Hi, it's Annabelle.

Has anybody had this happen to them? I know this may be off topic, but this strange thing just started happening, where Outlook 2003 seems to think my CPU power is maxed out at 50% which makes the fan spin faster, and I'm wondering if maybe I should dust the inside of my machine with a Datavac. This has never happened before, and I know that I've been running outlook 2003 with the same Spamaid addin, so I know it has nothing to do with that. I tried turning off Microsoft Security Essentials, thinking it had something to do with that, but nothing has changed. I tried renaming "Outcmd.dat", but still nothing has changed. What do I do next?

I had one or two of those.
The synth it used was, I think, a variant of the same Texas Instrument chip
used in the Echo and other old synths. The Speak 'n' Spell was less
"robotic" sounding than what was available from Street Electronics --
probably had the phonemes programmed directly into it. You could still make
it make all sorts of weird noises though. Haha
You could probably emulate this on a pC if you knew how. I certainly don't.
I downloaded an Apple II E emulator with Echo speech just for kicks. Played
with it for a couple of months. I guess I don't really miss those days after
all, but, still pretty cool.

Hi,

yep, a Speak and Spell, popular in the mid to end 70s and in the 80s as
well.
It had cartridges with different vocabulary on it, but you couldn't really
use it as a computer synth. It was a stand-alone thing with some sort of
capacitive buttons for kids to learn how to spell, made by Texas
Instruments.
I think there even was a version with a complete Braille sheet to label all
the buttons and make it accessible.

Hi,

Without sighted assistance, How can you be sure it did not boot?

Some computers need a USB sound card in order for you to hear NVDA

while running the Windows PE.

If this is the case, you can get one from WalMart for around $10.

It is a version of windows that loads into RAM and you can
even remove the
boot media after it starts.
With this you can do repairs or install Windows, get on-line
and even
listen

to audio.
It also has a network scanner in this version to help you get
on-line.
You just cannot install to it because it will be gone on next

Yes, no password can be bypassed by taking out a small piece.
I still would like to know about Windows passwords and if
they can really
be
discovered as easily as Glen and some others here say they can.
As for Apple, what was said is correct. This case was when
those two
people
shot and killed a bunch of people during this Christmas
party I think in
California and I think it was now 2 years ago or maybe even 3.
Apple said they can't get into the iPhone which, by the way,
was not as
secure as today's iPhones are, and I think the FBI hired
some Israeli
company who tried to get in, millions were spent and I
honestly can't
remember if they succeeded or not.
As for the Face Id thing and a thief pointing it at you that
is only
correct
to some degree. If somebody snatched your iPhone and stuck
around all you
would have to do is cover your Face with your hands if you
are worried.
At
the same time if a thief stuck around they could just as
easily grab your
hand and put your finger on the Touch Id home button or,
even better, ask
you for the passcode. If somebody is that callus I doubt a
lot of people
would keep their passcode to themselves after a few slaps or
punches or
being shoved to the ground and kicked a few times which some
such thieves
probably have few scruples to do.
The fact is that even if he can unlock your phone once with
Face Id, he
has
to make sure it doesn't lock and having unlocked it with
Face Id or Touch
Id
won't do them any good if they want to reset the phone to
sell it or even
if
they want to get into it and disable or change the Face
Id/Touch Id/PIN
option. As soon as you go to Settings > Passcode you have to
enter you
passcode. Apple security is indeed very good, even if your
phone was
stolen
and they have your PIN, you could wipe the phone and
permanently disable
it
if you quickly log into iCloud and Find My iPhone also
cannot be disabled
without the passcode, the only way to stop it from working
is to turn off
the phone.

Id/Touch Id/PIN
option. As soon as you go to Settings > Passcode you have to
enter you
passcode. Apple security is indeed very good, even if your
phone was
stolen
and they have your PIN, you could wipe the phone and
permanently disable
it
if you quickly log into iCloud and Find My iPhone also
cannot be disabled
without the passcode, the only way to stop it from working
is to turn off
the phone.

I should add, I think that these need to connect to the Internet to update before they scan.
I don't think the two WinPE by Bryan Smart will connect to the Internet, unless perhaps they would over an Ethernet cable.
But the others that use eSpeak, have a network scanner and will connect to the Internet.
So do that first, before running the utilities.

Hi,
Since I offered the WinPE disks, one of the great things about running WinPE is that you can scan your hard drive without your operating system running.
Many viruses hide when you boot up and that is why some anti-virus programs do better in safe mode.
WinPE is even better than safe mode, because your hard drive is just a drive that is not active, and can easily be scanned.
I have two utilities for download.
These are called off-line scanners, that is that they download the latest virus database and scan your system.
The first one is Microsoft's:
https://od.lk/d/N18xNjU1NzY3MjFf/mssstool64.exe
And the second is Kasperski off-line scanner:
https://od.lk/d/N18xNjU1NzY4NTlf/KVRT.exe
The first one is a quick download, the second one will take a little longer.
I would run Microsoft's first and then try the Kasperski one.
So you can boot to WinPE and put these on a thumb drive, or you may be able to just run them from your C: drive.

be
discovered as easily as Glen and some others here say they can.
Id/Touch Id/PIN
option. As soon as you go to Settings > Passcode you have to
enter you
passcode. Apple security is indeed very good, even if your
phone was
stolen
and they have your PIN, you could wipe the phone and
permanently disable
it
if you quickly log into iCloud and Find My iPhone also
cannot be disabled
without the passcode, the only way to stop it from working
is to turn off
the phone.

Hi,
Since I offered the WinPE disks, one of the great things about running WinPE is that you can scan your hard drive without your operating system running.

Hi,

Without sighted assistance, How can you be sure it did not boot?

Some computers need a USB sound card in order for you to hear NVDA

while running the Windows PE.

If this is the case, you can get one from WalMart for around $10.

I put the Windows 10 Win PE in my Open Drive.
Here's a download link:
https://od.lk/d/N18xNjQyNDQ5Mjdf/Win10PE_x86.ISO
It is a version of windows that loads into RAM and you can
even remove the
boot media after it starts.
With this you can do repairs or install Windows, get on-line
and even
listen

to audio.
It also has a network scanner in this version to help you get
on-line.
You just cannot install to it because it will be gone on next
boot-up.

Yes you are definitely right, QRead along with his other products has terrible support. Having said that QRead has been my eBook reader for years now and hopefully will continue to be so despite the fact that development seems to have ended. I also find QCast from the same stable works well on my system for the time being. They are the best of a limited range available for us I think.

Chicken Nugget has bit the dust and QFeed has also stopped working for me.

I think he is a talented programmer but has dreadful commitment to updating his software.

We are disadvantaged that the market eBook leader, Calibre, persists doggedly with a reading interface inaccessible  to Screen Readers.

On the other hand When I think about it at least 50% of the  other programs I regularly used were stopped from developing years ago, I use older versions of many programs but touch wood are still going strong. For example CDex 1.71,  Mp3DirectCut and Mp3Gain. I think some people  are still using WinAmp even though it stopped development years ago. I hope that QRead will be in the same category.

Hi David,

Well, you are probably right about QRead and heading levels.  But, I did not find footnotes and internal hyperlinks accessible with it.  Mostly, these limitations apply to DAISY books.  However, the biggest problem with QRead is that it seems to have been abandoned and no longer supported.  Several months ago, an email I sent to them was never answered.  Others have likewise reported that it is no longer supported.

I have never used FS Reader for eBooks- it certainly cannot cope with any of the  ePub books  I have just tried it with. I don’t have access to any text based Daisy Books to test it with. Where  do you get these from??

I am however, slightly confused by you saying QRead cannot handle heading levels.

I have just checked again with some ePub books, and provided the books have a heading structure these are easily accessed in QRead as normal by pressing control H which brings up the list of heading and allows you to navigate to them.

Balabolka is a free TTS based eBook reader which has a radically different interface and learning curve. You can however also access headings in this, as from memory Balabolka  creates  automatic bookmarks of each heading which you access with the, from memory F2 key but I would have to go back and check this.

With any web links in eBooks I always copy these out anyway but I suspect you are talking about internal links?

Hi!

I am using JAWS 2019, fully updated.  I have a laptop running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, and a desktop running Windows 10 Pro 64 bit - both fully updated.

When running FS Reader 3 on either computer, if I press JAWSKey+DownArrow to “say all,” JAWS crashes, then restarts and then FS Reader freezes.  On the laptop with Windows 7, most often FS Reader and JAWS both crash after starting FS Reader and then trying to open a book.  Even if by some chance FS Reader opens the book on the laptop, it then crashes as previously described.

I have tried two different readers - Bookworm and QRead.  Neither seems good.  For example, neither seems to be able to read hyperlinked footnotes nor handle heading levels nor internal links - as does FS Reader (when working).  Primarily, this is all with DAISY eBooks; although I have also tried ePub and other formats all with the same problems.

So, does anyone have any recommendations for another DAISY reader?  Or, does anyone have any solution to these problems with FS Reader?

Thanks,

Richard

You can however also access headings in this, as from memory Balabolka  creates  automatic bookmarks of each heading which you access with the, from memory F2 key but I would have to go back and check this.

With any web links in eBooks I always copy these out anyway but I suspect you are talking about internal links?

Subject: FS Reader 3 Crashing

Thanks,

Richard

Bye,

Richard

I am sorry you have problems with  FS Reader but have heard other similarly complaining.  It does not sound like it is fit for purpose with eBooks.

I have never used FS Reader for eBooks- it certainly cannot cope with any of the  ePub books  I have just tried it with. I don’t have access to any text based Daisy Books to test it with. Where  do you get these from??

I am however, slightly confused by you saying QRead cannot handle heading levels.

It sounds like the old Double Talk voice, which is also on the Triple Talk hardware synth.
Not sure of course as it has been a long time since I used the hardware synth.

Hi,
I know that some of you really know all the synthesizers, and there is this synthesizer used in a Limp Bizkit song, it spells out limp.
I would like to know the name of the synth used.
I think it sounds like the one in the movie War Games but I'm not sure.
The link will download the song.

I wish there was a software synth that is like that.
Maybe I could work eSpeak to sound that way.

Hi,

yep, a Speak and Spell, popular in the mid to end 70s and in the 80s as well.
It had cartridges with different vocabulary on it, but you couldn't really use it as a computer synth. It was a stand-alone thing with some sort of capacitive buttons for kids to learn how to spell, made by Texas Instruments.
I think there even was a version with a complete Braille sheet to label all the buttons and make it accessible.
