I set mine to Y.  I think the default is that Y does the next span element and I just don’t navigate with that.

Hi! My first post here I have dabbled with JAWS before in which it seems a long time ago. Most of that previous info is gone. I have been a NVDA user for the last while. I’m taking advantage of the  free download of JAWS so I can learn a second screenreader. I found it a little frustrating that if I wanted to skip through just links I potentially had to use 2 different buttons. I’m talking about the unvisited and visited buttons. So I did some googling and yay! I came across info about the anylink option.  I am thinking I am going to make the anylink key the K button  and move the place marker key to the J button but, what should I do with the jump to line command which is J at the moment? It seems all the letter navigation keys are taken. I could be wrong about that though. I don’t have any plans on using the jump to line feature at the moment so burying it somewhere doesn’t bother me that much. I’m also open To hear in which what navigation key you used for the Anylink key

I have not installed the latest version of thunderbird but there have been numerous complaints over the last few days on the  NVDA list that  the latest version has become unusable as it has become too verbose and there was wide disappointment that Mozeilla had failed to test it with screenreaders. There were complaints that it was now unusable and  looking to downgrade to previous versions.

It may be that Jaws users are getting a different experience but   I had assumed that there would be a relatively similar screenreader experience. Certainly in the past NVDA and Jaws had performed relatively similarly when I have used Thunderbird in the past.

I am using both Outlook subscription version and Windows Mail

I use Jaws 2020 but have also used Jaws 2019 without issues.

Windows Mail in particular takes a little getting used to as you lose

focus from the inbox list every time new messages arrive

If you hear navigation bar or loading this will mean you have lost focus

from the inbox but you will then become a fan of the shift tab key as a

press or two of this should land you back on the inbox. This is part of

my muscle memory so this has ceased to be annoying.

The advantage of Windows Mail for me over Outlook is that it is

lightning fast, easy to set up and has a fantastic automatic preview

reading feature which allows you to hear the first 2 or 3 lines of an

email as you cursor down the inbox. This often allows me to delete mail

without even opening it.

Occasionally Mail will crash with Jaws, though not with NVDA for some

reason. However Mail is so fast at loading I again have got used to just

pressing the windows key and pressing Mto launch it again.

Outlook is slower but with more bells and whistles but as far as I am

aware has absolutely no access issues of any significance. I am using it

with Jaws 2019 at the moment to check that nothing has changed before

sending this message back to you.

I think at the moment it would be difficult to find a better alternative

than Mail and Outlook as I believe that there has been access issues in

the latest version of Thunderbird which was the other mainstay of

accessible email clients. There are some legacy version of Outlook

Express which apparently have accessibility support but I do not

personally use this.

What exactly are the issues you are having with Mail and Outlook? I

really think you may be better served trying to sort these out first

rather than going from the frying pan to the fire of other optionswhich

may have even more access challenges.

Hi,

In addition to what others have written I just want to add my experience.

From time to time my sound card will begin to crackle.  Dumping and re starting JAWS fixes the issue.  I have never traced what causes the problem and as it is intermittent it is hard to determine .  I am using Win 10 ,latest version, and latest release of JAWS on an HP with dedicated video memory and 16gb of memory.

No solution I know rather just a note that I have seen the issue and a JAWS re start takes care of it.

Don’t forget that you can always fall back on Microsoft Accessibility for specific problems.

I’m feeling overwhelmed by all the on-line things that are now being used. My employer is using Meet.google.com for meetings and collaboration. Is Hangouts the same as any of these?  Please clarify and give me some good places to learn how to use Google Meets.

well, I know that English language represent a challenge when it comes to how synthesizers pronounce homophones, but I believe I was misunderstood.

All I want is someone willing to share their default.jfd file, of course, assuming that as an native English speaker has already added the correct pronunciation in many cases.

For example, if you guys try to read the following word using eloquence, and then try to read it using vocalizer, you'll notice the difference.

the word is

Interestingly, my Dectalk Express synthesizer read “read” correctly both times in your example, that is, present tense first, then past tense. Whoever is behind this engine, or possibly the JAWS pronunciation itself, figured out a way to tell a synthesizer when to read certain words a certain way. Not all words work as well. “Polish” comes to mind. Whether it’s the surface smoother or a person from Poland, the pronunciation is the same.

Part of the problem could be the weird issue in the English language of spelling words the same but having a different pronunciation depending on where the word is used. Unfortunately a screen reader can only have one way of pronouncing these word so they pick the most common usage.

Example is you might read a text today or you may have read it yesterday.

Hi everyone,

I like to use eloquence synthesizer because it’s very responsive, and I’m used to it. However, if you use this voice on a regular basis, you’ll have probably noticed that eloquence awkwardly mispronounce lots of words, some of them very common words. So, I wonder if someone has a default dictionary for jaws that is willing to share. Besides, given that I’m not a native English speaker, all too often I can’t figure out how a word is accurately pronounced.

If someone could share with me their default.jdf file, I’d really appreciate it.

I had this exact issue.  You need to turn off formatting in Outlook.  You may need to do this for each Outlook folder since sometimes apply this view to all folders does not work.  Since I had trouble figuring where to turn this off, I did have the rep at the Microsoft Disability Help Desk do this for me.  All has worked since.  Sorry I cannot provide detailed steps to turn this off for you.

Good morning group,

I am using Chrome on a Windows 10 machine with JAWS 2020 and I am
having trouble with the following tasks which I had no problem
completing using Firefox (which has gone completely flaky on my
laptop).
Opening a file on a web page. In Firefox I could click a file link
and I would be given the option to open or save the file. Chrome does
not give me this option. According to web searches using CTRL+Enter
and/or SHIFT+Enter should do the trick. Neither option works for me.

Closing a window and/or going back to the previous window. In Firefox
I could use the File, Close Window to complete this task. As an
example after performing a Google search I click on a result and after
reading it I want to go back to the results page. Web searches have
not turned up any viable solutions.

Thanks for everyone's help,

What exactly are the issues you are having with Mail and Outlook? I really think you may be better served trying to sort these out first rather than going  from the frying pan to the fire of other options  which may have even more access challenges.

Subject: Email client for Jaws 2019

Hi all
I'm running the latest Windows 10 with Jaws 2019. I'm battling to find a email client which is accessible with Jaws 2019.
I tried MS Office since I have Office 365 and I also tried Windows Mail, but Jaws 2019 seams to have issues with both. Unless I'm missing something, is there maybe settings to be changed or layouts which make these work better with Jaws 2019?

Thank you

Nickus

moderated Window coming up alongside UAC dialogue

Daniel Wolak

Hi all,

I’m running into an issue with jaws 2020 on Windows10 1909,x64.

Every time a uac dialogue comes up, I’m not presented with the dialogue as normal.

Rather, the window that comes up is something entitled $$$Secure UAP Background Window.

Jaws seems to lag significantly, although I am able to alt+tab into the uac dialogue and then hit alt+y to accept.

I’ve sent this to Vispero, but am just wondering if anyone on the list has any ideas about this?

Cheers,

Daniel

Hi James

You are correct, it does have to do with the view settings.

First go to the view menu

Navigate to and activate, change view settings

Tab to IMAP messages and press enter

I did both actually phoned Microsoft their disability answer desk  a gentlemen was on the phone with me for over an hour couldn’t figure it out, I  believe

It has something to do with how the view is set in outlook.

I remember having this problem, but I don’t recall how I overcame it. Tom has posted the method that ought to work, JAWS key+3 on the numpad. Since that doesn’t work for you, you might do a JAWS repair and a Microsoft Office repair.  If you’re unfamiliar with either repair method, please re-post.

Greetings all can someone suggest how I might fix this problem. Instead of reading the number of messages jaws says   connectivity to your server I think it has to do with how outlook is set up in terms of the folder view but not sure.

Mozilla Thunderbird is completely accessible with JAWS 2019.
