Re: You need to update Skype. NOT!

Michal Nowicki <mnowicki4@...>

I close Skype from the Task Bar because Alt F4 doesn't work for me either.
Other then that, however, the program works well for me; I use JAWS 16 and
Windows 8.1. One setting I recommend changing, though, is unchecking the
"Skype Home" option in the view menu. If checked, this setting makes screen
reader navigation more difficult because parts of the Skype website appear
in the program.

Yes, you can do a "new" install without having to first remove the old version. If you are able, I recommend first removing the version with the bug in it, but sometimes the bug has the side effect of blocking the uninstall program.

Hi All,

Just to add my two cents worth, I would not bother with the repair option, just do a new installation. My purely anecdotal experience is that the repair never works, and Freedom Scientific ends up thereafter recommending doing a new clean install; this has happened to me probably 5 or 6 times over the years. Frankly, the new install goes more quickly than the repair option, so I wonder why they bother with the repair.

Re: JAWS Repair David Whitehead 12/23/2013 9:33… xpc

The steps below are the best, most in depth, and most thorough way of
repairing Jaws according to Freedom Scientific Tech Support.
Note; jaws11 is the example, however, this will work for 12 13 14 15.
1. Place a copy of the Jaws executible version that you want to repair into
the main root of the " C " drive. For example; If you are running Jaws11
most recent you would paste a copy of " J11.0.1430-32bit.exe " into the main
root of the " C " drive. To open the main root of the " C " drive, go to
the desktop, press enter on My Computer, press enter on Local disk C, and
now you have the main root of the " C " drive open.
2. With the Jaws " .exe " pasted into the "C" drive, highlight the " .exe ",
and press F2 as if you were going to edit this line of text. now press
control + C to copy this Jaws executible, press escape to close the edit
field, and press Alt + F4 to close the C drive.
What you want to do is place just the title of the Jaws version into the
Windows Run Dialogue box and not the file. If you were to place the Jaws
executable into the Run box without copying as you did as per the
instructions above you would have pasted the whole file into the Run Box
instead of just the title.
3. Now that you have just the title copied to the clipboard, press Windows
key + R to open the Run Dialogue Box. Type, remember to type a capitalC ,"
C:\ " without the quotes or
spaces and press control + V to paste the Jaws title, press your end key to
take the cursor to the end of the title and type in the following " /type
repair" without the quotes but, with the spaces . Below is what your line
of text should look / read like.

C:\J15.0.5056ENU-64bit.exe /type repair

Read character by character to make sure you have put in the proper spaces,
Forward & back slashes and text. press the home key to go to the front of
the title and press enter to start the repair.

It has worked on my last too computers. Some of the women in my card groups can't open my attachments. I, being the leader, have to send updates occasionally, and I patch the whole file into the body of the e-mail - away it goes, and they can read them. When we have someone new, the attachment is pretty long.

This surprises me. I didn’t know one could paste attachments right into the body of an email message. Is this something new? This is the way I’ve been doing attachments on my Mac for the past 6 years, but never knew it was possible in Windows and Outlook. Does this only work in outlook 2013?

Thanks,

I had the same issue with not being able to close Skype after installing. I’m running Windows 8.1 as well, and wonder if we inadvertently installed the Windows App version of Skype instead of the full desktop version? I’m not to clear as to whether or not there are Windows Apps for all programs or not. Just a thought. I hardly use Skype, so not sure if it’s working or not… just installed the update because a window came up prompting me to update Skype, so I did.

I have never been a big fan of Skype, but the new features in
Skype, as advertised in an email message I received having a
subject line similar to the above, made it tempting.

So, I read further. Apparently, the old Skype will no longer be
supported.

Being one always willing to jump for the bleeding edge, I gave it
a try. In fairness, I didn't try to work with it for very long,
but this has to rank right up there with the most inaccessible
products I've seen on the market in the last decade. The thing
brings up a list of options that one can read, but none of them
works. Even worse, Skype hangs around and cannot be removed even
with Alt-F4. I almost entitled this message, "Is Skype really a
virus?" Fortunately, after going to the Control Panel, it was
fairly easy to get rid of the thing. Now, my computer is working
normally, but I really thought I had inadvertently introduced a
virus to my computer (Windows 8.1). I'm using JAWS 16.

So, except for those with some sight (probably quite a bit) and
those with psychological needs to inflict punishment upon
themselves, I would recommend to people that they bypass the
tempting advertisements in the Skype email message that is likely
to appear in your Inbox soon - if it has not appeared already.

almost entitled this message, "Is Skype really a virus?" Fortunately,
after going to the Control Panel, it was fairly easy to get rid of the
thing. Now, my computer is working normally, but I really thought I
had inadvertently introduced a virus to my computer (Windows 8.1).
I'm using JAWS 16.

So, except for those with some sight (probably quite a bit) and those
with psychological needs to inflict punishment upon themselves, I
would recommend to people that they bypass the tempting advertisements
in the Skype email message that is likely to appear in your Inbox soon
- if it has not appeared already.

Re: question about accessible text editors for scripting

Hi Amy,

Just getting into programming myself so only using notepad at present, but
would be interested to hear if anyone came back to you with any suggestions
for good text editors as notepad does the job for me but I'm sure there are
better programs out there.

Subject: question about accessible text editors for scripting

Hi All - I'm looking for an accessible text editor (Windows) for writing
program scripts (specifically for Matlab, which is somewhat like C but
unique to Matlab). I've tried EdSharp and it works pretty well, but looking
for something else that is updated. I use both Jaws and Magic, and need the
editor to work with both simultaneously. I've looked into UltraEdit, and as
others have reported, it seems to work well with Jaws, but Magic only
tracked the cursor in SayAll, not when I move word to word or line to line.
Whatever editor I use has to have a Go To Line command for debugging. I
think that rules out Notepad and Wordpad. I've read that Notepad++ is not
that accessible. I looked into emacs and emacspeak, but these seemd to have
steep learning curves. Not that interested in them.

Suggestions welcome, offline please, at abower@whoi.edu.

Thanks.

-Amy B.

P.S. I'm running on two Windows 7, 64-bit platforms, one has Magic 12, Jaws
16 and MS Office 12, and the other has Magic 13, Jaws 16 and MS Office 2013.

Where did you get the Skype scripts?

I have used Skype once or twice, but with sighted assistance, and want to be
able to do so independently.

I use Jaws 14 on my Windows 7 home computer, and Jaws 16 with Windows 7 on
my work laptop.

I have never been a big fan of Skype, but the new features in Skype,
as advertised in an email message I received having a subject line
similar to the above, made it tempting.

So, I read further. Apparently, the old Skype will no longer be
supported.

Being one always willing to jump for the bleeding edge, I gave it a
try. In fairness, I didn't try to work with it for very long, but
this has to rank right up there with the most inaccessible products
I've seen on the market in the last decade. The thing brings up a

This surprises me. I didn’t know one could paste attachments right into the
body of an email message. Is this something new? This is the way I’ve been
doing attachments on my Mac for the past 6 years, but never knew it was
possible in Windows and Outlook. Does this only work in outlook 2013?

Thanks,

I'd paste the picture at the top, press Enter, write the message, then send
it. The reason for this is that, if you paste the picture at the top, after
doing a tab from Subject, you can then do a shift tab back and see if your
attachment is there, before you even write your message.

Hi Bill,

Thanks. I mostly use a Mac at home now, and at work we use Groupwise for email, so I guess I’ve fallen a bit behind with the Outlook world! :) I really like the method of pasting attachments directly into the body of an email, and am glad this is possible in Windows. I’ll have to try it in Groupwise when I go back to work, which won’t be till the middle of August!

Thanks again Bill.

This surprises me. I didn’t know one could paste attachments right into the body of an email message. Is this something new? This is the way I’ve been doing attachments on my Mac for the past 6 years, but never knew it was possible in Windows and Outlook. Does this only work in outlook 2013?

Thanks,

Russell

Re: You need to update Skype. NOT!

Russell Solowoniuk

I had the same issue with not being able to close Skype after installing. I’m running Windows 8.1 as well, and wonder if we inadvertently installed the Windows App version of Skype instead of the full desktop version? I’m not to clear as to whether or not there are Windows Apps for all programs or not. Just a thought. I hardly use Skype, so not sure if it’s working or not… just installed the update because a window came up prompting me to update Skype, so I did.

Hi,
My goodness all of this excitement. I'm running the latest build of the program with JFW 16 and though some things have changed all is going just fine. I was able to explore various options, send a chat message to someone and even see where to initiate a call should I have wished to do so and all of that even without being sure I'm running the latest Skype scripts from Doug.
Deep cleansing breaths and reasonable thought processes are a good thing.
