What three channel mixer do you own? I might be interested in buying from

The 3 channel mixer I got from Amazon works perfectly. I have JAWS running
through one channel and Zoom running through the computer speakers and if
I want I can hear both at the same time. It even has a microphone jack which I
used as a test and recorded a zoom meeting. The host is narcistic and does not
like any of her imperfections repeated. Thus when a meeting is put to print or
notes, all of her flaws are taken out. The sad thing is though, some important
info is left out as well. Oh, well, no one is perfect and being a facilitator takes
training.

I have had many problems with those USB sound cards and Jaws -- a lot of it
was hum -- I connect the phone jack to a mixer I have and I tried many usb
sound cards and I had to actually get a dac to solve my hum problem -- a lot
more expensive but it actually worked.

Bonnie,

That's only a partial model number.  The only thing I can find using it is:

IdeaPad,IdeaPad 3 14ADA05,Model:81W0006KMH - Lenovo

If it is an IdeaPad then you would need a sighted assistant to handle getting into BIOS and doing the following, since there is no screen reader support without an operating system running, and BIOS is before operating system startup in any boot sequence.

Lenovo-branded products:

  1. Access the BIOS (method to enter BIOS in Windows 8.1Windows 10).
  2. Once in the BIOS menu, select the Configuration tab.
  3. Select Hotkey Mode and set to Disabled.
  4. Save and Exit the BIOS menu (press F10 and then Enter).

Thank you I didn't know that about the ThinkPad. When I was recently buying a laptop I was in Best Buy moving from computer to computer testing this out and the Lenovo I tried must not have been an ThinkPad and I assumed all computers from the same brand were the same.

That is not entirely true. If the Lenovo is a ThinkPad the FN + Escape key works as well. I have two different models of the ThinkPad Lenovo and this combination works. However, the Lenovo Ideal Pad does required a different method. Thanks, for letting us know about the Dell and Asus I did not know you could use that combination.

The FN key is 3 to the left of the space bar. You'll need to use it each time you use a function key. If your laptop is a Dell or Asus, you can toggle what these function keys do by pressing Function Escape. If it's an HP or Lenovo you'll need to go into the bios.

Hi everyone,
I recently got a new laptop and have installed fusion 2021. The start up wizard did not ask me about laptop or desktop layout. Nothing is working the way I expect it to, including alt F4 does not close anything. Do I need to change the layout, and how do I do that? I have tried to find it in the help topics, but can’t find anything. I can’t even get a context menu to open up using the alt key. Help! Thank you.

Yes, you would have to use the F N key along with the JAWS key and whatever function key.  If it was normally JAWS+F6 it would require JAWS+F N+F6.

However, most people simply turn off the media keys feature on laptops if they're going to be using a screen reader, and that's whether they prefer (or must use, due to lack of a number pad) the laptop or desktop layout for JAWS or any other screen reader.

From Lenovo Support:

You may want to disable the hotkey functionality of the function keys (F1, F2, and so on) in Windows 8.1/10, to avoid having to press Fn to use the function. The methods differ by models: (help me to find my product name/serial number).

Note:
For some models like Yoga 900s or Yoga 910, hotkey settings have been removed from the BIOS configuration. Use Lenovo Settings to configure.

This is almost certainly not the result of the keyboard layout chosen by default (generally desktop), but of the laptop having its function keys mapped to media and other control functions by default.  You do not mention the make and model, so I can't offer any specific assistance to change that such that they act like function keys instead without it.

The F N key is generally on the lower left side of a US keyboard, most often the second key in on the lowest row.  The most common order, from leftmost until you hit spacebar, is CTRL, F N, Windows Key, ALT, then spacebar.

Hm, yes, I think the counter has been around for a really long time -- at least since 2010, when I think it was that I purchased the thing. Wow, that was a long time ago, now.

Some people on these lists recommend MP3 Direct Cut. I've never really been convinced to use it as I like GW and if I go to another audio editor, it's probably going to be Reaper at this point. But you could try and see if it suits your needs. It definitely doesn't have a lot of features but depending on how much editing you want to do, it might be good enough.
Otherwise, try Audacity? It's very functional, multi-track, and free. Not necessarily the easiest thing to get your head around; the interface is weird and the processing a bit slow. My podcast cohost, who does most of the tech stuff, insists that it's badly programmed. However I remember having success with it several years back. There's also a fair amount of documentation, including the VIP software guide for screen-reader users.

I thought that the demo of gold wave only brought up the help file when launched, but now it has a counter and it stops working after 200 actions, so I need another audio editor.
GW is 60 dollars to purchase, or 20 dollars per year.
That is more than I want to spend, more like 20 dollars for the unlimited time would be more like it for me.
So another recommendation would be good.

If you have a lot of files use gold wave. It does batch conversions. The free demo is fully functional for 30 days. Well, at least it used to be.
I haven't used it for awhile.

Hi Glenn,

You might give Pazera Free Audio Extractor a try. It will definitely convert ogg files to mp3 and I believe it will also convert oga. You can check it out at this site:

https://www.pazera-software.com/products/audio-extractor/

Be careful with the download links on that page because like so many free software sites, the largest and earliest download link presented is to something other than the program featured on that page. Here are two good download links to pick from:

1. Windows 32-bit installer: https://www.pazera-software.com//get/?pid=162 <https://www.pazera-software.com/get/?pid=162&ft=w32i&dlt=fh&r&f=Pazera_Free_Audio_Extractor.exe> &ft=w32i&dlt=fh&r&f=Pazera_Free_Audio_Extractor.exe

2. Windows 64-bit portable: https://www.pazera-software.com//get/?pid=162 <https://www.pazera-software.com/get/?pid=162&ft=w64p&dlt=fh&r&f=Pazera_Free_Audio_Extractor_64bit_PORTABLE.zip> &ft=w64p&dlt=fh&r&f=Pazera_Free_Audio_Extractor_64bit_PORTABLE.zip

The only other download link provided was to a Windows 32-bit portable version but I did not include that one.

Pazera is very accessible and its user interface is similar to other conversion programs. You add the files you wish to convert to its main window and select the format to convert to. There are various options and settings. They also have helpful instructional material about program use on their site.

I hope this helps.

Hi David,

Does that mean you can hear Jaws when you're sharing your screen
with sound whilst showing a video, without Jaws being heard by
the other meeting participants?

That's exactly the way I did it with a 3 channel mixer I got from
Amazon, it works great. I can hear the Zoom conference yet hear
Jaws through my hearing aids, if I want. Sometimes I don't want
to hear who left or join the meeting.

I use a usb sound adaptor and have a wireless headset base
plugged in to it and I have been using this setup for over two
years. once you have your setup installed, press insert plus j
then down arrow to utilities and then to sound cards and press
enter.select the device you wish to use with JAWS and press
enter. the selection should stay once selected.

Hi, Randy. This works for some, but many who try to use this search feature automatically are presented with web results. This makes it difficult to know for whom this will work. This is why I give the steps that will work for most people.

A faster way to get there is to press the start key and type update then press enter on check for updates that will skip steps 1 through 3 and go directly to step 4.

1. Open Settings, Windows key plus I.

2. TAB to the categories list, and select Update and Security, press ENTER.

3. TAB to the list of categories, and select Windows Update, press ENTER.

4. TAB past the Check for Updates button, and see if there is a Download and Install link.

5. If there is a Download and Install link, read your screen with JAWS key plus B, and listen to see if the update is described as a Feature Update.

6. If it is a Feature Update, it will probably be version 20H1 or 20H2.

7. Even if it turns out to be 20H1, after you install it, you will probably soon get the update for 20H2.

How exactly do I find this out?

Yesterday, I got some sort of an update to Windows version 1909, so I am assuming auto-updates is already turned on.

I guess I’m just thinking that Windows 10 version 2004 will come to my computer in time.

Hi, Tom. If you have an update in your windows updates that says download and install, that is the 20H2 update, waiting for you to download and install it.

It’s interesting.

This Windows 10 computer is still back on Windows version 1909.

I have thought about forcing the update, but have decided to just let it happen when it will.

If this is unwise, I hope someone will let me know.

Richard,

Don't force the issue.  Windows will send you the update in due time.  I don't know what criteria they use as to who and what computers get the updates but, if you haven't received the, 20H2, update yet Microsoft is finding a reason to not send you the update and updating prematurely could cause adverse reactions to your operating system or in other words,be a total pain in the ass!

Richard,

You're running an older version.  The latest is, 20H2, not 2004, and it's OS version 19042.685.  This newer 20H2 version is using 19042 where the older 2004 versions are at 19041.

I have 2004 OS build 1941.685, it was 1941.630.

Are you sure about the 1942 part of that number?

Brian, Here’s what I found:

December 8, 2020—KB4592438 (OS Builds 19041.685 and 19042.685)

Applies to: Windows 10, version 2004, all editionsWindows Server version 2004Windows 10, version 20H2, all editions More

It didn’t say the update was or was not successful. I assume it was.

Am I the only one who got this one?

And if things don't settle down, it will be important to know what update(s) were applied.  Presuming this is Windows 10, you can determine that in Settings, Update & Security, Windows Update Pane, using the View Update History button.  The most likely pertinent candidates are either under Feature Updates (less likely, but possible) or Quality Updates.  The "Successfully installed on" line will give you the respective dates.

I have a friend who purchased a new computer last January. It came with 19-09 installed. His machine has not been updated from 19-09 as yet.

There seems to be no logic as to how Microsoft's update utility and system works in deciding which systems should receive updates and when.

I still have one HP Envy laptop that has remained on Version 1909, and Windows Update is definitely not broken, as the 2020-12 cumulative update to version 1909 showed up for it either yesterday or today, I don't remember when I first saw it.

Two other HP laptops I have, including this one, went to 20H2 one month ago, tomorrow.  Feature Update roll outs are generally a months long affair and, in certain cases, this being one of them, a feature update may be skipped on a given machine.  I doubt that Envy will ever see Version 2004.
