Re: What do I gain with Windows 10 as a blind person?

Dave,

When JAWS arbitrarily shuts up, I think you use the JAWS key+Windows key+F4 solution, right? If it's failed to bring back JAWS for me, it's been maybe only once or twice in many months. However, I need to use it at least twice a day.

Jim,

Pretty much hit-or-miss. It would depend on the Operating System + Video
Device Driver + JAWS Version + Program Version + Unknown Gremlins.

Very hard to duplicate symptoms with so many variables. I do know that JAWS
16 tendency to close and reopen without any warning is a bit of a thorn in
my side. There are times when it won't come back at all, and I'm sitting
there with my hands poised, waiting for nothing.

Dave:

Very enlightening! For some reason, I never got around to, nor frankly
considered, uninstalling previous versions of JAWS, and this may have proven
to be "far-sighted" after all. I think that I may adopt your 3 most-recent
version strategy myself. However, once someone moves to Windows 10,
previous JAWS versions will not work - from what I gather.

However, it may be a while before I upgrade to Windows 10. So, for now, are
there some applications that typically misbehave with the latest JAWS
offering? Or, as with many things, it is pretty much a hit or miss
situation?

Thanks.

Jim,

As to previous versions -- simply because the current install is running
fine, it does not mean that it will run so with all applications. I
occasionally run JAWS 15 when JAWS 16 is misbehaving in a particular
program. I delete versions older than 3 major revisions back, just to keep
things simpler. And I still have all the executables for last revisions of
all major versions going back to 3.5. Of course that's just my
anal-retentive nature at work, having sufficient hard disk space to justify
that level of insanity.

Don't mean to be "smart"; but, why would you want to use previous versions
of JAWS if you have the latest version running successfully. I'm sure that
there is a really good reason for it! :) :)

Windows 10 won't be free after a year. I believe the 2020 date refers
to the
end up MS support. But for now, as Brad says, who has the time? I'm
waiting
for the first service pack (MS always comes out with one) and FS's first
rounds of fixes, all of which I expect will appear within the year.

Hi,

I've been following all this Windows 10 stuff with great interest, and
I just have a question (with a lot of background first):

So FS says you shouldn't use Edge, you should use Firefox or IE. (I'm
doing that now in Windows 7.) You can't use the built in mail program;
you should use something like Thunderbird or Outlook. (I'm doing that
now in Windows 7.) And you should use Adobe Reader for PDF documents.
(I'm doing that now in Windows 7.) Reviews I've read all seem to
indicate that Cortana is iffy at best.

So why should I upgrade again? I'm not being smart; I'd really like to
know if I'm going to gain anything other than having a new operating
system that I have to use in the same old ways. The only benefit I can
see is that Windows 10 will be supported beyond January of 2020, where
Windows
7 will not. Am I overlooking some wonderful new feature that should
cause me to want to hurry and upgrade? Or does the old saying, "If it
ain't broke, don't fix it," apply here? I'd really honestly like to
know if JAWS users in particular are finding anything beneficial in
the upgrade, or if it's just something fun to do to your functioning
computer to see if it will still function.

P.S. Anybody on this list from Louisiana and thinking Cortana, as in
mall?

Re: Best email client with Jaws

When you went to Live Mail, what did you do about your Contacts?

Is it easy to make distribution lists in Windows Live Mail. I have several
that I need to make. Today, I needed to send out word of a death to one of
my groups, but do not have the lists now and not the time to go through some
130 contacts for 30.

What do you like about Windows Live Mail? Does it have a calendar?

Can you tab around in it, or do you have to give Keyboard commands?

figure out in Ms word 2010. When I open a document, doesn't matter if it's a
new one or one I'm opening from before, I cannot edit it. When I try to type
or do anything jaws will say things like this key is not available in ms
word or there are no graphics in this document. I found if I hit f-10 to go
into the menus and then exit out again it fixes the problem temporarily.
Once I alt tab out of the document and back in I have to do this again. No
clue what setting I changed. Any help is greatly appreciated. thanks

When you hit Control Y, of course, you get the option to switch to other
portions of Outlook, but it also announces how message you have unread.
Admittedly, unlike good old Outlook Express it doesn't give a total, then
give the unread messages. I do like the calendar though.

I had one problem. I was told that to block a sender to send the e-mail to
Junk, which worked for a couple, but not on the last one I attempted to
send. I ended up permanently deleting it, but I wanted to block it.

Another thing I am wanting to do, which is not specific to Outlook, but does
apply to it is to know how to add words to my dictionary, since Control A is
not doing that; also I want to know what commands to give Spell Check to
make the change I want.

Using your link, I went to the page, and selected the link that just said
-
under the heading
Submit A Request
Choose a Topic

When I pressed Enter on the dash, JAWS kind of lost its place, but I found
that same heading, and all the topics were displayed. They did not say
"link" before announcing the topic, but I just ignored that and pressed
the spacebar on Change Feed URL. Up came the page asking for my Email
address, etc.

Again, this was with Firefox 39.0.3 and JAWS 15.

Hope that helps,
Brad

This issue they're having is with properly linking to a podcast feed so
iTunes opens. I just wanted to submit a ticket here
here
https://itunespodcasts.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new
to see if it is possible to make a link on a website that opens iTunes to
the reviews page of their podcast. I've emailed Apple's accessibility, but
this link isn't a site they control directly.
Right after it says choose a topic is a line of dashes which will probably
speak silent, depending on how punctuation is set. The virtual cursor off
way might let me submit it in the wrong category, but it probably goes in
other.
I've seen this setup on Uber's site also, but at least they let you email
support@uber.com, but Apple doesn't have a podcast support email address.

I have no idea if we're talking about the same thing or not. I just went
to
support.apple.com to see if I could find what your issue might be. Keep
in
mind I have no Apple products, so I couldn't go too far. I am using
Firefox
39.0.3 and JAWS 15. But I said I wanted to contact support, and I then
had
to choose Get Started. There were a list of buttons to choose from. I
chose
Mac, and that gave me subcategories. I chose Desktop. I selected each by
pressing the Spacebar on them. Then it gave me a whole new screen. I said
my question was about Mail, so I pressed spacebar on Mail. Then another
screen opened, and I really didn't know what I was trying to do since I
don't have a question, so I closed the window. Is that of any help? Try
spacebar to select an option if that's your problem. Sorry not to be more
helpful.

Brent,

I'm afraid I'm not going to be any help to you. After I sent my
previous
message, it occurred to me (derf dederf derf) that I could access what
I
needed at home as easily as at work. We do use a vendor that uses
Zendesk, but there are no dropdowns on their portal. There's an edit
field for Subject, and edit field for Description, and an edit field
for
the name of the organization for which we work. Then there's a browse
button in case we need to attach any files to the request, and then a
submit button. So apparently the vendor doesn't use any categories.
The
last time I used Zendesk with a different vendor, we did have
categories
to select, but it wasn't a problem in 2011-2012. But I no longer have
access to that instance of Zendesk. I suspect you're suffering from a
move to a mobile friendly platform for Zendesk, which often breaks
accessibility.

Sorry not to be of more help.

Apple and Uber are just two examples of sites that use this. How can

Sounds like you may have inadvertently enabled navigation keys. Navigation
keys in Word is a feature similar to the virtual cursor in HTML
environments. In fact, the keystroke to turn this feature on and off is the
same as the command to toggle the virtual cursor: JAWS key plus z. See if
that works.

Dear list,

I am using the latest build of jaws 16 and am having a problem that I cannot
figure out in Ms word 2010.
Any help is greatly appreciated. thanks

Carolyn Arnold <4carolyna@...>

Hi Richard,

When I bought my Lenovo Yoga Pro 2 last November I had the tech guys at the place I bought it, Future Shop, go into the BIOS and change the function key settings so that they revert to standard function key operation. I can’t quite recall exactly what this setting in the BIOS is called. Someone else already mentioned this, but I thought I’d suggest getting someone in the store where you purchase your laptop to do this for you.

Cheers,

There's one more good reason to avoid FS's virtual ribbon. Using the MS
ribbon, we're using the same one that everyone in the world does. It means
we can share info with sighted people and take advantage of regular online
solutions when we encounter problems. I google solutions to Office problems

I think the instructions Bill is referring to is that as you tab, the
keystrokes for accessing the various options from within the ribbon are
given. Personally, I can live without that. I've had a real struggle with
the ribbons ever since I started to use them, and I think it's because
virtual ribbons were checked. I wondered why NVDA seemed to handle the
ribbons more effectively than Jaws, and now I think I understand why that
was the case. In retrospect, use of the virtual ribbons caused me more
trouble than they were worth. Perhaps FS will improve on that feature, but
for now, I won't be using that feature.

Hi, Les. The argument for not unchecking the Virtual Ribbon is this:
JAWS put in the "Virtual Ribbon" for those who wanted to manually
navigate the ribbons using the arrows and the Tab key. It is supposed
to make the menus more accessible, but I haven't found this to be true
in most instances.

Brad was saying that people may say to uncheck the Virtual Ribbon
without telling the person the down side of unchecking the Virtual
Ribbon. This may be true. However, some of the techs at FS tell you to
check the Virtual Ribbon, without telling you that this blocks the
function of some of the shortcuts.

is the FS attempt to make ribbon navigation easier for visually

To check your settings for the Virtual Ribbon Menu in JAWS:

Press JAWS KEY plus F2. Arrow down to Settings Center and press Enter.
Press the letter M until it says Miscellaneous. Press Right Arrow to
Open Miscellaneous.

Arrow down to Virtual Ribbon Menu. It will probably tell you that
this setting is unavailable except in the default configuration of JAWS.

To load the default configuration: Press Shift plus Control plus the
letter D as in dog.

Once your default configuration is loaded, you can Press the Up and
Down Arrow to see if your Virtual Ribbon Menu is checked or not. You
want it to be unchecked if you want all of the keyboard shortcuts to
work
properly.
If
it is checked, press the Space Bar to uncheck it. Then Tab to OK and
press Enter to save these settings.

I hope this helps you.

Subject: changing the "view" in outlook 2010

Hi List friends,

Regarding the info on losing messages in outlook, and the
suggestion to change the view menu, I need to know how to do this.
The suggestion, alt-V, c, v, did not work for me. When I bring up
the ribbons menu and enter on the "view" menu, nothing happens. It
just says "blank". I also tried arrowing and tabbing and still says
"blank".

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Dave:

You have more patience than I. If JAWS does not return within a minute or
so, I do a (you should excuse the expression) blind shutdown of JAWS, go to
the DESKTOP, where I have already placed the focus, and reopened JAWS. Mind
you, if a good pair of eyes is ready/willing/able, not to mention actually
present, I am not shy about asking for help in case something is going on -
un related to JAWS.

However, when no "eyes" are around, it feels like the world has been shut
off; so, I know what you mean by waiting for nothing. I usually try to find
something else to do.

I believe the 2020 date refers
to the end up MS support. But for now, as Brad says, who has the
time? I'm waiting for the first service pack (MS always comes out
with one) and FS's first rounds of fixes, all of which I expect will
appear within the year.

Hi,

I've been following all this Windows 10 stuff with great interest,
and I just have a question (with a lot of background first):

So FS says you shouldn't use Edge, you should use Firefox or IE.
(I'm doing that now in Windows 7.) You can't use the built in mail
program; you should use something like Thunderbird or Outlook. (I'm
doing that now in Windows 7.) And you should use Adobe Reader for PDF
documents.
(I'm doing that now in Windows 7.) Reviews I've read all seem to
indicate that Cortana is iffy at best.

So why should I upgrade again? I'm not being smart; I'd really like
to know if I'm going to gain anything other than having a new
operating system that I have to use in the same old ways. The only
benefit I can see is that Windows 10 will be supported beyond
January of 2020, where Windows
7 will not. Am I overlooking some wonderful new feature that should
cause me to want to hurry and upgrade? Or does the old saying, "If
it ain't broke, don't fix it," apply here? I'd really honestly like
to know if JAWS users in particular are finding anything beneficial
in the upgrade, or if it's just something fun to do to your
functioning computer to see if it will still function.

P.S. Anybody on this list from Louisiana and thinking Cortana, as in
mall?

Cheers,

weird editing problem in word 2010

Drew Hunthausen

Dear list,

I am using the latest build of jaws 16 and am having a problem that I cannot
figure out in Ms word 2010.
Any help is greatly appreciated. thanks
