I think the instructions Bill is referring to is that as you tab, the
keystrokes for accessing the various options from within the ribbon are
given. Personally, I can live without that. I've had a real struggle with
the ribbons ever since I started to use them, and I think it's because
virtual ribbons were checked. I wondered why NVDA seemed to handle the
ribbons more effectively than Jaws, and now I think I understand why that
was the case. In retrospect, use of the virtual ribbons caused me more
trouble than they were worth. Perhaps FS will improve on that feature, but
for now, I won't be using that feature.

Hi, Carolyn. You can either use the shortcuts, or you can use the arrow keys
plus the tab key to navigate the ribbon. You just lose some of the JAWS
instructions while navigating.

Hi, Les. The argument for not unchecking the Virtual Ribbon is this:
JAWS put in the "Virtual Ribbon" for those who wanted to manually
navigate the ribbons using the arrows and the Tab key. It is supposed
to make the menus more accessible, but I haven't found this to be true
in most instances.

Brad was saying that people may say to uncheck the Virtual Ribbon
without telling the person the down side of unchecking the Virtual
Ribbon. This may be true. However, some of the techs at FS tell you to
check the Virtual Ribbon, without telling you that this blocks the
function of some of the shortcuts.

Yes, but some people may want to stay with the virtual ribbon, which
is the FS attempt to make ribbon navigation easier for visually
impaired users.
Personally, I stayed with the regular ribbon, which is fine once you
get used to it. All I'm saying is that people considering unchecking
this option need to be aware of the consequences.

To check your settings for the Virtual Ribbon Menu in JAWS:

Press JAWS KEY plus F2. Arrow down to Settings Center and press Enter.
Press the letter M until it says Miscellaneous. Press Right Arrow to
Open Miscellaneous.

Arrow down to Virtual Ribbon Menu. It will probably tell you that
this setting is unavailable except in the default configuration of JAWS.

To load the default configuration: Press Shift plus Control plus the
letter D as in dog.

Once your default configuration is loaded, you can Press the Up and
Down Arrow to see if your Virtual Ribbon Menu is checked or not. You
want it to be unchecked if you want all of the keyboard shortcuts to
work
properly.
If
it is checked, press the Space Bar to uncheck it. Then Tab to OK and
press Enter to save these settings.

I hope this helps you.

The suggestion, alt-V, c, v, did not work for me. When I bring up

"blank".

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Installation of Windows 10

Hi Ted,

After contacting FS Support, I learned that the reason the syntax for
repairing of Jaws didn't work was because I ran the executeable file. In
fact, one has to run the installation file. So the syntax would be the Jaws
installer file followed by a space followed by /type followed by a space and
then the word repair. The instructions provided previously were correct,
but I used the Jaws16 executeable file rather than the installation file for
16. Hope this helps.

Hello! I hate to correct anyone on the list, but I have to say that just
because you are running Windows 8.1 does not mean you won't have to do a
JAWS repair. I installed Windows 10 last night, and upon turning on my
computer this morning, I got a message saying that the mirror display driver
was not working properly. I did indeed have to run a JAWS repair. I was
running the latest build of JAWS 16 as the FS instructions stated you had to
install first. Not sure why this happened. Those of you who are upgrading
from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 may encounter the same thing I did. Not to
worry, once you run the repair, all seems to work OK.

Re: submitting tickets to Zendesk sites

Brad Martin

Brent,

Using your link, I went to the page, and selected the link that just said
-
under the heading
Submit A Request
Choose a Topic

When I pressed Enter on the dash, JAWS kind of lost its place, but I found
that same heading, and all the topics were displayed. They did not say
"link" before announcing the topic, but I just ignored that and pressed
the spacebar on Change Feed URL. Up came the page asking for my Email
address, etc.

Again, this was with Firefox 39.0.3 and JAWS 15.

Hope that helps,
Brad

This issue they're having is with properly linking to a podcast feed so
iTunes opens. I just wanted to submit a ticket here
here
https://itunespodcasts.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new
to see if it is possible to make a link on a website that opens iTunes to
the reviews page of their podcast. I've emailed Apple's accessibility, but
this link isn't a site they control directly.
Right after it says choose a topic is a line of dashes which will probably
speak silent, depending on how punctuation is set. The virtual cursor off
way might let me submit it in the wrong category, but it probably goes in
other.
I've seen this setup on Uber's site also, but at least they let you email
support@uber.com, but Apple doesn't have a podcast support email address.

I have no idea if we're talking about the same thing or not. I just went
to
support.apple.com to see if I could find what your issue might be. Keep
in
mind I have no Apple products, so I couldn't go too far. I am using
Firefox
39.0.3 and JAWS 15. But I said I wanted to contact support, and I then
had
to choose Get Started. There were a list of buttons to choose from. I
chose
Mac, and that gave me subcategories. I chose Desktop. I selected each by
pressing the Spacebar on them. Then it gave me a whole new screen. I said
my question was about Mail, so I pressed spacebar on Mail. Then another
screen opened, and I really didn't know what I was trying to do since I
don't have a question, so I closed the window. Is that of any help? Try
spacebar to select an option if that's your problem. Sorry not to be more
helpful.

Brent,

I'm afraid I'm not going to be any help to you. After I sent my
previous
message, it occurred to me (derf dederf derf) that I could access what
I
needed at home as easily as at work. We do use a vendor that uses
Zendesk, but there are no dropdowns on their portal. There's an edit
field for Subject, and edit field for Description, and an edit field
for
the name of the organization for which we work. Then there's a browse
button in case we need to attach any files to the request, and then a
submit button. So apparently the vendor doesn't use any categories.
The
last time I used Zendesk with a different vendor, we did have
categories
to select, but it wasn't a problem in 2011-2012. But I no longer have
access to that instance of Zendesk. I suspect you're suffering from a
move to a mobile friendly platform for Zendesk, which often breaks
accessibility.

Sorry not to be of more help.

Brad

There's one more good reason to avoid FS's virtual ribbon. Using the MS
ribbon, we're using the same one that everyone in the world does. It means
we can share info with sighted people and take advantage of regular online
solutions when we encounter problems. I google solutions to Office problems
regularly, but the answers might do me little good if I'd resorted to the
virtual ribbon.

Do you run the repair with which we're all familiar, or the one recently discussed on this list? Oddly enough, it's coming up a lot now, but I never heard of the new command structure until early this summer.

Hello! I hate to correct anyone on the list, but I have to say that just because you are running Windows 8.1 does not mean you won't have to do a JAWS repair. I installed Windows 10 last night, and upon turning on my computer this morning, I got a message saying that the mirror display driver was not working properly. I did indeed have to run a JAWS repair. I was running the latest build of JAWS 16 as the FS instructions stated you had to install first. Not sure why this happened. Those of you who are upgrading from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 may encounter the same thing I did. Not to worry, once you run the repair, all seems to work OK.

If your upgrading from windows seven you'll have to do the repair so the mirror display driver can be removed. If your upgrading from windows 8.1 you won't need to do a repair at all because it and windows ten access things the same way.

Because the upgrade will change technical components and the way jaws interact with windows so you must repair jaws.
So josef, just too things. If I use the media creation tool, can I build an iso wich include a product key and where will I find the key if it being the case? And also, will I stil need sighted help or a talking desktop bootable when using that tool for install? If not, does that mean you build the complete install, or just the windows iso you need like it comes on the dvd?

Hi,
Yes - go to Settings (Windows+I)/Ease of Access/Other Options, then go to
Show Notifications For combo box. You can select between 5 seconds to 5
minutes (I may need to send a feedback regarding this control, as there is a
delay when changing them).

A toast notification is like a help balloon except it doesn't really
act
as
such. Once this appears, it'll go away after a few seconds, and you
can actually interact with it by pressing Windows+V while it is shown.
You can ignore them, and if you do, they'll live in Action Center
until you clear them all (pressing Windows+A will open Action Center).
Hope this helps.
Cheers,

Thanks for that. I'm not sure I see the usefulness in that. If I
wanted to have separate somethings, I'd just create a second user
account so I could have separate documents folders, downloads, etc.
Still not convinced I need this. I may buy a cheap refurb so I can
play with Windows 10 when I get bored, but as far as working my good
Windows 7 machine over as an experiment? "Ain't nobody got time for

Hi,

I've been following all this Windows 10 stuff with great interest,
and I just have a question (with a lot of background first):

So FS says you shouldn't use Edge, you should use Firefox or IE.
(I'm
doing
that now in Windows 7.) You can't use the built in mail program; you
should
use something like Thunderbird or Outlook. (I'm doing that now in
Windows
7.) And you should use Adobe Reader for PDF documents.
(I'm doing that now in Windows 7.) Reviews I've read all seem to
indicate that Cortana is iffy at best.

So why should I upgrade again? I'm not being smart; I'd really like
to
know
if I'm going to gain anything other than having a new operating
system
that
I have to use in the same old ways. The only benefit I can see is
that Windows 10 will be supported beyond January of 2020, where
Windows 7 will not. Am I overlooking some wonderful new feature that
should cause me to want to hurry and upgrade? Or does the old
saying, "If it ain't broke,
don't
fix it," apply here? I'd really honestly like to know if JAWS users
in particular are finding anything beneficial in the upgrade, or if
it's just something fun to do to your functioning computer to see if
it will still function.

P.S. Anybody on this list from Louisiana and thinking Cortana, as in
mall?

Kimsan,

The time and date a note was written is on the status line when the note is
open.

Or you can change the view of the Notes folder from the default Icon view to
Notes list view, and then the date and time appears alongside the note name
in the folder. There are a number of ways you can make this change; here are
two:
If you aren't using the virtual ribbon, press Alt, V, C, V, RightArrow,
Enter.
If you are using the virtual ribbon, it's Alt, V, RightArrow, Enter,
RightArrow, Enter

There's one more good reason to avoid FS's virtual ribbon. Using the MS
ribbon, we're using the same one that everyone in the world does. It means
we can share info with sighted people and take advantage of regular online
solutions when we encounter problems. I google solutions to Office problems
regularly, but the answers might do me little good if I'd resorted to the
virtual ribbon.

Initially you arrow and tab around until you find what you want, but as you
do Jaws is announcing the keystrokes for the particular items. Then when you
want to go there the next time you just press the keystroke.
You can press alt to go to the upper ribbon, arrow left or right to go to

press alt, V, C, V. Cheers Kevin.

Re: notes

Steve Griffiths

Kimsan,

The time and date a note was written is on the status line when the note is open.

Or you can change the view of the Notes folder from the default Icon view to Notes list view, and then the date and time appears alongside the note name in the folder. There are a number of ways you can make this change; here are two:
If you aren't using the virtual ribbon, press Alt, V, C, V, RightArrow, Enter.
If you are using the virtual ribbon, it's Alt, V, RightArrow, Enter, RightArrow, Enter

However, in 2013, in the legal note I wrote, I just wrote down the time and day, as in Sunday but not the date as in august 8th, 2015.
If anyone has 2010, could they muc up their view in the notes folder and see if it will work?

I'm having a brain freeze at the moment, but, when writing a note in outlook 2013, since I'm using outlook 2013, if I was dumb enough to not input when I wrote it is there a setting to have jaws echo that information?

Kevin:
Lol. I'm still working on thawing my brain out, I seriously thought under
the view menue, which I've toyed around with btw, it would produce the
result.

However, in 2013, in the legal note I wrote, I just wrote down the time and
day, as in Sunday but not the date as in august 8th, 2015.
If anyone has 2010, could they muc up their view in the notes folder and see
if it will work?

Hello Kimsan,
It is too bad your brain is frozen; it looks like your memory is the only
one with that info, lol.
Cheers Kevin.

Re: submitting tickets to Zendesk sites

Brent Harding

This issue they're having is with properly linking to a podcast feed so iTunes opens. I just wanted to submit a ticket here
here
https://itunespodcasts.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new
to see if it is possible to make a link on a website that opens iTunes to the reviews page of their podcast. I've emailed Apple's accessibility, but this link isn't a site they control directly.
Right after it says choose a topic is a line of dashes which will probably speak silent, depending on how punctuation is set. The virtual cursor off way might let me submit it in the wrong category, but it probably goes in other.
I've seen this setup on Uber's site also, but at least they let you email support@uber.com, but Apple doesn't have a podcast support email address.

I have no idea if we're talking about the same thing or not. I just went to support.apple.com to see if I could find what your issue might be. Keep in mind I have no Apple products, so I couldn't go too far. I am using Firefox 39.0.3 and JAWS 15. But I said I wanted to contact support, and I then had to choose Get Started. There were a list of buttons to choose from. I chose Mac, and that gave me subcategories. I chose Desktop. I selected each by pressing the Spacebar on them. Then it gave me a whole new screen. I said my question was about Mail, so I pressed spacebar on Mail. Then another screen opened, and I really didn't know what I was trying to do since I don't have a question, so I closed the window. Is that of any help? Try spacebar to select an option if that's your problem. Sorry not to be more helpful.

Uber and Apple are two instances with categories. It isn't even accessible on iOS either, but I bet if I didn't have broken arrow keys that are remapped to unused keys in Windows, Safari probably works perfectly with it on OSX. I could be wrong about that though.

Brent,

I'm afraid I'm not going to be any help to you. After I sent my previous message, it occurred to me (derf dederf derf) that I could access what I needed at home as easily as at work. We do use a vendor that uses Zendesk, but there are no dropdowns on their portal. There's an edit field for Subject, and edit field for Description, and an edit field for the name of the organization for which we work. Then there's a browse button in case we need to attach any files to the request, and then a submit button. So apparently the vendor doesn't use any categories. The last time I used Zendesk with a different vendor, we did have categories to select, but it wasn't a problem in 2011-2012. But I no longer have access to that instance of Zendesk. I suspect you're suffering from a move to a mobile friendly platform for Zendesk, which often breaks accessibility.

Sorry not to be of more help.

Brad

They don't identify as any link or combo box for me to use them, and turning virtual cursor off lands me on the wrong category most of the time. Apple and Uber are just two examples of sites that use this. How can I get my ticket submitted?
