

Windows 8 wasn't available for testing when JAWS 12 was in
construction and revisions I suspect.

Hi,

I don't do a lot as far as music goes on my Mac, so can't comment from experience, but I'm on a Mac mailing list and a lot of folks seem to do well with Garage Band for music. It might be helpful to join a Mac mailing list and ask your music questions there and see what folks say. That way you can make an informed decision.

john,

You bring up good points on the Mac and its upgrades.

However a major disadvantage is access to music and audio production
applications, which Loren specifically mentioned. Sonar is accessible in
Windows with JAWS and other script applications. Power Tools and Cuebase are
not very accessible even at this time, especially in MIDI work.

Of course one has to do their own research, but in my experience the Windows
environment is very accessible to music production and final score
publication using JAWS.

Windows systems are not much cheaper if you include office. But my Macd
experience is limited. But if I had to start over, I would go with the Mac,
the cleaner set up is very nice, no tower. But in a year or two who knows
what will be the best.
Another advantage is anti virus, but if you did internet and email in linux
you would have the same advantage.

John, this is all very well, but Windows systems are cheaper, and in my

Hi Lorin
If you have the choice, I would go with the Mac system. Upgrades and
software are cheap. And once you buy an application, you get the upgrades
with no cost. The last operating system upgrade cost $29. Many totally
blind do well with Voice over, the Mac screen reader. But a more powerful
screen reader is available for the Mac for $250.
For an exttra $100. you can get all the one on one training you want in one
hour sessions for a year.
In our area the training is good, but I saw emails where the training is not
good.
Once you learn it, you will save money, and the hardware seems to be very
drillable.

Hi,

Would Jaws 12 or 13 work with Windows 7 and has anyone used Windows 8 with
Jaws 14?

I have to buy a new laptop and wonder which OS I should buy or switch to an
Apple where I don't have to shell out money for upgrades of software like
Jaws, but can't afford any less accessibility as I am totally blind.

Any advice please, I'd be grateful. Thanks.

Hi Dave,

I'm a bit behind on my email, so apologies for the late response! No, I'm not speaking from personal experience... I've never tried Windows 8, but, when I listened to the Freedom Scientific podcast on Jaws 14, I think they mentioned that one needed Jaws 14 in order to be able to use Windows 8. I also read others on this list saying the same thing.

I'm just about in the market for a new laptop or netbook, so may soon be using Windows 8.

Thanks,

If using a bootcamp, look under the system tray and set windows to run as
the default when you boot, if you want windows to launch that is by

I run w7 ultimate 64 bit and yes the update does mess up Jfw! I would wait
till they get the bugs out for the update . But you could if you have it use
the original JFW14 as this is what I am using as I had to convert back to
it. Now unless you have the latest JFW already downloaded you cannot
download it from the site or do a update from within JFW for JFW as this is
blocked . I don't know how long or when the update will be fix but hear some
time next week! HTH

Hi,

Have just found where the video intercept manager hangs out in the

Why would this be? Any ideas how to fix this because Jaws 14 is just
not reading things properly.

When go back to Jaws13 it will read things though.

Hi,

I have just uninstalled the hotfix and gone back to:

J14.0.918-64bit.exe

However it is playing up with the virtual cursor and IE9 and Outlook
2010.

It just says blank page in IE and won't read emails either.

Has perhaps the video intercept got corrupted but I can't find where
you fix that? Where do I go?

I am on a Windows 7 64 bit machine.

Thanks,
Dale.
