I accidentally discovered a cool trick in Outlook. If you have more than one type of email signature, based on the audience of your email, I thought we had to go select the one we wanted each time from the Insert Ribbon under signatures. Here’s the trick, as long as you have a default signature in any new email you create, you can simply arrow down into that signature text and open the context menu. The list of your signatures are right there for you to select from and the whole thing will quickly update. Sometimes the Outlook developers surprise me with the shortcuts they code.

Question for other Webex meeting users
Van Lant, Robin
We use Cisco Webex at my company. I’ve had a frustration that I wonder if any other users have experience and have thoughts on.
When I click on a link to a meeting, my browser (Chrome), will open. The meeting screen will load. I will often hear JAWS say something like, “You are having trouble with the connection”, but pretty soon I can tab around some of the features, including the participant list. I have enough vision to see that a window has popped up where the audio & video connection information is. It used to be that focus would land in that window and I could tab through the options on where to do my audio connection, then I would click the Audio Connection button for Webex to call my phone. After some upgrade a while back, I typically cannot get focus into that window. As I tab around the initial screen that loads, I’ll hear something called audio Connection checked, but hitting this doesn’t seem to do anything. I hear reference to a “floating panel”, but cannot seem to get to it. My current workaround is that I go to the audio menu with Alt A and open the audio & video connection window from there. This can take precious time when I’m about to run late to a meeting.
Anyone else have a similar issue?

Hi, You had Twain right except that the “I” stands for Informative . Also, with the latest Windows 10 update the JAWS OCR may not work properly and a JAWS repair may be needed. This happened to me and JAWS could not see the scanner even though OpenBook still detected the scanner.

I just checked my Windows 10 scanner, and after doing the keystroke to scan a document with Jaws OCR it took a couple of minutes for the list to populate and show the Epson Perfection WIA option. When someone is referring to a, TWAIN driver, it's the, WIA driver option you will see in Openbook if OB were installed. Below are what the acronym TWAIN supposedly stands for: TWAIN literally means a, Tool Without an Interesting Name, or technology without an interesting name.

Does this HP all in one has a Twain Driver or does it just use the HP software? I’m not sure the Jaws Convenient OCR would see it if it has some other software that drives it.
You might want to check for a Twain driver.

Re: jaws with text area boxes.
Patrick Murphy
Hi,
Here is the html fix I found for it. <label for="Query">Enter your query:*</label></td> <textarea rows="4" id="query" name="query" aria-label="Enter your query:*"></textarea></td> The label for and aria-label together, allows jaws to say “enter your query:*”. However, the user just sees the actual label. Without either one of these, jaws will not say anything in relation to the textarea box. I have tested this with jaws 2018 and 2020. I used a chrome based browser to try it. The browser is called brave. I do not have google chrome or edge chrome installed, as I found their foot print on the laptop to be too great. Brave performs in exactly the same way, as it is built on the chrome engine, but is a lot smaller.
Thanks,
Pat

Hi,
Maybe someone else has seen this. On a web page form, you will obviously have a number of different types of input, text boxes, combos, radio buttons etc. One of these is a “textarea” which typically is used for entering something like a large query or something to be sent. When tabbing through the various form controls, jaws will read out the labels associated with other input controls, but just says “edit” when it comes to the text area control. If you tab away from it, and return to it after entering something, it just says “contains text”. The label attached to it could say something like “please enter your query”. If you come out of forms mode, and read the page normally, you will see the label text. Has anyone seen this? Any work arounds?

Amazon.com or the BARD site, there are no security threats and Internet Explorer is perfectly safe. Most people come across malicious sites either from fishing eMails or a web search. Even if I believe a message is from a legitimate site, I will typically go to that site from my bookmarks and look for the information that the eMail refers to. I see a lot of fishing messages like my account needs updating or something like that, and they want you to follow the link to your account. When you check the properties of that link, you find it is not going to the site that they are claiming. That is where IE has problems, in fact, many browsers may have problems with a link from a fishing message. And even if folks prefer IE, it should not be your default browser, because if you are tired and make a mistake on such a message, you want to have some protection that Chrome or FireFox is better suited to provide. Briefly, there are two conventions of blind people in the US. Both are virtual this year. It costs $25 to register for the American Council of the Blind convention, while registration for the National Federation of the Blind convention registration is free. Note that my knowledge about all this is rather superficial, nothing says there won’t be other costs once you delve into it. Both conventions will have some technology focus.
To look into this further, find the convention pages on http://acb.org and http://nfb.org.

I don't believe that Vispero is actively planning on phasing out SMA purchases because the home annual licenses are currently only available for personal use. Many users continue to rely on the JAWS Professional license which continues to offer SMA options. As of now Vispero hasn't announced specific discounts on specific products for the virtual conventions but they have indicated that such discounts will be available for virtual attendees. Because specifics have not been announced all we can do at this point is speculate on what may be offered. If it's going to be like last year's offerings there were discounts on home annual licenses. If memory serves you could even get a 50% discount if you attended Eric Damery's session. My guess is that similar offerings will be made available for this year's conventions but I admit this is just speculation.

Just to amplify Brian’s point here, one shouldn’t expect people who don’t need screen readers to be proficient in their use, except for accessibility specialists whose job requires them to have this knowledge. All of the proficient screen reader users I know who are sighted are also accessibility specialists by profession.
Not every organization that develops software has accessibility specialists on staff. The larger and better resourced ones are more likely to employ them, but it isn’t yet the norm everywhere. Some rely on consultants who can provide training and remediation services, but not everyone can afford those either. Education for software developers is crucially important.

Normally, Vispero only offers special discounts to attendees at the ACB and NFB national conventions. However, because both organizations will be holding their respective conventions entirely online this summer due to Corona virus restrictions and health concerns, it is unclear how Vispero would offer special discounts to convention participants, if they offer any discounts at all. Almost nobody purchases JAWS outright any longer because it is far more cost effective to purchase a one-year license for only $90. I doubt that Vispero would offer discounts on JAWS SMA's because they want to phase them out and gradually migrate all JAWS users to the one-year license arrangement, which would be more profitable for them over the long run. Maybe as a gesture of good will to help out the thousands of blind consumers who are stuggling financially during the health crisis, Vispero will extend the free trial period for JAWS beyond June 30.
