Re: Jaws and office 2013

Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)

That's good to know. I will be going to Windows 7 Pro at home in a few days, and wondered whether to break open my factory-fresh 15, or stay with 14. I could field test it here at the office, but don't usually do that. The workload around here doesn't lend itself to experimentation, so I always use my home setup as a test bed.

I was told by an FS employee from Germany that Office 2013 works best with
JAWS 15.0, cause there are certain things that won't read well and work
together in conjunction with Braille displays.
For the time being, it would be better to stick with Office 2010 for best

Tom,

As embarrassing as it might be to say, Until joining this list, I never knew what "Document Object Mode" was. I, to this day, have done nothing with this, and I have used Office 2013 with Windows 7, 8, and now 8.1. When I need to write a document, I open the application, open a blank document, format it the way that I want it, and write away. I have never had a problem with it. And, what ever you say, do not say "Ignorance is Bliss." Ha Ha Ha.

Truly though, Tom, I hope that you get it figured out. I write about the things that I know about on this list, and like all of us, I ask questions when I need to know how to do something.

This is encouraging.

My one question, though, is whether you had to do something to disable
"document object mode".

I have heard that if "document object mode" is enabled, a number of Jaws
functions won't work properly with Office 2013.

Thanks!

Hi Tom,

I am running JAWS 14 and Office 2013, and like it very well. I also ren the
two with Windows 7 for quite some time, and it worked well. I had the Office
365 for a short while, just the trial period, and the desktop applications
are the same as 2013, but I did not care for the cloud applications though.
The only thing I do not like about Office 2013 is that there are no drop
down menus, and the ribbons are harder to navigate to find the particular
item you are looking for.

Needless to say, this did not make my day!

They say that the switch is necessary because we will be moving from Lotus

Spring
2014 University semester.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how Well Jaws 14 works with Office 2013,

I was planning to stay with Jaws 14 for a while. My SMA has expired, and
I
really had no plans to ask the University to renew it for Jaws 15, since
they are sticking with Windows 7.

Thank you!

Tom,

I should've been more specific. I was addressing your concern that JAWS 15 might be built more for Windows 8 than Windows 7. I haven't yet touched Office 2013. This computer came with Office 2010 Starter, which doesn't work with JAWS at all. For the reasons why, Google "click to run" "office" "JAWS" and you'll read more than you want to. But I'm no help with Office 13. Sorry for the confusion.

Perhaps we can make the switch to MS365. And still have me stay with Office

Fw: Flash Player update page

Bill White <billwhite92701@...>

I wanted to forward this to the JFW group, because many people have had trouble with the Adobe Flash player update page. There was a check box which didn't announce itself as a check box. This box was checked by default, causing people to have Google Chrome installed by default, as well as the Google Tool Bar.

The reply which I received is below.

Following up regarding the issue with the inaccessible checkbox on the Flash Player update page. This issue has been addressed, so if you visit http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer you will find a checkbox (checked by default, I can't do anything about that) that you can interact with .

Thanks to all who sent in comments on this, it does help me get the product team's attention.

Thanks,

Re: Jaws and office 2013

Kevin Hourigan <kevinthourigan@...>

Hello Tom,
The paid webinars are on the FS website, I think I paid $29.00 for three one and a half hour lessons regarding MS Word 2010, and this entitles me to the subsequent webinars on the same subject, such as MS Word 2013. I started Jaws in the spring of 2012, and as a new comer I found the webinars very helpful.
Cheers Kevin.

What you are saying is what I was afraid of.

Can you tell me where to find Dan's webinar?

It might be worth asking the University to buy it, just so we can assess the
true practicality of my switching to Office 2013 right now.

Perhaps we can make the switch to MS365. And still have me stay with Office
2010, at least for the time being.

Hello Tom,
I purchased the paid webinar for MS Word 2010, which I have, and received
access to MS Word 2013, in the bargain. I just listened to the 2013 version
long enough to decide I should stick with 2010. If memory serves Dan
provided work arounds where he could, and offered the suggestion that some
fixes may be coming in the future. This was in the spring of 2013.
Cheers Kevin.

Hello, all.

Yesterday, I was just informed at work that everyone with Windows 7 PC's and
laptops is going to be made to switch from Office 2010 to Office 2013 within
the next few weeks.

Needless to say, this did not make my day!

They say that the switch is necessary because we will be moving from Lotus
Notes, to the Microsoft 365 e-mail and calendaring system during the Spring
2014 University semester.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how Well Jaws 14 works with Office 2013,
and with MS365?

I was planning to stay with Jaws 14 for a while. My SMA has expired, and I
really had no plans to ask the University to renew it for Jaws 15, since
they are sticking with Windows 7.

Thank you!

Hi Tom,

JAWS 15 brings quite new navigation features for Win 8, but that doesnÇt mean that fixes for other things, especiallz for Office, are left out.
There are tons of bug fixes, and as far as I know, there will be a lot more in the upcoming update for 15.
Regards,
Nermin

But my dilemma is that we are all being forced to make the move to Office
2013 at work.

Supposedly, the version of the MS365 e-mail client that the University is
purchasing will not work well with Office 2010.

I also very much hesitate to switch to Jaws 15, since I have heard on this
list that Jaws 15 is made more for Windows 8, and its installation with
Windows 7 will cause some things not to work that used to work in Jaws 14.

Hi Tom,

I was told by an FS employee from Germany that Office 2013 works best with
JAWS 15.0, cause there are certain things that won't read well and work
together in conjunction with Braille displays.
For the time being, it would be better to stick with Office 2010 for best
performance.
The support for Office is constantly being updated though.

Regards,
Nermin

Charles:

I am now in the process of checking out some of the suggested web sites.

As always, some will likely be more helpful than others, but there seem to
be quite a few resources.

Thanks for the tip.

Tom,

I would suggest you go to google and in the edit field type: black board
learn and JAWS

Here you will find the answers to your questions perhaps on the first page.

Subject: Jaws and Blackboard Learn

Hi, again, everyone.

As I think many of you know, I am a professor of Sociology at Ferris State
University in Michigan.

One of the projects I have started working on involves putting materials for
my Introductory Sociology course sections into something called Blackboard
Learn.

Blackboard Learn is an on line course delivery and management system that is
increasingly being used by colleges and Universities throughout the country.

Has anyone on the list had experience with this system? If so, what
strategies have you used for getting Jaws to work well with the system?

Do you have any tips for optimizing Jaws with Blackboard?

Is there a list of hot key commands out there somewhere?

I am using Windows 7 and Jaws 14 here.

If you would prefer to respond off list, my private e-mail address is:

tombehler@gmail.com

Thanks again!

Dr. Tom Behler from Michigan

Hello Zdenek,
I keep trying the new voices as they come out, and I keep going back to Eloquence, especially when I am studying. I do have hearing issues as well, but still I find I often need to repeat things more often with the optional voices.
Cheers Kevin Hourigan.

Hi Kevin,
I do agree with you about the Vocalizer voices.
While they are quite nice to listen to I do have to repeat a lot and the Eloquence voices are much easier to understand.
This could be because I have listened to the Eliquence voices for God only knows how many years. (LOLLOLOL)
I like Karen from South Africa but I do have to repeat a lot with her.
Cy

Hello Zdenek,
I keep trying the new voices as they come out, and I keep going back to Eloquence, especially when I am studying. I do have hearing issues as well, but still I find I often need to repeat things more often with the optional voices.
Cheers Kevin Hourigan.
