AVAST tutorial or ??

Morey Worthington

Morning all.
Is there an AVAST tutorial or some directions on how to use AVAST with Jaws 16? I have just installed it, AVAST, and Jaws brings up menus, but now what??
Does it just do its thing in the background?

Thanks for any help.

Portability, fitting both laptop and keyboard in computer bag. Takes up less space. Gives off less heat. Quieter running. Has own speakers. That's just off the top of my head without much thought.

Re: Cannot access time or the system tray

hello give this a try;

Change the Function key behavior using the Windows Mobility Center.

To open the Windows Mobility Center, press WinKey+X to open the WinX Menu
and select Mobility Center. Alternatively, open Run box, type mblctr and hit
Enter.
Goes without saying that you can also access it via Control Panel > Hardware
and Sound > Windows Mobility Center > Adjust commonly used mobility
settings.

Change Function key behavior
use the tab key,
Under Function Key Row, from the drop-down menu, select Function key instead
of Multimedia key.

In this way, you will be able to interchange, swap or inverse keyboard
Function and Multi-media keys on Dell laptops.
hope this helps.

The advantages are these, perhaps among others: If one suffers from dexterity challenges, as do I, the larger keys are more comfortable, The lap top key strokes are more cumbersome for one with such challenges than the traditional desk top keyboard layout. also, there are dedicated keys such as the application key, one doesn't have to learn new key strokes to accomplish.

Dr. Tom, I would say the free version of Avast should serve your needs well
at home. The paid version may offer more features, but if all you want is
virus protection, the free version should be fine. I'm glad to hear that
your Windows machine is free of malware now. Malware Bytes is a good
program and should serve your needs well moving forward.

Subject: Update On Windows 7 Home Computer Situation

Hello, everyone.

As some of you may recall, I had been having multiple problems with my main
Windows 7 home computer. As a result of the many very helpful suggestions
that I have received from a number of list members, both on and off list, I
think I have finally gotten the computer back up and running.

First, with the help of an I T technician from my University, Malwarebytes
has been installed and run several times. As a result, I believe I have now
finally gotten rid of those audio clips that were randomly appearing from
time to time.

Regarding my Outlook 2010 issue, where Outlook was often not launching
correctly, and Jaws was extremely sluggish, I conpacted the .pst Outlook
data file. As some had warned, this took very long, but that file is now
much more manageable in size. Specifically, it has been reduced from its
original 10 gig size to approximately 730 megabytes. In addition, based on
a suspicion that my A V G anti-virus software was conflicting with Outlook,
I uninstalled that program, and have gone to the free version of Avast, at
least for now. This seems to work well, and does not appear to be creating
any issues of concern. In fact, Outlook, Avast, and Jaws seem to play very
nicely together.

I still have a few things to decide:

1. Do I continue with the free version of Avast, or purchase the more
robust program?

2. Do I try to delete Outlook add-ins, and the journal, or just leave well
enough alone for now?; and

3. How often do I want to schedule the compacting of that Outlook PST file
that gave me all the trouble?

Anyway, I'm making progress now, and appreciate all of the help that I have
received regarding the difficulties I was having.

Sincerely,

Dr. Tom Behler from Michigan

Portability. You can't just pick up and take your desktop with you if the
need or desire arises. You can always disconnect the keyboard from the
laptop if need be. Also, if you do a lot of work on the lapttop, it's
probably just more convenient to have a full keyboard.

Portability, fitting both laptop and keyboard in computer bag. Takes up less space. Gives off less heat. Quieter running. Has own speakers. That's just off the top of my head without much thought.

I use the desktop keyboard because the laptop keyboard is small,my

so I recommend you switch from one to the other and go with the one
that is best for you . Roy Dubriel

Re: Update On Windows 7 Home Computer Situation

Michael Mote

Sincerely,

Dr. Tom Behler from Michigan

that is very informative. thank you very much. i am going to get a usb keyboard so i can stay with the desktop layout. i am not going to be using this machine as a primary computer so i really don't wan't to have to memorize all the other keystrokes for jaws that seam quite different on a laptop. thanks for your input.

The one thing I find annoying with my HP laptop is that it does not
have the context menu key. I have used a utility to remap the print
screen key to perform that function but it is certainly not as
convenient as a proper context menu key. My guess, however, is that a
windows 7 laptop is probably old enough that it would have this key,
so long as you are talking about a full size laptop and not a compact
model.

Re: new laptop user with jaws 16

Actually I was not aware of that one. <Chagrin>.

Still not as nice as a real context menu key. Probably not even as
nice as my remapped print screen since it requires hitting two keys.
Prior to this laptop I had not even encountered a laptop with an
actual print screen key, it has always been an Fn key combo before
(the print screen key takes the place of a second ins key next to the
del in the row that makes up the normal six-pack).

What is even more frustrating is that this laptop is slightly wider
than my prior one so the space is there, but the keyboard is smashed
into a narrower area. It simply has pretty large margins to the left
and right of the keyboard.
