Google brings back several results including Youtube videos when searching for creating accessible pdf forms. I believe you do need a PDF tool and can’t just export a Word form.
Both Adobe Acrobat and CommonLook claim to be able to create accessible PDF forms.
For more complicated forms where JavaScript is used to calculate results, then you might want to look at contacting a company that does this. There are several PDF accessibility contractors in the United States.

Hi all,

I have been having an issue with JAWS 2020 (as well as 2018 and 2021) and Adobe Acrobat Reader DC when completing fillable forms.

Example of structure of document

Heading 1
Paragraph of text
Edit Field
Paragraph of text
List of ten items
Check Box

If I up and down arrow through the .pdf I can read all content with no issue.  Down arrow to the bottom, up arrow to the top with no issue. I can type in the edit field, then leave form modes and down arrow to read the paragraph of text, the list of ten items, and the checkbox label/form field.  If I interact with the checkbox at all, my focus gets hung up on the check box where it constantly announces the checkbox name despite having used my up and down arrow to leave that field. I can go to the desktop and then back to Adobe and it reads perfectly until I interact with the checkbox once again.  NVDA has no issue and neither does Fusion oddly enough.  This issue occurs on my work and personal pc when using JAWS 2020 (2018 and 2021).  If I use other reading commands like word by word I have no issue.  It seems to be line by line reading after interacting with the checkboxes.

Has anyone had this type of focus issue before?

Thank you, Paul! I had figured some of this out, but (as ever) I had forgotten about the existence of the Applications Key and had been switching to the JAWS cursor in order to right click. Your approach is much more straightforward.

I've never used Custom Highlights before and I'm trying to figure out how they work. I've read through the Custom Highlight Colors section of the help file but Custom Highlights are not working the way I would expect.

To test CH I've created a Word document with five paragraphs. The text in each paragraph is a different colour. I go to the fourth paragraph, which is green, and hit:
  • CTRL + INS + H and then enter to "Set foreground and background"
  • Enter again to confirm
  • The "Customer Highlight Options - WORD" dialog appears, and confirms that "SpringGreen3 on white" is set as a Highlight
  • Enter to close the dialog and return to Word
According to the help file, "Once assigned, text matching the color(s) you have specified is treated as highlighted by JAWS. For example, SaySelectedText (INSERT+SHIFT+DOWN ARROW) reads Custom Highlights you have assigned." When I hit INS + SHIFT + DOWN, I would expect JAWS to read out the green text, but it doesn't: instead, it just says "nothing selected".

What am I doing wrong?

Thank you John. I did some more experimentation and found a good workaround: if I'm in an edit box that LastPass can supply a user ID or password for, I can use the JAWS cursor to right click and then access LastPass via the context menu. It's a little cumbersome but after a couple of runs through it gets pretty efficient. Seems like a couple of scripts to automate the various keystrokes wouldn't be too hard to write, either.

Dear Listers:

 

I’m sure there may be some of you out there who belong to a Google group of some kind and who maybe have tried to read messages not in your inbox but on the page of the  group you belong to.  This is the situation with me.  I am having trouble getting messages on my group’s page even just to open.  I find where the message is.  If it is unread I hit the enter key, but instead of opening the message nothing happens and the message just remains still.  I am using the latest version of JAWS and am using Windows 10.  One of you suggested I hit insert+Z to disable turn the virtual cursor off and try from there.  I did, but it didn’t work.  If any of you out there belong to a Google group and have tried reading messages from the group’s page, can you give me some tips on how to open and how to read such messages using JAWS?

1. Determine the drive letter assigned to the drive that has problems.

2. Go to This PC, and arrow down to the drive in question, but do not press ENTER.

3. Press ALT plus ENTER on the drive letter.

4. Press CONTROL plus TAB until you hear Tools Tab.

5. When you hear the Error check button, check now, press ENTER.

 

This will scan and fix problems on the external drive.

I am trying to set up communication so people have independence to subscribe and unsubscribe . I have set up a mailchimp free account and when I try to create a new campaign using the email template that I created, no matter what I do, I cannot access the edit field to input text.

I tried using different cursors andusually when you would hit enter on a website to get JAWS to work in the editing field, if I hit enter it moves focus somewhere completely different on the page. while  It is in drafts.

 

I decided to try word press and set up the website and it is now ready with a first blog prompt getting started, but it also is not letting me input any text.

 

I am using JAWS 2021 and Windows 10. I am a Microsoft 365 user.

 

Thank-you for  direction. I am not very techy so simple steps will be greatly appreciated if anyone has advice!

If there are any bloggers using word press or folks using Mailchimp with Jaws please contact me offlist. sharon.ballantyne@... with any tips and tricks!
