Madison,

I wonder if this happens after you've been working with JAWS for a while. Ever since installing JAWS 2021, I've experienced problems like this, which I didn't with JAWS 2020. Don't worry, I haven't forgotten you're using 2018. My solution has been to safe the draft of the email, assuming I've started it, and then to close and reopen JAWS. Obviously, a workaround, but perhaps you could try and see if it does the job until you're able to upgrade.

As you clearly realize, you'd be advised to upgrade your JAWS when you can afford to.

Note that Edge isn't an email program; it's a browser. Can you tell which email program you're actually using?

Subject: Edge and Jaws question

Hi all,
I don't know if there's any way to fix these issues (other then upgrading which isn't happening right now), but I really hope there is. Anyway, when I type in an edit field (or whatever they called) in Edge I can't go back and read what I've written and if I erase a character Jaws just says blank so I don't know what I've erased. Also after I've input my email in a site it saves it, and even when I try and type a new email it just fills in the box with my email so when I type a new email address it sticks my email in there. So, are there any settings within either Edge or Jaws that I can change to fix any of these problems? If there's a setting that can be changed so that Edge never saves my email and I have to type in my email address everytime I log in or do anything on any site, I don't care, it's a small price to pay. I'm using Jaws 2018, the latest Edge, and Windows 10 version 1909. I really hope that there's something I can do to fix these issues, as they're driving me crazy. Look forward to any help/suggestions anyone can provide me!! Thanks Madison

Where there’s a choice between using the return key and the spacebar, I go with the latter. It seems to have fewer potential consequences.

Hi.

I’ve never encountered what I’ll describe. I went to a site to take a test for a potential job. It was multiple choice, and you selected the answer from a set of four radio buttons. Usually, all I’d do was hit ENTER when I had focus on the radio button I wanted, and it’s selected. Not with this site. I’d hit ENTER, forms mode was active, then I’d have to arrow to another choice and back to make it stick. I’d like to know why I had to do so? I’m using JAWS 2020 and the latest Windows 10 20H2. I’m not sure about Edge, because I don’t know if it auto updates.

Thanks in advance for any ideas. It’s not a big deal, but I am curious.

I could be wrong but I had the same kind of issue with jaws and thunderbird. Fixed the problem by making sure enhanced edit was enabled in jaws.

Sorry to say, it sounds like you need to update your windows 10 and JAWS as
you probably have incompatibility issues.

Without the updates you may have to live with the problem.

Not for me.  It will throw you back into the Navigation Panel, which is a find function of its own, and only if it's visible.  If it's not visible, I get nothing out of F6.  And if the navigation panel is visible, CTRL+F will throw you to the edit box in it as well.

I stick with ALT+H,FD,A  to get the Advanced Find Dialog box to open, as no matter what else happens to be on or off display, that gets it every time.

Hi Richard,

I usually use Speedtest.net, for the iPhone they also have an app which works well, it is called Speedtest by Ookla.

I just tried fast.com and while it displayed my download speed, it showed 110 Mbps which seemed slow for my 275 Mbps fiber connection, this site does not display upload speed or the ping delay in milliseconds. Both of these can be very important depending on what you are doing.

If you use speedtest.net you get all of these readings and when right after I went to fast.com I went to speedtest.net and clicked the button to start the speedtest, my download speed was given as 247 Mbps which is much more in line with what it should be. There is also a Chrome extension for Speedtest which works well, I also just tried their Windows 10 app from the Microsoft Store, but it seems to be inaccessible at this point and when I tried to switch to the Jaws scan cursor it sort of locked up Jaws until I minimized all to go to the desktop, then Jaws came back and I could Alt + Tab back to the open Speedtest app and close it with Alt + F4.. But as I said, the website, Chrome extension and iOS app work great.

Best regards,

Sieghard

That will only underline the selection.

Or, press control+u type what you want underlined, and then press control+u again to turn off underlining.

By the way, ALT+TAB or ALT+SHIFT+TAB will typically throw you right back in to the Advanced Find dialog so that you can issue that ALT+F to find next if you've switched focus away from it.  It normally hangs out right next to the Word Window where it was initially invoked, but could show up on either side of it.

That dialog can be left open, and if you're doing repeated searches that's what is typically done.  If you've set up an advanced search on, say, the word "Control" in bold, each hit of ALT+F is the find next so long as the dialog remains open.

Mind you, if that dialog is open, and you have multiple windows of Word open, it will remain open even when you switch from Word Window to Word Window.

I dismiss the dialog after I've finished with all the formatted text related searching I need to do at the moment.

In settings center there is a button called something like keycaps that I remember being discussed by Jonathan on FSCast as a way to prevent “tab” from being spoken every time it was typed (including alt-tab). So I expect you could reverse this process to have tab and arrow keys pressed.
Probably would be worthwhile setting this up in a demo user account, because I am sure you don’t want to hear all that usually.

Hello,
Generally in word, the control-pageUp and control-pageDown keys will do this if you have a search enabled. When first getting into a document these keystrokes will move by physical page, but once a search is done they move to the prior or next search match.
