Sieghard, I appreciate all of the responses I've had. I don't know the model of my keyboard and, when I tried to check the original emails around its purchase, I couldn't find the information. I'm using Windows 10 and JAWS 17 (soon to be updated to JAWS 2020). I don't have a sighted person handy just now but oculd try an old keyboard which was okay except for the letter l sticking.

Hi Don,

If none of the function keys work I think it's time to look more closely at your keyboard.
Do you know the make and model?
Would you have another keyboard around you could plug in and try? I suspect that your keyboard either has a button or switch to disable the function keys and you accidently pushed it or it is defective in some other way.

I was asking because some keyboards have a switch or button which locks the function keys and yet others like the Logitech K780 require you to press also the FN key along with any other key combination, e.g. without Logitech Options software installed where you can tell the function keys to behave normally, you would have to press FN + Alt + F4.
Another question I would have is whether this is on a laptop or a desktop?
If it's on a laptop, does Alt + F4 work if you use the laptop's keyboard?
Lastly, are other function key shortcuts working, e.g. Jaws Key + F7 to pull up a list of links on a website or even just Jaws Key + F10 for a list of open applications or Jaws Key + F11 to speak the time?

I think Control+Shift+N has been around since the early days of Windows.  I learned it decades ago, with all screen readers.

Typical of Windows, there is usually at least two ways to do most things.

In fact, until now, I didn’t know about alt+2.

Hi.

The quickest way to create a new folder is to first open the folder that you want the folder to be created in. In other words, if you want to create a subfolder in your Documents folder open the Documents folder. Next, press shift-ctrl-N. You will be in an edit field. Type the name of the folder that you want to create, followed by the enter key.

I am asking because Don asked what Narrator is and while Narrator was of limited use in Windows 7, I think most blind Windows 10 users probably have heard about it since it is being continuously being improved and has been the subject of many Podcasts and email list discussions.

Don,

hit control +alt +delete key (above arrow keys)
arrow down to device manager and hit enter
arrow down until you hear programs currently running. Microsoft Word for
example.
If this is what is not being able to close, once you hear the MS Word, hit
tab key until you hear close program and hit enter. It may take a few
attempts hitting the close program button and may also take a few seconds
to
close the program. If other programs are needing closed, shift tab back to
the list and arrow up or down until you hear the next program needing
closed. again hit tab until you hear close program and hit enter. Repeat
as
needed...

Hello,

Normally, you should be able to access it the same as any other attachment. That is, open the message and hit shift tab once to place focus on it. You can then hit enter to be given various options on what to do with it. That said, your problem may be that you are using a very old version of JAWS.  Probably time to update to JAWS 2020 with the annual license.

Make sure the sender is giving you HTML-formatted mail, or plain text, not the old format that Microsoft Outlook used to generate – I think it was based on RTF.

At least in older versions of Microsoft Outlook (e.g., 2013), it was hard to find attachments in those messages.

With current Microsoft Outlook, it’s Shift+Tab after you open the message.

Open the email

Hit tab and it will move to the attachement line and it should read attachement and it’s title and size

From there you can hit shift f10 and arrow down to what you wish to do

In fact, jaws reads the email before I open it as having an attachment; however, when I open it with Insert+a Jaws reports: "there are no attachments."

Good morning: I'm using Jaws 18 with windows 10. When someone sends me an email in outlook with a screenshot attached, I can't find it with jaws to open it. I have to use my iPhone. Is there a way to find the actual .PNG file with jaws in the body of the email?

Thank you.
