Re: Retriving Authorization code

Adrian Spratt

FS distributed an authorization disc with an earlier version of JAWS. I wonder if they'd be willing to send them on request. The disc's sleeve had a braille label with my authorization code on it.

I just checked, the JAWS authorization key number is not displayed. There
is the serial number and then there is a locking code, which is the code you
are given once you enter the authorization number as you install JAWS.

You can retrieve the Authorization code, if you go through the authorization

it somewhere.

It sounds more and more like JAWS 16 is equivalent to Windows 8 in terms of frustrations. I hope 17 is going to overcome these problems.

Unfortunately, the release notes for this update are very generic; all
FS says is that it corrects an issue that had been made known to the
company through automatic error reporting. While this suggests that the
update is minor, the timing of its release is quite thought-provoking,
as it hasn't been too long since the previous update came out. Besides,
why would FS release an update that addresses only one issue? To my
knowledge, this has never happened before.

Re: Retriving Authorization code

Mcginnis, Barbara

I just checked, the JAWS authorization key number is not displayed. There is the serial number and then there is a locking code, which is the code you are given once you enter the authorization number as you install JAWS.

You can retrieve the Authorization code, if you go through the authorization process. That is, if you have already authorized JAWS. Normally, the code will display. If it were me, I would copy and paste it from there, and save it somewhere.

JAWS only restarted once on me after downloading the update yesterday. Maybe it's more stable now. About time!

I suspect the problem that they corrected was the problem where JAWS for Windows was restarting over three times a day. At least I have not seen this on my machine. Since the latest update, and I was seeing it very frequently before the update.

Unfortunately, the release notes for this update are very generic; all FS says is that it corrects an issue that had been made known to the company through automatic error reporting. While this suggests that the update is minor, the timing of its release is quite thought-provoking, as it hasn't been too long since the previous update came out. Besides, why would FS release an update that addresses only one issue? To my knowledge, this has never happened before.

Re: Excel shortcut for autofit?

Tom Lange

Hi,
I dislike the so-called virtual ribbons for that very reason and encourage all of my students to avoid using virtual ribbons like the plague. All they do is isolate you from the interface that's intended by Microsoft, key tips and all. The virtual ribbons, in my view, were designed to satisfy the needs of those users who were resistant to switching from the old-style drop-down menus and submenus of Office 2003 and who had a knee-jerk reaction to an entirely new interface that, in my opinion, has worked quite well since Office 2007 was released and has, also in my opinion, stood the test of time.

Paul,

I believe you are correct. You cannot have both. I personally do not like
the Virtual menus, because they do not support first-letter navigation as do
standard menus. Therefore I stick to the ribbon and just learn how to use
it.

Thanks, everyone.

Now here's a slightly related question. MS has their own keyboard interface
for the ribbon UI, as in "Alt then H, O, I". But you can also turn on the
JAWS rinnon UI to make the ribbon feel more like a system of menus and
submenus. I can see how both might be useful, but they seem to be mutually
exclusive. When I turn on the JAWS ribbon UI, the MS ribbon keyboard
inbterface seems to stop working.

Does anyone know how to set up JAWS so that both the MS interface and the
JAWS interface to the ribbon UI are available? Then I could choose to use
one or the other interface, depending on which is most convenient, personal
preference, etc.

My guess is that this is simply not possible. I have to choose one or the
other.
-Paul

Re: JAWS Not Reading Links

Robert Logue

Are you using Firefox or IE?
I find sometimes focus is moved to some strange place and nothing is read by Jaws. So I press f6 to attempt to get focus back on the page. Sometimes in Firefox, pressing shift+tab after a search will get focus back to the page by moving to a "location" button.

A good place to show how this works is youtube. The virtual cursor gets turned off all by it's self at times or focus gets stuck on the Firefox command bars.

I had this issue with JAWS 14 and 15, but JAWS 16 seemed to fix everything.
However, a day or two ago, it started to do the same thing.

For example, I would type in a search term and press the enter key and the
information would appear on the screen as usual. But JAWS would not read it.
It would not recognize links, headings, combo boxes, etc. In short, it would
ignore the information generated by the search. It reads the information
that was present on the screen before the search, but not the result. I did
get a message saying that there are no aria controls on the page. I should
mention that the result is present on the screen and that a sighted person
has no difficulty using it.

I am using JAWS 16, Windows 7, I.E. 11.

Thanks for your help.

I have Avira on both my laptop and desktop, and I like it because unlike
most antivirus programs, it does not use a lot of computer resources.
Consequently, it doesn't impact overall system performance. The only
problem is that it has recently become inaccessible because it no longer
runs in a normal window. Fortunately, I don't have to mess with its
interface, as it seems to block potential threats automatically.

Does it compare favorably to something like AVG?

Hi Tom. I have a blind friend who uses a program called Avira. It is
free from what I understand. Just a suggestion. From what I have
heard about AVG, you made a good decision to get rid of that program.
It has caused problems for friends of mine who use JAWS. Hope this helps!

Hello, everyone.

You may recall that, a few days ago, I was having trouble with a
program on my computer running in the background, and interfering with
Jaws.

Originally, I thought the problem was with Java.

Apparently, the problem was not with Java, but was with the latest
version of the AVG anti-virus software. I think the version number is
AVG
15.

Last night, an AVG update occurred, which literally made Jaws totally
unusable.

I've now completely uninstalled AVG, and Jaws works perfectly.

Has anyone else had this problem with AVG, and if so, how did you deal
with it?

If AVG is not the most Jaws-friendly anti-virus program to be using
with Jaws, does someone have recommendations for a more Jaws-friendly
anti-virus program?

I'd prefer to stick with free anti-virus software if possible.

Any help would be appreciated, since I am not comfortable running this
computer without anti-virus software.

For the record, I'm using Jaws 14 on this windows 7 computer.

Dr. Tom Behler from Michigan

If you really want to do it, go in and alter your profile's voice adjustments. I don't know how comments would be classified, though.

There may be, but why do you want to do this? To me, it makes perfect sense that JAWS reads comments in a different voice, as it makes it easier to distinguish them from the body of the main text.

Hi again,

I have one more question regarding track changes. When I arrow through my document, and come to a line that has a comment, the Jaws voice changes to Rocko when reading the comment. Is there a way to prevent the Jaws voice from changing when it reads a comment?

Thanks,

Russell

I just reviewed Paul's very thorough tips on using track changes in Word.
I
think I was in that thread with Paul, and I cannot think of a thing

You should know that turning on the quick access keys with JAWS key
plus z is pretty much useless in large documents. So, don't rely on
that.
Also, don't rely on JAWS to give you the colors of the added and
deleted text. In the end, that's not all that important because the
colors depend on everyone's computer. So a deletion that is in red
on your computer may be green on someone else's computer.
In the verbosity settings, turning on "count" is crucial. That way
you'll know if there has been a change in a line if you are reading
by line.
This
is not too reliable if you are jumping by paragraph. JAWS won't
always tell you when an entire paragraph has been deleted if you are
jumping through a document with control plus down arrow.
Paul is also right about sighted users having some of the same
problems, especially in identifying who made what changes. JAWS will
actually announce the names. Sighted users have to jump through way
more hoops to figure out who made what change -- particularly when
there have been 4 or
5
people editing a document.
Good luck.
Ps
As frustrating as JAWS is on track changes, the other screen readers
either don't attempt to follow track changes or do so crudely.

Hi Kimber,

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions… very helpful. You
and Paul suggest the same trick of using the Quick Access toolbar… a
great idea.

Take care,

Track changes are, quite honestly, a pain in the butt with any
version of jaws. It can be done, but you will need patience and perseverance.

Now having said that, what I've done is place accept and reject
changes on the quick access toolbar so I can use control key
combinations to perform these functions. The whole operation is
still a bit clunky, and there are times when you will need to use
your jaws functions to list revisions and the like. But it can be done.

Hi everyone,

What is the most efficient way to use track changes in MS Word 2013
or
2007 using Jaws 16? It seems a little tedious to bring up a list of
revisions with shift + Insert + R and then work through all the
listed insertions and deletions one by one, especially in a long
document. Is there a way to accept or reject a change and then jump
directly to the next revision and so on without having to bring up
the list again?

Any suggestions for using track changes more efficiently would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks all.
