Re: how to read highlighted text on web page
John Covici
I found a keystroke jaws+alt+s where I can change the scheme to read
the colors -- I don't know why it did not work when I tried to do it from the settings center, but it seems to work fairly well, only problem is that Jaws goes silent sometimes for 15-20 seconds after I hit jaws-to-pc hot key -- using Chrome. Thanks for everyones suggestion, I hope this works. On Sat, 13 Jun 2020 18:22:54 -0400, Dean Martineau wrote: -- Your life is like a penny. You're going to lose it. Dean Martineau <topdot@...>
I’ll be surprised if the ReadSelectedText hotkey, JAWSKey+Shift+down arrow identifies text that has been highlighted by a web developer or document author. The only keystroke that might work is JAWSKey+5 (on the number row) to identify color, and I’m not too optimistic about that either.

Jaws +f gives the font, but its the same, the colors are what is
different, and although the person says isomething was hilighted, that is what was meant. On Sat, 13 Jun 2020 14:37:10 -0400, Adrian Spratt wrote: -- Your life is like a penny. You're going to lose it. The question is: How do you spend it? John Covici wb2una covici@ccs.covici.com

Fortunately, Glenn posted what seems like the definitive answer, a keystroke that's new to me. However, for the record, I was suggesting JAWS key+f, not +F2. I can see how JAWS caused the confusion, with the word "to" following "f" in my post.

One thought is to place focus on each of the options and, in each case, press JAWS key+f to compare fonts, etc. This may be all you need. Otherwise, it may tell you how the highlighted text differs from the non-highlighted.

Hi again,
In that same edit box, you type rowtitle (one word, no spaces) if you only want to hear row titles. Type in columntitle (again, no spaces) if you only want to hear the column titles. If you ever get it messed up, hit Control F3 to bring you into the name manager where you can delete them and start over.

Hi,
Try pressing Windows A which brings you to the Actions Center. Then Tab to the list box of notifications. You should be able to down arrow through recent and read them notifications there.

Re: Rearranging columns in Mozilla Thunderbird
Sameer,
I also just found that someone mentioned the Podcast Audio Archive at Blind Geek Zone with regard to an audio tutorial on using Thunderbird. I went there, and it dates from 2007, but I don't think a thing has changed as far as changing column order in ages. It was mentioned as being discussed in part 1 of 2, but I did not listen and I do not know for certain if JAWS is used as the screen reader. A search on Thunderbird once you've navigated to that page will find the two podcasts, in parts 1 and 2. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1909, Build 18363 The purpose of education is not to validate ignorance but to overcome it.

Re: Rearranging columns in Mozilla Thunderbird
Sameer,
Do you, by any chance, also use NVDA (since many use more than one screen reader)? If so, consider installing the Mozilla Apps Enhancement add-on, and look at the documentation for it. There are keystrokes that make rearranging column order in Thunderbird much easier. Unless there's something new for JAWS, you still have to do it via emulated drag and drop, which is, to me, a PITA. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1909, Build 18363 The purpose of education is not to validate ignorance but to overcome it.

Mr. David:
Question for you regarding your “title” instructions: Block quote: 3. Type title in the edit box and press enter. Now you will hear column titles (the months) as you left and right arrow through the table, and row titles (the types of bills) as you up and down arrow. End block quote: What do I do differently in order to get only the row or the column titles to read, Instead of both? ;
Please advise as you like.

Hi,
This is much simpler to do using the Define Names command in Excel, rather than JAWS. 1. Go to the cell that is the intersection of the column and row titles you want read to you when navigating inside the table. For example, if you list bill items you want to pay down column A, and months you will be paying across row 2, start in cell A2. 2. Pres the applications key, up arrow ttwice to Define Names and press Enter. 3. Type title in the edit box and press enter.
Now you will hear column titles (the months) as you left and right arrow through the table, and row titles (the types of bills) as you up and down arrow.

Thanks for this. Mine is set for 5 minutes which really should be long enough even for me so I am not quite sure what is going on. I don’t know why but this Windows keystroke has never worked for me personally. It may be that there is a time limited opportunity to press the command and by the time I have got my fingers in place the notification has gone. The only keystroke which sometimes works for me is Windows A which takes me to the Action centre where some notifications will live. However even this is not consistent as sometimes notification windows like the annoying DropBox messages will not be located even with this method. Thankfully DropBox seem to have finally got the message I don’t want warnings of any kind from them.

Hi Steve,
Perhaps you could try this:
When you hear the Windows 10 notifications jingle, press the <windows+shift+v> keystroke in order to focus to the notification and then, press <space> or <enter> key to interact with it.
Please note that the <windows+shift+v> key combination is not a screen reader-specific keystroke. In other words, it is always available in Windows 10.
HTH, have a nice week-end. Chris D
