moderated Using Cisco Packet Tracer with JAWS

Callum Stoneman

Hi all,

I have recently started a new job on an IT Networks team and am being encouraged by my employer to take a Cisco CCNA qualification as it will help massively with my future career in this field. I am interested in doing this, but the problem is that much of the Cisco content relies heavily on their Packet Tracer network simulation software.

When I first started at university around three years ago, our course also used a lot of the CCNA content and we tried back then using Packet Tracer with JAWS, but with no success. As soon as the program is launched, JAWS says nothing. When pressing tab or the arrow keys, nothing at all is spoken, not even "blank". Me and my tutors contacted Cisco in the hope that they could help or recommend an alternative, but they were less than helpful so we were left to find alternatives for ourselves, which we did. I studied the CCNA content and got my degree, but I'm not CCNA qualified on paper, plus the content changed at the start of this year, so I am now studying it again for work.

Three years later, things are no better with the latest version of Packet Tracer and JAWS 2020, and the alternative method I used at university (using physical devices instead of virtual ones) is not possible at work especially in the current situation. I have contacted Cisco again and this time they seem a little more helpful. They claim that they have tested Packet Tracer with JAWS 2020 and, in their words, "it works, but with some gaps" and they seem completely stuck for answers as to why it doesn't work with JAWS at all on my machine, but it does for them. They of course tried blaming the user at first, "Is your speech set to mute? Is your volume set to an audible level?" etc etc. It would be wrong for me to say that I'm a JAWS expert, but I'm certainly not a beginner. I have used JAWS for many years and am very familiar with it, but nothing I try makes any improvement with Packet Tracer.

The person who I have been in touch with from Cisco's accessibility team has now put me in touch with one of the Packet Tracer developers and I'm currently trying to arrange a call with them in the hope that we can figure this out, however I would like to know if I'm missing something with this.

Has anyone else had experience with Packet Tracer? If you have got it to work, any tips/workarounds would be hugely appreciated. Equally, if you have tried it out recently and have found it to be inaccessible, I would like to know so that I can provide as much detail as possible if/when I speak to Cisco.

Many thanks in advance for any help and comments.

Bill, thanks for your response.  I had been using Internet Explorer but with your suggestion I tried Google Chrome.  Like you, I’m using Windows 10 and JAWS 2020.  With Google Chrome I could read more of the website but must admit had difficulty getting around the site and finding what I wanted.

I live in Canada but I may take you up on your offer and phone at a later time.

Many thanks for your quick responses.

I’m wondering if anyone can offer suggestions.  Last week TCM (Turner Classic Movie) network changed their website.  The daily movie schedule, which used to be accessible with JAWS, now isn’t.  I had a sighted friend check and it’s on the screen.  I tried copy and paste and then tried to print but all that resulted was a huge sheaf of paper going through the printer, evidently not detectable by my scanner!

TCM’s website is tcm.com.

This is hardly a significant issue but still I’d be glad of any help.

The name of that special folder for mp3 files when the storage medium contains both mp3 files and digital talking books is audio+podcasts. Note the plus sign between audio and podcasts with no spacing. If only mp3 files are on the storage device, the special folder is not required.

NLS players can play mp3 files, but it won't tell you the name of the file, and if there is more than one file in the book, you will have to be sure that they are labeled so they will play in order.

There is a special folder name, which you put the mp3 files into, but I cannot remember the name off the top of my head.

Call your regional library.

I have the latest version of JAWS and office plus windows 10.

You are going to have to save it as audio, the nls machines don't have a method for reading text.

See if the note below helps:
Note:  To get out of applications mode press the PC cursor twice quickly.  That is exactly right. That is exactly correct. Pressing the PC cursor key twice
quickly reactivates either the PC cursor or the virtual cursor. Most likely it will be the virtual
cursor assuming this is happening on a Web page.  Use this keystroke instead of the, Insert + Z, keystroke mentioned below in Aaron's reply.

What is application mode, and how does it affect what I am doing?

Thanks,
Ann

From:
Page, Aaron
Hi Ann,

Application Mode is a mode that JAWS will enter when it begins to interact with a web application. Application Mode is designed to treat the web application
as if it were a typical Windows-based program, and not as a web page. The advantage to this is that application-specific keyboard shortcuts will work without
the need to use the JAWS pass-through, the disadvantage is that typical JAWS keyboard shortcuts (i.e. "H" for headings, "B" for buttons) will not work
as these keystrokes are now being passed through JAWS to the application.

When using web applications that trigger JAWS' Application Mode, it is usually very helpful to learn keyboard shortcuts that are specific to the application
in order to effectively navigate and use the application. You should also have some success (if the application is accessible) navigating the web application
using tab and the arrow keys.

You can usually tell that you are entering an application as JAWS will announce "Application", and upon pressing Enter you should hear JAWS beep as if
it just entered a form. The most frustrating thing about application mode (in my opinion) is the difficulty in getting back out of the application. I usually
will press Insert+Z to set the Virtual PC Cursor to off, and then press Insert+Z again to turn the Virtual PC Cursor back on. After turning off and back
on the Virtual PC Cursor you should again be able to use normal JAWS keyboard shortcuts. If anyone on-list knows a better way to exit applications mode,
I would love to hear it.

You can practice using applications mode  on this page:
https://www.tinymce.com/.
If you press "R" to move through the regions you will encounter the application region, at which point you can press Enter to enter applications mode and
begin interacting with the application. This example is an HTML text editor called TinyMCE, which is a commonly used editor that uses an application region
and is relatively accessible.

Hope this helps!

If there is a folder called $vrdtb on the cartridge you are using, then you want to put the folder containing the daisy book in there. If not then just putting the folder in the main directory should work. So, all the daisy files must be in a folder not in the main directory of the cartridge or usb stick.
Also, the NLS readers do not understand  text only books, they must have sound files associated with them.

Some email providers are tossed onto spam lists by other providers.  There really isn't much you can do about it.  I have to really pay attention to email from this account, some places block the domain, and all I can do is use another email account in that case.
