Windows 8 and JAWS

Hamid Hamraz

Hi There Folks,

Poking around with Windows 8, I couldn't find a way to land on the menues in any application. For instance, in Internet Explorer, I used to press Alt to activate the menues and then do something from there. I am just looking for the replacement for that majic Alt key stroke!

Thank you.

mouse over not working

John J. Fioravanti, Jr.

Thought I'd share this with you for the future.
Some time ago I posted to this list that the mouse over command wasn't
working with windows 7 64 bit and jaws 13 on one of my computers. I
contacted freedom scientific and they told me to "maximize the screen"
I use the command extensively as I am an attorney and many of the state
websites require the mouse over command.
A few days ago my legal assistant looked at my screen advising me that the
font looked extremely large. Bottom line is I went into the display,
apparently a sighted friend had changed the display to medium unbeknownst to
me. Small is the default. I changed it back to small and the mouse over
command works fine now.
Hope this helps someone down the road.
John

Remembering to disable and enable real-time protection in MSE is a hassle,
so as an alternative, is there any way to prevent MSE from starting up
automatically at boot up and instead launching it manually with a hot key as

Hi Dennis,

This is a result of a bad MSSE update that can be gotten through
automatic updates or updating MSSE manually. It is effecting
different operating systems randomly & sporadically & the only way to
get your computer to boot up normally is to turn off Real Time
protection right before shutdown & turning it back on right after
starting your computer. Here are the steps on doing this:

Anyone that is having the same problem as I & a few others with IE,
OE, Jaws, & whatever programs that won't start after a computer
startup or reboot can do the following: Turn off MSSE's Real Time
Protection just before shutting down the computer & restarting it
right after you start the computer the next time. Here is how:

1. Go to your system tray with, Insert + F11.
2. Go to, PC status protected, press enter, & press enter on, Open. 3.
Tab to, change my scan schedule link, & press enter. 4. Arrow down to,
Real Time protection, tab to, turn on real time protection recommended
checkbox checked, & press the spacebar to uncheck this box.
Tab
to, save changes button & press the spacebar. You will get a message
that your computer may be at risk but, you can ignore this message.
5. Now, press, Alt + F4, to close MSSE & shut down your computer.

What to do after you restart your computer:
1. Go to your system tray with, Insert + F11.
2. Go to, PC status at risk, press enter, & press enter on, Open. 3.
When you press enter on, Open, you will hear, turn on button so, press
the spacebar to turn your real time protection back on & Alt +F4 to
close the MSSE window.

It would probably be a good idea to run a quick scan after turning
your real time protection back on.

HTH
Take care.

Hey Jerry,

I'll tell you my experiences with Amazon and their "Cloud Player". I bought some mp3 downloads from Amazon, and I didn't know that they had just introduced the Cloud Player. You used to download everything from your "media library", which is on the my account page, and you still use this for Kindle books. But now, as you know you have to download the cloud player. Well, it never did work, and it still doesn't. I had to get Amazon to refund my money for the mp3's that I had bought, and they didn't want to do it at first, but I told them that if they didn't, I would post what had happened on Face Book, Twitter, My Space, Linked In, and any other social site that I could think of. Don't get me wrong, I do a lot of business with Amazon, but in some areas they aren't that great. And the Cloud Player and their music download products is just one of these areas. Good luck with this one.

Hi Addison,

Have your friend do the following to find out what version of IE she's
running, just to make sure:
1. Open IE.
2. Press the keystroke, insert, control, + V. This keystroke gets the
application version of the currently running program.

I think we're cumulatively giving contradictory information. George says
the highest version of IE for XP is 8, which is also my less certain
recollection, so presumably Tina doesn't have IE9 on her XP system.

I don't want to read all the way back through the thread, but I believe
she says she has JAWS 9. The question, then, is whether JAWS 9 could work
with IE8. I don't remember.

This is why I kept asking questions about version numbers, etc., so that
someone who has better information could give a definitive answer. If JAWS 9
and IE8 don't work together, Tina needs to look into upgrading JAWS, ideally
to 14. But as I write that sentence, I note problems being reported on this
list by people with JAWS 14 and XP. Technology really forces people to stay
current, as if everyone could afford to.

Tina, again, check your version of Internet Explorer by opening it, then
pressing insert+control+v. Let us know what you find. Everyone's trying to
help you find the least disruptive and expensive solution, but we need this
information to do so.

Yes, Tina, you can go back to Internet Explorer8.

You need to press the Windows Key for the Start Menu. Then go to
Settings
and Control Panel. Then click Add or Remove Software. Find Internet
Explorer9 and tab to Remove. Press Enter on Remove, and wait until it is
uninstalled.

It should now revert back to Internet Explorer8.

The thing to do is not let Internet Explorer8 update again to Internet
Explorer9.

Thank you.

I think we're cumulatively giving contradictory information. George says the highest version of IE for XP is 8, which is also my less certain recollection, so presumably Tina doesn't have IE9 on her XP system.

I don't want to read all the way back through the thread, but I believe she says she has JAWS 9. The question, then, is whether JAWS 9 could work with IE8. I don't remember.

This is why I kept asking questions about version numbers, etc., so that someone who has better information could give a definitive answer. If JAWS 9 and IE8 don't work together, Tina needs to look into upgrading JAWS, ideally to 14. But as I write that sentence, I note problems being reported on this list by people with JAWS 14 and XP. Technology really forces people to stay current, as if everyone could afford to.

Tina, again, check your version of Internet Explorer by opening it, then pressing insert+control+v. Let us know what you find. Everyone's trying to help you find the least disruptive and expensive solution, but we need this information to do so.

Yes, Tina, you can go back to Internet Explorer8.

You need to press the Windows Key for the Start Menu. Then go to Settings
and Control Panel. Then click Add or Remove Software. Find Internet
Explorer9 and tab to Remove. Press Enter on Remove, and wait until it is
uninstalled.

It should now revert back to Internet Explorer8.

The thing to do is not let Internet Explorer8 update again to Internet
Explorer9.

Thank you.

If you could give a few more details I may be able to help.

Hi,

Have you tried going the options menu/Voices submenu/Voice Selection submenu, and selecting the speech engine that you want to use and the related voice that you want to use? Although, the program should talk using the default Eloquence voice which is what you hear during the installation and set up process. I have seen JAWS do some strange stuff over time though, and it is possible that if you go through the voice selection process again, and be sure to save the settings that you applied to that voice with a new name, it just might work for you. If not, Then call Technical Support. Good luck.

Hi,

You can download "DVD Shrink" from a number of sites. I recommend doing a web search for the DVD Shrink web page. You should find the site for the developer at the top of the search results. If I remember correctly the URL may be www.dvdshrink.org, but I'm not sure. What do you plan to do with the ISOs? I also know of a program called IMG Burn which will burn ISO files to other formats. Neither of these programs need a script to run, and are very JAWS accessible. Both of these software programs are published under the new General Public License, which makes them free. Many of the software programs that you pay for today started as free ones under the GPL. Good luck with them.

Most of these softwares have a feature built in to them that decrypts the DVDs making them easily copied. Some of the DVDs are not encrypted to begin with.

Re: JAWS scripts for Handbrake

Download DVD decrypter and DVD shrink. This would do the trick.

Wow!
do you really mean we have to disable and enable real-time protection in MSE
every time we turn on the computer??

Remembering to disable and enable real-time protection in MSE is a hassle,
so as an alternative, is there any way to prevent MSE from starting up
automatically at boot up and instead launching it manually with a hot key as
soon as your computer has booted up?

Hi Dennis,

This is a result of a bad MSSE update that can be gotten through automatic
updates or updating MSSE manually. It is effecting different operating
systems randomly & sporadically & the only way to get your computer to
boot
up normally is to turn off Real Time protection right before shutdown &
turning it back on right after starting your computer. Here are the steps
on doing this:

Anyone that is having the same problem as I & a few others with IE, OE,
Jaws, & whatever programs that won't start after a computer startup or
reboot can
do the following: Turn off MSSE's Real Time Protection just before
shutting
down the computer & restarting it right after you start the computer the
next
time. Here is how:

1. Go to your system tray with, Insert + F11.
2. Go to, PC status protected, press enter, & press enter on, Open.
3. Tab to, change my scan schedule link, & press enter.
4. Arrow down to, Real Time protection, tab to, turn on real time
protection
recommended checkbox checked, & press the spacebar to uncheck this box.
Tab
to, save changes button & press the spacebar. You will get a message that
your computer may be at risk but, you can ignore this message.
5. Now, press, Alt + F4, to close MSSE & shut down your computer.

What to do after you restart your computer:
1. Go to your system tray with, Insert + F11.
2. Go to, PC status at risk, press enter, & press enter on, Open.
3. When you press enter on, Open, you will hear, turn on button so, press
the spacebar to turn your real time protection back on & Alt +F4 to close
the
MSSE window.

It would probably be a good idea to run a quick scan after turning your
real
time protection back on.

HTH
Take care.
Mike

Hi John,
Well that might be the best I can do right now, as my laptop is down, so what I was just telling you earlier I was going from memory with that. But if I can get too another laptop or something else, I'll let you know.

Hi,

When I want to download the Vocalizer Direct voices, I go to the Freedom Scientific web page and click on "Blindness Products", then click on the link for JAWS. Scroll down to the heading for the "JAWS Features", which is a list of 7 items. The second item, or bullet, is where you'll find the link to "Sample and Download the Vocalizer Direct Voices". On this page, you'll find all of the voices in the different languages, and a group for each country that speaks that specific language. The first group is the English language, and there are voices for the following countries: Australia, Britain, India, Ireland, Scotland, South Africa, and the United States. Each country gives you the choice of at least one male and one female voice, and the option to download the voice in premium or high premium voice quality. To me, the high premium are by far the best. You may also like to check out the JAWS Headquarters page, which can be found by clicking the "Visit the JAWS Headquarters" link on the Jaws web page referred to above. This page has a lot of information about JAWS, Downloads, training materials, etc. I hope this information helps you to locate the voices that you are looking for. Good luck with this.

Michael B.
