Re: downloads view is now separated by file type
How odd.
The "new" default Group by on the Downloads folder is by date, not file type. I actually like it and have retained it as I'm generally looking for something more recent before I'm looking for something older, and when I am I can just search for the old stuff. But I also clean out my Downloads folder pretty frequently and for anything I wish to keep long term I move it out of Downloads and into whatever folder I wish to archive it in almost immediately. In most of my browsers I make them ask me where I want to save whatever I'm downloading rather than using the Downloads folder to begin with. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1909, Build 18363 The purpose of education is not to validate ignorance but to overcome it.

Thanks so much. I changed “group by” to none- and that seems to have fixed it. Have never seen this before- but my daughter is using my system now… so will likely see more new and amazing things 😊

You've almost certainly accidentally clicked on (or the screen reader equivalent thereof) the column header for file type, and that's now what's being sorted on. Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1909, Build 18363 The purpose of education is not to validate ignorance but to overcome it.

I hope that someone can point you to what you're looking for. I'm just writing to say that I have never found such, and have always used trial and error with the JAWS dictionary to eventually land on the pronunciations I want for certain words. And some of the replacements are, to put it mildly, not what I would have thought would work.

Get yourself focused on the Name column header and hit spacebar. If the sort order is in the reverse of what you want, gain focus on it again and hit spacebar again, which will toggle the sort order from ascending to descending or vice versa. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1909, Build 18363 The purpose of education is not to validate ignorance but to overcome it.

Suddenly, after my folder list under downloads, the files are being listed by extension, i.e. .exe, .pdf or .zip. This is reeking havoc with alphabetical order. Any ideas as to the problem? Using Win 10, 1909. Thanks.

Re: Accessible System Backup Image software, (WAS) the latest update to jaws 2020 giving me a fit
James Bentley
Hi Glenn,
I just know that I was surprised to see that Microsoft and a third party software company were able to get together to provide a much needed feature to IFW. I wish other third party companies could do the same.
I never thought of the IFW recovery disk as a Windows PE because it is so stripped down but it sure works.
Apparently, it doesn’t have the necessary sound card drivers to work with my6 month old Acer Aspire but a $9, external USB sound card fixes that problem.
Cheers,

Hello,
There is an option in the Image for Windows menus to create an IFW recovery boot disk.
Yes, this recovery disk includes Narrator which can be activated by typing Control+Windows+enter. And, this allows a blind person to do the restore of a previously created backup image.
I made this disk on a thumb drive a long time ago. I do not remember the steps and I remember it gave me a lot of trouble before I kind of accidently got it done. If the directions are not clear to you, maybe someone can offer assistance. But, if you buy IFW, you will have Narrator available on the recovery disk.

With Image for Windows Version 3… some of the check boxes in settings are checked by default and some are not. Routing the Jaws cursor to the PC will cause Jaws to anounce the status of check boxes. Note, in some places in the menus, you get a plus sign to let you know that something got added instead of a check box.
With the exceptions below, I recommend that you use the default settings if you are just trying to back up your Primary/C drive.
I always check the accessible check box. I also check the completion alarm so I know when the job is finished. There will be a few other check boxes and settings that are easy to understand and checking them is optional. But, I wouldn’t change any setting unless I was certain that I know exactly what I am doing.
I also check both the verification and the byte per byte verification. IFW will remember these settings if you answer yes to the prompt that ask if you want to save the settings.
IFW is an extremely complicated and powerful software suite and I never make additional changes and it has always worked for me. My backups are verified. And, around 6 times now, I have restored backups.
Once, I restored a backup that was created back when I was using Jaws Version 12 just to see if it would work. It did. It was strange to look at files and emails and an OS. that were over 5 years old.

jaws, synthesizers, and phonemic changes
Leo
Hello everyone, I would like to alter some pronunciations that are mispronounced by the synthesizers that jaws commonly uses, such as vocalyzer and eloquence. These changes would not work efficiently if these alterations are made using the jaws user’s dictionary. In a nutshell, I wonder if a dictionary or lexicon with phonemic changes can be added whether to modify the synth or to force jaws to take these changes. When I say a dictionary with phonemic changes, I mean a file whether inbuilt in the screen reader or the synth, where I can write the actual word and its equivalent using some phonetic alphabet. I was told that even though some synths do not bring a phonemic dictionary per se, they are capable to recognize a file with such characteristics, and I proved it to be true with the version of eloquence SAPI 4.
To be precise, I quote this information taken from Microsoft documentation about how to create a lexicon for tts programs and other apps. For example, here are two phonetic spellings that a speech engine can use to recognize or speak the word “hello” in US English:
H EH . S1 L O
hh ax . 1 l ow
End of quote. So, if someone would have at least a slightest idea of how this can be done or where should I put a file with such characteristics in jaws to force it to pronounce accurately all those words, I would be grateful.
Thanks.

Hello, As many of you probably know, JAWS identifies individual applications by their file name. This method is used to load script filers, configurations and so on. However what if we have two applications with the same file name? A wrong scripts and configurations will be loaded leading to some serious errors! My suggestion therefore is to use the manifest as the identifier of the individual application, and fallback to the file name only when strictly necessary (no Manifest present).

Hi, one place to look for files and associated scripts is a file
called ConfigNames.ini, found in your users and then the JAWS directory, un to
the one you want, settings\ and the corresponding language code, enu for English
US, esp for spanish, and so forth. You can find out what programme is being loaded using the
command INSERT+q. CONTROL+INSERT+V will also tell you the exact programme
version for a given window if needed. Pressing the commands twice quickly will
virtualise the window for reviewing it later. One such example from the ini file looks like
this: [ConfigNames]
TeamTalk5Classic=tt_classic
TeamTalk4Classic=tt_classic
T
he first part is the name of the software, and the second part
is the script to be loaded if that executable is
running. In the example, both TeamTalk 4 and 5 would be using the same
set of scripts. Hope that helps. Regards, Nermin

What is “the manifest?”

Two identical file names with the same extension cannot exist in the same directory, so where's the problem? Glenn

And how can two file names be exactly the same? Do you have an example?
