Yes, I have had this problem. Originally, we thought it was because my window was not maximized. But it kept happening. Here’s what I figured out: When you open the message, if it’s acting goofy, like you mentioned, press the JAWS key and Escape. I don’t know why it works, but it does. You might need to give it a couple seconds, but the message will read as it should.

Subject: problems with mail and JAWS?

Hello,

Recently, I’ve been experiencing a weird problem with Windows mail and JAWS. It’s now hit or miss as to whether JAWS will read e-mails as they’re open, bring up the thing where it says “mail start groups navigation” and a whole bunch of stuff, open the message but make it appear blank, or just crash. If I’m not making se4nse here, it doesn’t make sense to me either. However, I’m just wondering if any of you have had this issue? It’s been going on for me for quite some time but can’t really pin it on when my computer was taken into the shop for servicing/updates, and that was before I started my winter semester this year.

Thank you,

Ashleigh Piccinino

P.S. another happening with JAWS and the mail app is that I can’t reach any attachments with tabbing as JAWS just crashes. Everything’s on the latest updates, so …

Hi group,

Here’s one source for some info on using WordPress with assistive tech. I don’t know how recent the info is, but it might be worth a look:

https://yourownpay.com/build-website/

I am sure I saw something about a WP list for those using screen readers but I didn’t keep the subscribe info. Anyone know of such a group?

Here’s a book I got from Bookshare which, although not written from the perspective of a screen reader user, is quite comprehensive and is pretty easy to understand:

WordPress All-in-One For Dummies

Lisa Sabin-Wilson

And, a lot of the info in the “Dummies” series can be found online. Just use your favorite search engine.

Lastly, here’s a site with a lot of info about building a WP site using a screen reader. Instructions are keyboard-based:

https://www.customerservant.com/series/wordpress-with-a-screen-reader/

I’m on the hunt for additional resources so please share if you have some.

HTH and thanks,

Norma

Hi again.

I’m using JAWS 2020 with the latest Windows 10. I’m not finding a move to trash option, and the title I want to change is the title of the web site, not the blogs.

Thanks for any help.

See if the following steps work for you:

Log in to your WordPress site.

Find “Posts.” I have a placemarker set here.

On the next page, search for the current title of the post you want to edit or delete.

To edit, click on the edit link under the post’s title. When you land on the next page, you will have the option to edit the various fields. Be sure to end by clicking the “Update” button or your changes will be lost.

To delete a post, click on the link below the title. as I recall, it’s labeled “Send to trash.”

Hello, is there a setting somewhere in verbosity or settings center that will cut down on Jaws saying bullet 55 of 273, or level 1 in a numbered list? In big documents, or when teaching clients, this extra verbiage is confusing.
Thanks, Matthew

Hi Robin,

I had previously tried Alt A to get into the address field with no luck. But, I tried it just now and it did the trick. I don’t know what the problem was previously, with Office 365 and Jaws it could be any number of things. I am just so glad that you made the Alt A suggestion and it worked.

With much appreciation,

Norma

Norma,

I’m in JAWS 2020 with Office 365.   It’s not operating as smoothly as I would like, but I’m able to read it.   It seems like JAWS loses focus a bit and also sometimes read a bit extra.  There is a shortcut key of Alt A to get to the text box where the address can be typed or appears if you hit the label option after selecting the text you  wanted in your label.   I’m not sure that I have a consistent work around and I’m heading into a meeting, but a quick answer is to use Alt A and either Insert tab or Insert up arrow to read the current line.  It seems that if I type my address into the text field in the label dialog, I can hear as I type, but I am not consistently able to reread what I typed without navigating away, using Alt A, then one of the read line options.   I’ll come back to this conversation later and see if I can help anymore later today.

I also forgot to ask, what label template?    I can try to play with this later today or this evening with JAWS and see what happens for me.  It's helpful to know exactly what it is you're trying to accomplish and how you're going about doing it.

Hi Dave,

Here are 2 sets of steps:

From: Carlos
Place focus on the link or button to which you want to assign a label, press Insert+F2, and select
"Custom Label" from the list.
This has been in JAWS going back at least several versions.  These are different features for doing similar things.  The "Prompt Creator" and "Graphics
Labeler" are used for labeling controls and graphics in applications.  The "Custom Label" option is used for labeling HTML elements like buttons and links
on webpages.
Carlos

From: Mauricio Molina
When on the Internet, once you locate a button without a label, press JAWS / Insert Key, Control, + Tab.  You will then be asked to type in a label.

Subject: Using JAWS to create a label for a button on a web site, which has no text label

Hello everyone:

The other day, I accessed a web site, which on the whole, was very
accessible.

Unfortunately, there were 2 problems. the first, was the link, which took
you to the shopping basket page. This link had no text lable, to tell a user
of a screen reader the purpose of the link. The link is a standard HTML
coded link.

the second is a standard HTML button, which also does not have a text label.
This button is for removing an item from the shopping basket.

My question is, is there a way within JAWS, where you can attach labels to
specific links and buttons on an individual web site?

The link and button on this web site are not graphics

Thanks in anticipation.

I just checked with Chrome and JAWS/NVDA. When you go to your Doctors portal, you will land on a text entry field for your name. This field appears to be correctly labeled for all platforms from reviewing the HTML. If you press enter after putting in your name, and it is the first time, you will then get to a page with two buttons one to enable your web cam and another to proceed without a camera. These buttons appear to work correctly with both screen readers. Back on that first page however, the check in button that is one tab stop beyond the patient name field does not respond to click events correctly, you would need to switch to focus mode and then hit space or enter on that button. Probably means  that the developer took a span and marked it up with ARIA to create what appears to be a button, but then used mouse or pointer down events to trigger the button instead of click events. Probably more information than you were asking for!

FS should really get rid of the virtual ribbons feature. newbee users are better off learning how to use the native ribbons built into programs that have them.

moderated Re: searching my computer

Is this a network drive, as Chris suggested it might be, or is it a USB drive (whether flash or HDD or SSD), or is it a partition on one of the internal drives in your computer?

Windows search only searches indexed locations, and though you can set it to search non-indexed locations, believe me, you don't want to do that.  You need to open Control Panel, Indexing options and check to see what your indexed locations actually are a the moment.  If you wish to edit these to add or delete a drive, that drive has to be connected when you're attempting to do so.  Activate the Modify button, and at the top there is a grouping Change selected location that contains a list of locations with checkboxes next to them (and dropdown arrows to expand in case you only want to index some specific folder or folders in a drive).  Checking the checkbox for the drive you want to have searched will add it to the index.

You can add networked drives to the index, and that's well explained here:  https://www.online-tech-tips.com/windows-10/add-network-folder-to-windows-search-index/

I had no problems using a MacOS or Windows browser and a screen reader

found several unlabeled fields, and when it prompted me for my name, I
could not find that field. The only time I have tried actually
connecting with it is with the iPhone, where I could hear my doctor
