Hi,

I have the same issue with Word 2013 and Jaws 15 and 16. Pressing insert + T results in Jaws saying “Print view”, but it doesn’t read the title. To find out the title, I must alt tab away and back to the document. Very Annoying.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Russell

Well, the Control lasts as long as I need it, until the next reading or editing session, but that's great to know.

With so much good Internet advice flying around on this list lately, I
thought I would raise a question that has been bugging me.

I use PlaceMarkers frequently, especially with Web applications that I
use all the time, including a document management Web App that I access
(keep loaded all the time) daily.

I'm wondering if there is a strategy to ensure that PlaceMarkers always
work. Frankly, the PlaceMarkers I have set tend to remain, but the k
key, which is supposed serially to jump from placeMarker to PlaceMarker
often skips PlaceMarkers that I know are there.
Sometimes, after JAWS has skipped over a PlaceMarker I can hit shift K
to go backwards, and sometimes JAWS will find the shy PlaceMarker.
Sometimes it does not.

Years ago, I had the same problem with WindowEyes, and have been
assuming that PlaceMarkers are just flakey and not terribly reliable
because of the peculiarities of the Net.

No one has told me that, and it occurred to me that I perhaps am doing
something wrong.

Here is what I do:

1. Press Control plus windows plus K

2. Choose Add PlaceMarker

3. accept the default name, link to text, use the default text (if I
know it is going to be constant), and choose domain only if I know the
element will always be on screen within the application.

Linking to text seems like it ought to increase the reliability of the
PlaceMarker, but I do not think that is true. Is it possible that the
opposite is true?

I think I'm making the right choice in indicating when it should be
linked to the domain instead of the specific page, but perhaps my
thinking is backwards.

If everyone else has the same reliability issues, then I'll continue
with my thought that PlaceMarkers are just flakey.

Hi Ed,

I don't know the reason(s) behind your use of placemarkers, but your
thinking regarding placemarker reliability may, in fact, be backwards. I
use placemarkers within Internet Explorer, primarily on web pages I visit
frequently, where it is difficult to find the main content. For example,
some news sites don't have "skip to content" links, mark the start of
articles with a heading or ARIA region, or offer the ability to press the
letter n to skip to the next non-link block of texts efficiently due to
multiple lists of links at the top of the page. Therefore, it can be
useful
to create a "main content" placemarker on these sites to facilitate
navigation. In this situation, it is necessary to assign the placemarker
to
the entire domain, but anchoring it to specific text defeats the purpose
of
the placemarker, since the start of the main content likely contains
different text on each page within the website (e.g. article title). I
hope this helps.

Michal

question about cursor tracking in MS Word with Magic and Jaws

Amy Bower

Hi again -

I'm wondering if anyone else using Magic and Jaws simultaneously has any
issues with cursor tracking in MS Word (in Office 2010 or Office 2013). I'm
finding that sometimes, the cursor is not tracked/followed when I'm
navigating word-to-word or line-to-line, but only if I do a SayAll. Under
the Magic tracking options, I have all the radio buttons on "center" as
opposed to "edge". I also have "track cursors...." checked. I've checked
that I have the default theme and display size(100%). Any other suggestions
welcome, offline please, at abower@whoi.edu. Thanks much.

-Amy B.

question about accessible text editors for scripting

Amy Bower

Hi All - I'm looking for an accessible text editor (Windows) for writing
program scripts (specifically for Matlab, which is somewhat like C but
unique to Matlab). I've tried EdSharp and it works pretty well, but looking
for something else that is updated. I use both Jaws and Magic, and need the
editor to work with both simultaneously. I've looked into UltraEdit, and as
others have reported, it seems to work well with Jaws, but Magic only
tracked the cursor in SayAll, not when I move word to word or line to line.
Whatever editor I use has to have a Go To Line command for debugging. I
think that rules out Notepad and Wordpad. I've read that Notepad++ is not
that accessible. I looked into emacs and emacspeak, but these seemd to have
steep learning curves. Not that interested in them.

Suggestions welcome, offline please, at abower@whoi.edu.

Thanks.

-Amy B.

P.S. I'm running on two Windows 7, 64-bit platforms, one has Magic 12, Jaws
16 and MS Office 12, and the other has Magic 13, Jaws 16 and MS Office 2013.

Re: Title of MS Word Document

Michael B. <mb69mach1@...>

Hi Kevin,

I was reading a tutorial by David Bales at;

http://goo.gl/uu3XW

In this tutorial he talks about using the, Windows Key + Up Arrow keystroke
for maximizing windows. Apparently in Windows7 you can invoke this
keystroke on any window you want to maximize & Windows7 will maximize the
window & remember the setting so you don't have to maximize it again. This
maximize keystroke only maximizes the window during the current session of
the computer use. It won't remember the maximized window after a reboot or
restart. Hope this helps. Take care.

You can also set MS Word so it's maximized whenever you open it by doing the
following:
if you want to have MS Word open in the maximized state whenever it's
opened,
go into the MS Word shortcut properties/shortcut page,
set the, run combo box, to maximize, apply & okay. Now Word should open in
the maximized state every time you open it, if opening using the shortcut
icon.
no need for the windows-key+up or down arrow for maximizing / minimizing.

Take care.

For what it's worth, Insert T reads MS Word document titles here with no problem. I'm using Jaws 14 and Microsoft office 2010 on a Windows 7 64-bit computer.

It would be interesting to check on my windows 7 64-bit office laptop, which uses Jaws 16 with office 2010, which I will do when I think of it later.

It does on some machines, but not on others. As I previously mentioned, I use Word 2013, and JAWS reads the entire title bar correctly.

This sounds like a reason to contact FS tech support. JAWS is reading the last part of the title that it still reads correctly in Word 2010. So it seems the JAWS insert-t command is no longer capturing the entire field of desired information in Word 2013.

Hi Kevin,

The title of the Word window normally includes the title of the document.
Apologies the suggestion didn't help.

Kind regards,
