Does anyone visit or read stuff from cnn.com?
It seems as this site is notorious for videos. How come videos are not playing when I click on them, but they are on other news sites. Someone try this video from cnn.com and please report if a video plays. It says click here to watch this video; however, when I do that, nothing happens. http://www.cnn.com/videos/entertainment/2015/05/16/pkg-orig-norm-macdonald-b reaks-down-letterman.cnn# -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Some of them, if you have low vision you can't tell what's what. They're just little gray patches. All kinds of issues with the player. So, we created an accessible player using HTML5 technology so that it would work with a lot of platforms, works with lots of browsers and cross-platform whether you are using a Mac or a PC, whether you're using a mobile device. And, it has this great change colors so if your website has a color scheme, a high contrast color scheme or various high contrast color schemes, the player will change with your website. So, users with low vision can make the controls more visible and users who use screen readers can find the controls easily. We added keyboard shortcuts so in the middle of the video if you want to pause it, you can just hit the key command. It varies slightly from browser to browser to pause the video. You can make it full-screen or make it small on the page. the user has that option. So, we really think we put in a lot of nice features to make playing videos easy, fun, and took all the hassle away from the user. And, a lot of hassle away from the web designer, too. You don't have to build your own player. Now, your job is to make accessible content and put it in the player. Voice Over: What are the current and future plans for the AFB Accessible Player? So, of course we're using it on our site. We started rolling it out on new videos. So, anytime we are putting up something new we use the new player. But also, we are making available for download. You can get it from AFB.org. Actually, if you go to afb.org/player, there's a page that describes it, you can get instructions, and download the player to put on your website. _______________________________________________ Jfw mailing list Jfw@lists.the-jdh.com http://lists.the-jdh.com/mailman/listinfo/jfw_lists.the-jdh.com

Re: thoughts on latest jaws update
Melissa Stott
So far, I have had no issues with the latest update. I am using windows 7. When Jaws 16 was first released, it would freeze up on me, but it hasn't done that in a while. The only problem I can see right now, is that the MLB scores in research it is still broken.

Upon rebooting the PC I found Jaws in 40 minute mode. I have a copy of the authorisation code and I was just about to enter the code when i realised the code was already there with the last 3 digits as stars. I entered them anyway, and all was well, however The Jaws icon now shows as"Jaws Home use". Oh well That solved the mystery, at least I didn't have to use up my last authorisation key! My husband has 8.1, which, as I understand, is very good. But I remember when Windows 8 came out, people were in a bit of an uproar about it. As for me, I am crippling along with XP until JAWS 17 comes out. When that happens, I want to gather all the information I can about what works best with it, for instance a scanner for my printer, and I intend to get Windows 10. So if anyone has advice about a scanner, I really need to know, since I am completely ignorant about scanners. I thought about getting 8.1, but a couple of people advised me that since this is so close, there was no point in learning two different systems - just wait and learn one. So right now, that is my plan. I know that I'll need everything for 64 bits then, and I don't know if some of the records I have will transfer, but, as Rick says, "Tomorrow is another day, another way..." While this suggests that the update is minor, the timing of its release is quite thought-provoking, as it hasn't been too long since the previous update came out. Besides, why would FS release an update that addresses only one issue? Also, I only had the problem in FireFox. . No problem with Jaws and this page with internet Explorer. I just installed 2 optional Windows 7 updates. One concerns information from one window showing up in another Window. Does that sound like it might effect Jaws? The other was my video driver. Both updates could effect Jaws so I tried this page again and got the same results. Step 1: Go to the following page with FireFox. http://rsload.net/soft/document/15226-jarte.html 2: Do a Jaws search for the word bug. 3: Repeat the search after the first occurrence of the word is found. 4: Jaws stops responding after 2 or 3 searches for the next instance with jawskey+f3. Jaws speech history follows: JAWS Find dialog Find what: edit combo bug Alt+w Bug Fixes: clickable A bug in the WordPad word processing engine for Windows 7 and below could cause bad behavior in documents where a hyperlink appeared at the very beginning clickable Bug Fixes: clickable Jaws gets stuck at this point or at the next instance . 5: Sometimes Jaws does not automatically recover. 6: Sometimes Jaws won't restart with jawskey+windows+f4. 7: One time, Jaws was removed from the tab order of running applications. I could tell by loading another screen reader. 8: Jaws would not start again in one session after unloading NVDA, (the other screen reader). JAWS Version 16.0.2342, Windows 7 pro 64, FireFox 37.0.2 update 38.0.1 just now. BTW: Jaws still does not read the read only edit boxes in the Firefox about dialog, even after I made the mods to the settings file suggested by other listers. Lots of other Mozilla dialogs are not read properly with Jaws. All these updates and no change. Bob On 5/14/2015 2:37 PM, Robert Logue wrote: Go to this page and do a jaws search for bug. I ask this because I may have a situation where some of my clients have to use an application like this. Oracle data base, but with an HTML front end overlay. I'm thinking that this should work with JAWS, provided the developers code it correctly. I'm concerned that we may have to do some scripting to make some of the elements work though. This quiry relates to the recent thread on reading web addresses, but I think my issue is different than what has been encountered thus far. Basically, my problem is this: When I am on a particular web site, I can initially access the URL web address using either alt D or f6, but as soon as I start working with my arrow keys to make sure I have focus on the address, or to actually copy the address onto my clipboard, the address literally disappears. At first, I thought this was a Jaws issue, in that the address is still on the screen and simply is not being recognized by Jaws. However, I had my sighted wife check, and she said that the address disappears from the screen as well whenever I start working with my arrow keys. I can gget a listing of other web addresses on the screen, but the one I originally wanted seems to be gone. Has anyone encountered this issue, and if so, how did you work around it? Yes, that would be great if you could understand what the voice was saying. To me, all I need is to hear, “Comment” and then I know that the text being read is a comment. When the voice changes to Rocko, it speeds up and I cannot understand what it says.

Re: How can I find Add/Remove Programs in the Windows 7 Control Panel?
Adrian Spratt
It was a reasonable question. With XP, users had to go to the control panel for add/remove. Setting aside Vista, which I spared myself, Win7's search field enables users to get inside areas without going through an entire hierarchy. Add/remove is a perfect example. From a recent thread, HJ Pad is another, since it's a tiny application inside JAWS. In this way, Win7's search field is a boon.

Please don't feel embarrassed! I'm sure some of the questions I've been asking on here lately have been at least as elementary! I simply get to add/remove programs by typing add/remove programs into the windows 7 search box and hitting enter. Like you, I've also never been able to find it in the control panel itself. Re: How can I find Add/Remove Programs in the Windows 7 Control Panel?
Brad Martin
Technically, Add/Remove Programs is now called Programs & Features. This change first occurred in the incredibly annoying Windows Vista, which is when my friends and I started referring to it as Glitches and Bugs.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
Keep in mind that when you open Programs & Features, there's a bit of a delay while the list is populating, especially on an older or slower computer. So sometimes allowing a few seconds before trying to arrow through the list is advisable. Having said that, searching for Add or Remove Programs will yield the same Programs & Features Control Panel. Just know that it's not called that any more. Brad

Re: Problem highlighting and copying web addresses
Brad Martin
Tom,
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
This behavior actually makes sense if you understand what's visually happening. Let me help. 1. When you press control L, Alt D, or F6, your cursor moves to the address bar, and the address is highlighted. So pressing Control C will copy that which is highlighted, in this case the address in question. 2. If you press the up or down arrow, you instead trigger a listing of recently visited addresses to start appearing, and at that point, you're selecting different addresses from your past history to replace the current address. That's why your current address disappears and is replaced by one of the others. So when you thought you were double checking things, you were actually asking to change the current address to another recently visited website from your recent past history. Does that clarify things? Brad

Ok, Adrian.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
This must be my mistake then, because as soon as I started using my arrow keys to double-check things, the URL address went away. It doesn't seem to me like this should happen, but at least now I know how to work around the issue. Thanks very much. Dr. Tom Behler

To copy it, the very next command after alt-d must be control-c. Think of it this way. Alt-d brings the address into focus, so it's sitting there ready to be copied. -----Original Message----- From: Jfw [mailto:jfw-bounces@lists.the-jdh.com] On Behalf Of Tom Behler via Jfw Sent: Sunday, May 17, 2015 12:24 PM To: 'The Jaws for Windows support list.' This quiry relates to the recent thread on reading web addresses, but I think my issue is different than what has been encountered thus far.
