The podcast is called “Mobituaries,”  hosted by Mo Rocca.  All the episodes are at mobituaries.com, but you can subscribe to the podcast anywhere you get podcasts.  I use Spotify.  When I go to Mobituaries using Spotify I find the table where the episodes are located.  My niece tells me that when you select “all episodes,” to the right of that there is a “sort,” link where you can sort episodes either from newest to oldest or oldest to newest.  In Google Play JAWS works with this, but not with Spotify.  But here’s what puzzles me.  In GooglePlay I can select episodes from oldest to newest, but they won’t play in that order after I select it.

There are a number of PC apps that can natively speed up and slow down playback.

3 free Examples.

The SpeakOn Podcast  app will allow accelerated playback as long as you download the podcast from within the app rather than  streaming it.

Control F8 is the command to speed up. Control  F7 slow down.

VLC also has excellent playback control if you have downloaded the podcast as a media file.

Right bracket speeds up and left bracket slow down and equals returns to normal speed.

Finally Mp3DirectCut  is surprisingly one of my favourite players of media files for the excellent navigation. F8 increases the speed of playback and F7 reduces playback speed.

Afternoon, all:

A few months ago, my church was using the Immerse study, which I found as an audio—I forget the source, but what I do remember is that there wasn’t a way to speed it up. Is there a podcast player that works with JAWS or NVDA and can speed up something like this? I could have gotten through the readings 15 minutes earlier, had I been able to change the speed, and it drove me nuts! Thanks!

moderated JAWS 2021.2012.48 January Update + What's New

Mike B.

Hi All,

Here's the Jaws2021 January update download link + what's new in the, JAWS 2021.2012.48, build.

32 & 64 bit download link:

What's new:
Enhancements in JAWS 2021.2012.48 (January 2021)

New Layered Keystrokes for Adjusting JAWS and System Volume

Many users working with conferencing applications like Zoom and Teams have raised the issue of JAWS volume blocking their ability to hear a meeting or
webinar while trying to navigate in other applications. To solve this issue, we have introduced a new feature that lets you easily adjust the volume of
JAWS independently from the volume in other applications, such as Zoom, Teams, Skype, YouTube, or other apps that play audio.

JAWS and Fusion now offer a set of layered keystrokes for quickly adjusting volume. To access this layer, press INSERT+SPACEBAR, followed by V. Next, press
J to control the volume of JAWS speech or S to control the main system volume. After pressing J or S, use the ARROW keys to raise or lower the volume in
small increments, or PAGE UP or PAGE DOWN to raise or lower the volume in larger increments. Press ESC to exit the layer when finished. Volume changes
remain in effect until you later adjust them using the same commands.

Note: When adjusting volume with the ARROW keys or PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN, the lowest level that can be set is 10 percent.

New Voice Assistant Option for Selecting the Microphone

You now have the option to choose which microphone the Voice Assistant uses when listening for commands. By designating a different microphone for this
feature than what is being used for other applications such as Teams or Zoom, it allows you to mute those applications during meetings and still use the
Voice Assistant with JAWS, ZoomText, or Fusion. You can find the Microphone input device combo box under the Voice Assistant group in Settings Center.

Support for Native Math Equations in Microsoft Word

JAWS and Fusion now supports reading math content in Word documents inserted through the Office ribbon without the need for additional extensions. While
you can still use the MathType extension from Design Science to create math content, you now have the option to also use the built-in math creation functionality
in Word. Whether math content was inserted in a document using the MathType extension or directly through the Insert tab of the ribbon, when you encounter
a math equation or formula, JAWS reads the problem and then says "Math Content." You can then press INSERT+SPACEBAR followed by EQUALS to open the JAWS
Math Viewer so you can study the equation in greater detail.

Once the Math Viewer is opened, you can navigate individual parts of an equation, such as variables, terms, coefficients, or exponents. As you navigate
to the various components, pressing DOWN ARROW lets you drill down into and navigate within that level of the equation using LEFT and RIGHT ARROW. Pressing
UP ARROW moves you back to the prior level. In addition, if you have a Braille display and JAWS is set to United States English or Unified English Braille
Grade 1 or Grade 2, math equations or formulas are displayed in Nemeth Braille. Pressing ESC closes the Math Viewer and return to the document.

Other Changes
list of 16 items
• To accommodate the new Volume layer keystrokes, the layered command to access the Braille and Text Viewer layer is now INSERT+SPACEBAR, B.
• When using the Convenient OCR feature to recognize the current control, screen, or window, you now have the option to use the Microsoft OCR engine as
this may provide better OCR results for onscreen images than OmniPage, which is the default. For example, if you press INSERT+SPACEBAR followed by W to
recognize the graphical window in an application and you find the results less than satisfactory, open Settings Center, select the Use Microsoft OCR For
Screen Recognitions check box, and then try the OCR again.
• You can now have both the Avoid speech cut off when using Bluetooth headphones or some sound cards and Lower audio volume of programs while JAWS speaks
options enabled at the same time in Settings Center. Previously, these two features could not be used together.
• When using the mouse to select text in Outlook messages, resolved a long standing issue where pressing CTRL+C was not copying the selected text to the
Clipboard as expected. This only worked if text was selected using the keyboard.
• Resolved issues where JAWS and Fusion were not reading as expected when tabbing through links in Outlook messages.
• In response to customer feedback, improved the description of the Speak Window Titles for Read-Only Messages Automatically Quick Settings option.
• JAWS no longer says "no selection" while navigating through slides while editing a PowerPoint presentation.
• In Excel, you can now select a range of cells on the current worksheet similar to how you select a block of text using a PlaceMarker in Word. To do this
in Excel, press INSERT+WINDOWS+K to set a cell marker on the cell where you want to begin the selection, move to another location on the same worksheet,
and then press INSERT+SPACEBAR followed by M to select the cells between the mark and the current location.
• Resolved an issue where the Windows 10 Mail app would close unexpectedly when replying to a forwarded message and you navigate the message contents using
JAWS.
• Addressed a reported issue where JAWS was not always correctly reading content inside of an HTML span tag in some situations.
• JAWS now continuously announces autocomplete information in the web browser address bar as you type.
• Addressed a reported issue where JAWS was not reading properly in the edit window of the TextPad application on certain systems with higher DPI display
settings.
• Addressed an issue with Libre Office Writer where JAWS focus was not in the document when the application was first opened.
• Added an updated 64-bit braille display driver from Handy Tech and also added a new driver from Eurobraille for their Esys and Iris braille displays.
• Resolved an intermittent issue where JAWS would unexpectedly close when attempting to connect to a braille display over Bluetooth.
• Improved the user experience when using JAWS with the Visual Studio Code application. This includes turning off the Virtual PC Cursor by default, eliminating
the announcement of ARIA regions, and removing the announcement of a long URL when the program is launched.
list end

Stay safe and take care.  Mike.

Have you tried rebooting, then unloading Jaws and loading Narrator, then navigate to the downloaded file and running it?

If that doesn’t work, then I think calling either FS support or Microsoft Accessibility support would be the next thing to do.

Hey Sandra.

Well, I know that VLC can do this natively (no plugin required). I generally use it for video, not audio, but it will play just about any format you throw at it and many types of streams as well. I’m sure some of the dedicated podcast apps can do this but, I remain old-school and haven’t really bothered with any of those.

Actually, when a JAWS install or repair fails, first try starting the process over again. It’s recommended by Vispero tech support people, and it’s worked for me in the past. If the second attempt fails, look at other options. Be sure to install from the downloaded file rather than updating from the startup prompt. One lister has already given us the link, and soon Mike B will undoubtedly give us both the link and new features summary.

These will trigger this message it's just updating the file on your computer to match what's on the server. If that's not it like they said call FS. All you have to do is click yes go through the process like you said it only takes about 30 seconds. i'm sorry about all the errors I don't have time to fix them I'm using Siri dictation on my iPhone.

Hey jessica.

Thanks for asking! It’s called Chrononauts, and is a podcast on science fiction literature. It’s something I do with my buddy nate and we go really in-depth and obscure. Each episode has a theme and the current two-part series is on hollow earth theory/stories. SO yes, definitely not for everyone to say the least. If you’re interested in such things though, you can find it at

http://www.anchor.fm/chrononauts

And doing a search in your various podcasting apps of choice should also find it. I know anchor pushes to Stitcher, Apple Play (I think), Spotify and a bunch of other platforms.

I would listen to the newer episodes first as the old ones are pretty rough, but so far we’ve only done eight episodes, witht eh next one coming in a week or so.

Generally if you say yes, you’ll be taken to the Internet and the FS page where it will check to see if you can be updated.  It takes less than 30 seconds.

Not sure how this will work if you don’t have admin privileges.  You may have to ask for help from your admin for your company.

They should know that this process now takes place when a new SMA begins.

This is a brand new feature from Freedom Scientific and was not introduced until JAWS 2021.

I am just beginning to become acquainted with podcasts.  There is one podcast where I am trying to sort episodes from oldest to newest and then play them in that order, but I am having no luck at all and am wondering if any of you do podcasting and might be able to give me some advice.  Can sorting from oldest to newest episodes be done at all, and if so, how do you do it with JAWS?  I subscribe to podcasts using Spotify.

I’d just call FS.

That should be an easy fix from their side to update your SMA info.

Hi,

I’m running JAWS 2021.  Starting yesterday, I’m getting a pop-up window when I start JAWS that says, “Your license has changed, would you like to update your authorization now? This will take less than a minute.”  I assume this relates to my purchase of a new 2-year SMA last week.  Unfortunately for me, you need admin privileges for this update to work and I don’t have them.  Can I do this manually or should I contact me IT guy for admin rights? Does it even really matter at this time or can I just wait till I’m meeting with the IT guy to install my next JAWS upgrade?

Yes, I’m using the apple calendar.

I don’t use the Outlook app either.  I just setup the outlook account in the native mail app.

I have a Windows machine.

Richard,

So you are still using the calendar app that is built into iOS?  The site I was getting information from was Microsoft and of course they want you to install their software on the iPhone.  So if you are using the iOS calendar and you have an iPad you could connect your iPad’s calendar using that same Outlook account, correct?  The difference being your calendar data is being saved to your Outlook cloud and the rest of your iPhone data is being saved to iCloud (assuming that you are using that function).  I think that I may have tried going down that path but I also use a Mac and you need to use a third party conduit on the Mac to make everything work.  That third party conduit wasn’t accessible and I ended up with a mess.  Luckily I have a second Mac that I can use for beta testing and trying things that I don’t want to attempt on my production Mac.  It has it’s own Apple ID so I didn’t trash any of my real data.  My goal was to use Outlook on my Mac to replace Mac Mail, Contacts and Calendar… but it didn’t pan out and I just stayed on iCloud.  I can still have all of my email and contacts in sync on my Win 10 machine.

I agree and this solution will work.  If you have been using your iCloud calendar for a while and it is well established you probably won’t like this solution since you will manually need to migrate your iCloud Calendar to your Outlook calendar.  For example, birthdays and reoccurring events will need to be recreated.  I just performed a quick Google search and everything I was seeing talked about creating anoutlook.com account and going that direction.  If you only have an iPHone and your not sharing your iCloud calendar with a Mac this solution will work.  Again, you will need to physically create reoccurring and any upcoming events in Outlook.

When I looked into this last summer the conduit was only in one direction.  Meaning that you could populate your Outlook calendar on your Win 10 system, but anything you did in Outlook was not reflected in iCloud.  The two systems are not overly compatible.  Also you had to do the setup in iCloud.com and the site is not overly accessible.

You can Google it to see if there have been any changes.  I do use iCloud for Windows but it does not include the calendar, but recently it started to sync contacts and your iCloud email.  Maybe someday in the future it will also include the calendar.

Subject: Using outlook calendar with Jaws?

Hi,

I have an event that I’d like to put on my outlook calendar, but also want all my events to sync with my iphone.

Is there a way to do this?

The sync could also go the other way, so if I add something to my iphone calendar, it’d also show in outlook.

Can anyone help with this?

Thanks,

Jessica

Well, I am a podcaster now I suppose, in the sense that I record/make one. But I also listen to a bunch. I don’t subscribe, to be honest, I just go to their websites and download the episodes. They usually have numbered episodes so it’s easy to figure out what order they go in, if that matters, and just play them that way. I don’t have any answers about spotify though, as I don’t use it.

Dear Listers:

I am just beginning to become acquainted with podcasts.  There is one podcast where I am trying to sort episodes from oldest to newest and then play them in that order, but I am having no luck at all and am wondering if any of you do podcasting and might be able to give me some advice.  Can sorting from oldest to newest episodes be done at all, and if so, how do you do it with JAWS?  I subscribe to podcasts using Spotify.
