Ms ann:
First,
If I use the jaws cursor to locate the add button, I can see it but if I
click on it nothing happens;
When in pc cursor, I don't even see the add button at all.

Next,
After I arrow down to bookmark, (regardless if I press enter or not),
I then tab over and no list of bookmarks comes up.

I am supposing that the difference between "name" and "location" is the way
the list of bookmars are listed in the combo box after the bookmark item in
the go to combo.

I am using the jaws2021 beta version with win10.

I must be missing something,
Oh well, maybe someday it will magically work;
Until it does,
I guess bookmarks won't work.

Please advise as you like.

I don't know what is different from name and location. when I add bookmarks
using each one, they are accessed the same.

So.
1. Alt-n, then k. Choose either name or location because it doesn't seem to
matter.
2. Type the name.
3. Tab to add and press enter.
that's all.

To access the bookmarks
1. Press ctrl-g (go to)
2. Shift-tab once to the list of items; page is the first.
3. Arrow down to bookmarks. I don't think you have to press enter, but If
your list doesn't magically appear, I guess you do.
4. Once in the bookmarks list, arrow up or down to the one you want and
press enter.
5. You are still in the dialog. You have to press escape to get out of it
and return to the document.

David,

Now that you’ve made yourself into our resident browser expert, thanks to your well-received book, I’m curious how you feel about Edge’s handling of PDF files. I’ve always opened them in Adobe Reader, but the other day I opened one in Edge. It was a credit card statement, and Edge laid it out exactly as it should be. Adobe Reader had never done so with these statements, and I’d tried a variety of AR settings. I’m considering making Edge the new default for all PDF files.

Simplest would be to install Acrobat DC. Adobe probably doesn’t even support the XI version any more.

Okay,
When I do an alt-n then k,
It asks me for a bookmark name, then I tab over to two radio buttons,
One is name and the other is location.
I assume that if I pick location,
It will show me the bookmarks listed by location in the ctrl-g window.
However, when I do ctrl-g, shift tab to the combo box and arrow down to bookmark,
Then tab to bookmark name edit/combo,
Nothing shows up there.
What did I do wrong in this process?

I didn't know you could do that.

You can set actual bookmarks, though. Alt-n, then k is the Word command. Name the bookmark. When you want to move to it, use ctrl-g, go to, which places the cursor on the page number item of a list. move to the bookmark item, which will display (guess what!) the bookmarks by name, and whack enter on the one you want. It is Word, not JAWS, and beautifully reliable.

As the situations described clearly indicate, e-mail filtering occurs at multiple steps of the receiving process, and where something ends up often depends on "who gets to it first."  In addition, and I'm glad Robin pointed this out, there are now (and have been for a while) feedback loops in and between e-mail service providers where the result of not all that many marking something as Junk/Spam ends up getting messages that are similar in the Junk/Spam filters of the e-mail service providers.

There was a huge problem with this (which seems to have subsided with user education, at least somewhat) with Groups.io messages being classified as spam because people were marking messages/topics they didn't like/want to see more of as spam, rather than using the Mute this Topic feature, and marking as spam was fed up to their email service providers and Groups.io eventually ended up on their Spam filtering lists.  This was somewhat solved when various providers were contacted and informed that Groups.io was a subscription service only.  No one gets random messages from this site, you have to sign up to receive them, so by definition they are not spam.

Another thing is that in the age of IMAP and Exchange email protocols, where the vast majority of the filtering and all long term storage is intended to occur on the server side, not on a client's computer in their chosen e-mail client, filters should really be created on the email server via the web interface a given service provider gives for doing so.  These, of course, vary by provider.  This is particularly useful for avoiding different things being randomly classified differently, as all the classification is handled on the email server before you ever see the messages on your device(s).  I wrote tutorial strictly related to Gmail about how to do this for Gmail:  Creating IMAP Labels (Folders) and Filters for Gmail.  If you're accessing your e-mail account(s) on multiple devices the best thing you can do is to set up server-side filtering.  In the case of Groups.io e-mail, it's simple to set up a series of filters based on the square bracket enclosed group name that comes on the messages.  It's also easy to set up a filter that uses the Groups.io domain in a From: address with a "never send to spam" designation, if that ends up being needed.

In my opinion it's always sworthwhile to keep up-to-date with Jaws unless of course you are using NVDA. The fact is that eventually you have to get caught up because Windows 10 changes so quickly and even with Office features change and are added all the time especially if you use Office 365 and there is simply no good reason to not always run the latest version.

Jaws is not quite as it used to be where a new version meant possibly major new features, nowadays sometimes these features are added half way through the year and in any case, if you don't upgrade on a regular bases or, if you live in the US, use Jaws via the subscription based model, you eventually have to pay hundreds of Dollars to get caught up, you might as well pay the $7 or $8 a month or whatever the subscription costs or if you use th eolder 2-year license model by the new SMA right after you use your last one. For the Home version I believe it's $120 every 2 years which is $5 a months, quite a few people spend this on coffee every day, if you divide it by the number of days it's like 16.66 Cents a day and having the use of Jaws is certainly worth a couple of quarters every 3 days to me.

Each version of JAWS seems to get a bit snappier and responsive although , to be sure, problems remain and always will with any piece of software.

New features are constantly added and modified.  Each new version offers more accessibility with one or more programs.

As I said updates can be subjective because we all use the program in different ways and with diverse pieces of software.  JAWS 2021 does a better job with Outlook than past versions however if I don’t use Outlook I may say not much difference.

Yes, but apparently they are finally going to release an October public beta instead of the September one that has been out for at least a month.

In an interview Wednesday evening, Eric Damery said that jaws 2021 along with fusion and Zoom text 2021 will be released around mid November. There will be a public beta in the next couple of days but if you changes will occur from feedback of that public beta at the release. There will be additional updates in mid December and another one at the end of January. Updates will continue through 2021 around every six weeks. With each of these updates, there may be additional features at it Along with bug fixes.

Hi,

Real improvements can be subjective.

Depends on how you use the program and with what different types of software.

For me I stay updated for the following reasons:

OS systems and programs are changing rapidly and with hnumerous updates.  Falling behind with JAWS can risk problems with the software interacting with the latest updates of apps and even the OS itself.

Each version of JAWS seems to get a bit snappier and responsive although , to be sure, problems remain and always will with any piece of software.

New features are constantly added and modified.  Each new version offers more accessibility with one or more programs.

I am not advocating that one must keep JAWS always with the latest version , cost and other issues prevent this, but I have found it helpful to do so.

As I said updates can be subjective because we all use the program in different ways and with diverse pieces of software.  JAWS 2021 does a better job with Outlook than past versions however if I don’t use Outlook I may say not much difference.

Does this make all clear as mud.  😊

I would guess in very early November.

Beta three is in private beta now and will be released publicly very soon.

Find out more on Wednesday evening on Main Menu Live as we have Eric Damery with us in hour 1 to talk about JAWS and its release.

Brian Hartgen will be with us in Hour 2 to talk about the many things available to us from Leasey.

You said the emails are going to your bulk folder. Do you mean the Junk folder or just to your inbox?  If they are going to Junk, I’m thinking your email provider is flagging them as junk as they come in, so the Outlook rule doesn’t even have a chance to run on them before they’ve already gone to Junk.  Can you go into your webmail for that account and be sure the JFW email is on the safe sender list?  I have no problems with the JFW list in Outlook here on my company account, but I’m on an iPhone list on my personal account and sometimes individual emails from that will land in my inbox or in junk.  I haven’t figured out all of the reasons, but sometimes it’s because someone else’s email service flagged the email, so when they reply to the list, my provider seems to think it’s still suspect.

I am glad to hear this from someone else, because it is odd and seems to be something connected with the Jaws list alone.
I use Thunderbird and/or WLM rather than Outlook so it is not application connected.
With WLM the rule works fine but on TB some of the posts go to my inbox and some to the Jaws list folder and I have never been able to discover why these posts differ. In my case, it is annoying and I keep trying to find a solution but it is not too bad since the majority of the posts do go to the correct folder. But like other things of this sort, I want to find out why it happens and how to solve the problem.
By the way, I am running the latest Jaws 2020 and Win 10 2004. My email provider is Gmail and I created the rule on the Gmail website rather than within the email client.

FYI for all, I’ve got Cisco Any connect running to do my job. However, when I disconnected the VPN, Voice assist actually worked correctly. Seems like the VPN was blocking JAWS from hitting whatever server it’s using.

I’ve no Oracle doesn’t block very many if any other JAWS functions so I’m curious if I need to ask for a White list on a specific process/file or is this a known issue.

Hi all,

Temporary placemarkers are used in Word for extended text selection. Press Control Windows K at the start of a selection and press Insert Spacebar together and then M at the end of the selection to highlight the extended text. It is very useful for highlighting large chunks of text and serves a different function than bookmarks, and as others said, you can only do a single temporary placemarker in Word while you can make them permanent on the web.

I am having the same problem. For some reason, doing the extended text selection works for me in some documents and not others. In those where it does not work, Alt tabbing away from and back to it does not help. I notice this with both JAWS 2020 and the 2021 beta.

I regularly use the screen shade while working to save battery on my laptop. However, occasionally I need to have a sighted person look at my screen either face to face or via a screen share on Teams (yes, the screen shade causes the screen to appear blank when sharing it as well).

Sometimes, when I go to turn my screen shade off, it just will not turn off at all and the screen remains black. It doesn’t matter whether I turn it off via the keyboard shortcut, the three finger triple-tap, the quick settings menu, nothing works. Even quitting JAWS entirely stops every other function of JAWS, apart from the screen shade. JAWS continues to announce, “Screen Shade off” or “Screen Shade on”, there are no errors. The only way I can get my screen back is to reboot the computer.

Anyone else experienced this and know of a way to avoid it happening?

I’ve checked my brightness and even turning this to 100% did not change anything, so I know it isn’t that my brightness is too low for anyone to see or anything like that.

I’m using Windows 10, the latest version of JAWS Professional 2020 and a Surface Pro 3 laptop I believe.

Thanks,

moderated Voice assist on a laptop

Should my laptop microphone work with voice assist? Currently I get no response when I say “sharky,” even with the setting set to use that command. When I use the command as a single command, I‘m told “nothing was herd”.
